General Discussion / You ARE invited! Monday April 21
« on: April 19, 2014, 12:13:28 pm »
Mangus Crunch //OOC// Cordially invites you to join him on his "start" date. I will be delivering him to your welcoming or unwelcoming, claws or hands or even mechanical bits, to plot against or make friends with, as you see fit, on Monday April 21.  I have the whole day off so I plan to run him for the entirety of the time more or less so I should be at your mercy for all the time zones. (are you hearing this Australia?!) so if you're feeling the need to corrupt someone, kick someone around, act as a tour guide, be helpful to someone, or just go smash some skulls (hopefully there will be plenty of that!) com'on down to Brutus Clawfoot's "Here's Mangus Crunch emporium"  and get your self one very fine piece  of Dealer Certified RP and show Young Mangus Crunch a good 'what for' !  (in lawyer speak) offer limited to participating members. Supplies are limited. Offer only good while supplies last. Skull smashing can only be had when the smashing of skulls is occurring. Young Mangus Crunch is not a trademark of anything really. RP is good, and you should get some. Void where RL plays a hand! I hope to see any or  all of you there! Cheers! LOL! Oh and for what it's worth you may notice Mangus on Sunday as well but on that day I'm really only planning to get him sorted out and organized so he will be ready for Monday. (forgive me if he isn't very social on Sunday) Enjoy!

Here it goes! Character Name: Deverain Current Level: 20 Original Biography: http://layonara.com/threads/1284355-new-character-submission-deverian           (Note: When I created the character, I swapped the ‘I’ and the ‘A’ in his name, so the approved name is Deverian, but in game he is                Deverain.)          Alignment Shift Submission: http://layonara.com/threads/1285900-deverain-alignment-shift-request         CDT's - http://layonara.com/threads/1284395-deverian                          http://layonara.com/threads/10162199-deverains-new-book                                Lifetime Achievements: Unfortunately, school makes my play hours fall in a strange slot where I always have to log in the middle of quests, so Deverain has been unable to get involved in any long-running quests. I realize this may be a roadblock to my World Leader Development Quest Application, but I’m hoping it can be worked around seeing as how it is real life’s fault not the character’s fault.           How I see Deverain becoming a World Leader: Definitely some sort of combat/military quest, but with role play roots. I’m not talking about some purely hack-n-bash quest, but if Deverain is going to become a World Leader, I think it is going to be on the grounds of slaying a dragon or something (Excuse my use of the stereotypical knight-in-shining-armor great deed, but that’s along the lines of what I see Dev doing). Of course, it needs a good chunk of role play and/or political tie-ins. But in general, I see Deverain doing something good and pro-Toran such as protecting a village or slaying an evil beast.           What sort of title do I envision for Deverain: I don’t think Dev is really the type for any official titles (Seeing as he’s Chaotic Good in a Lawful Good church). If he did get one it as a side effect of whatever he ends up doing, it would be a benefit, but I don’t think it would be something I’d be intentionally shooting for. I saw him maybe moving up in the church to some sort of place of respect, but definitely nothing official. I figure that if a warrior becomes a world leader, he stays a warrior!           Thanks for the consideration, and I understand if Deverain hasn’t been on enough quests to qualify. If that is the roadblock to this application, I understand and I can try to get involved in more quests  -Teo

Rumour Has It / A visit to the Toranite Temple

Deverain visits the temple in Fort Last with questions about undead sightings near the Silkwood forest, about nightmares of being undead, and about a spell that gave someone the appearance of being a zombie without taking away their mental abilities.

Just for Fun / What do you groove to?
« on: April 13, 2014, 10:46:29 am »
I'm wondering what you guys tend to have "on" in the background while your gamming here? Yeah. I realise, that is kind of a dorky question, but I am curious. I'm guessing some of you are probly into some truely interesting music. For me, It's usually DVR'd Charly Rose. For instance ATM I have the semi recent program where he is interviewing "Russy Riot" going on in the background as I write this. When the program ends my reciever will default to CNN (Zzzzzzzzz.... Boring! Right?!)But musicly, Nothing does Layo justice for me like Rush's newest album; Clockwork Angels! YEAH! The whole album almost seem's to be about one aspect of Layo or another.Whats your thing?

General Discussion / Absent for a while
« on: April 08, 2014, 08:32:20 pm »
Hey all, just wanted to keep anyone who is wondering up to date.  So my hard drive failed and I've been unable to play for the last couple of weeks. It really isn't a great time for that to happen cause I'm also really busy with:1)  Retiring from the Navy2)  Moving to Valdosta, GAI probably won't resolve the computer issue until after I get to Georgia, so I won't be playing for a little while.  Anyway if you are looking for Gunder, Vladimir, Grogmegor, or Arvan, just send me a PM and I'll answer as soon as I can.Dorax (aka Anthony)

Rumour Has It / All in the Name of Love
« on: June 25, 2014, 05:35:37 pm »
Bling Bling, the ugly orc sister of Moreg, a gate guard at Fort Vehl, was pining away. Moreg looked disgusted and yelled at her, “Why you sad?! You thinking about wild little halfling?! You crush him with you love. He too small.”She yelled back and pouted, “He say me Pretty!”Moreg rolled his eyes and slapped his large forehead with the palm of his hand. “Forget him. He nothing but little flea.”Big tears developed in her eyes. “No, he say me pretty! He say he come back and talk on conquest and battle. He bring trophy!”Moreg laughed, “You never see him again... He not come back to you. If he do, he probably bring twiggy man and you break in half.” When he slammed the door and left she started crying again.

Rumour Has It / Missing adventurers
« on: February 24, 2014, 03:11:02 pm »
Talk in the Silver Buckle is heard that a ranger offers to reveal the location of one of his stashes to those who can find out what happened to a group of adventurers that went missing in the Wolfswood. He has found out that they had caches made to supply them in case of an emergency and suggests to check them out - where there's something missing or signs that the cache has been tempered with, there is also a good place to start the search. He has hints leading to the caches for those who wish to investigate and help him find the missing adventurers, but also a warning: that walking around in the Wolfswood isn't exactly a walk in the park, not only because there are giants and such monsters, but also because the Border of Sun is nearby and non-humans should best not let themselves be caught beyond that invisible line.//Hints to be found in the display case near the entry. Geared towards low-levels.

This thread is for documentation purposes for Raz's Ship, The Ravenwind.  It will include statistics, special weapons, enchantments etc. when they become available and as needed.  This thread is also to document the ships current ports and patrol routes for RP, Quest and GM purposes.  In addition this is to record ship's crew, personal, any special passengers.  Lastly this thread is to record any damages, repairs, costs and expenses.

The Ravenwind

Large ship constructed from yew wood.  Plated and some reinforcement with Mithral.  Golden sails, sails and rigging constructed from (that demon spider) silk.  Light weight and durable for size.

Armaments: Moderately armed.  Main weapon: Argali Trueaxe designed ballista made from mithral/demon spider silk on a pivoting mount on he fore-deck.  Ballista head forged from adamant and mithril depending on use with explosive heads.

Captain: Razeriem

First Mate: to be determined

Ship's Mage: Zarianna

Officers: to be determined

Crew: to be specified

Home Port: Hurm (current)

Allies: to be determined likely, Hurm and Red Bear, possibly Llilwich.

Enemies: to be determined, pirates/slavers

Purpose: Patrolling waters, hunting pirates/slavers/anything resembling a Kuhl Warship.

Projects:: Build crew unity, drill and practice, cross-train (even if its basic function), familiarization with ship and abilities and use of magic in combat (Raz acting as ship's mage for time being in addition to Captain.)

Tactics:  Magic familiarization focused on damage spells (evocations), defensive screens (gust of wind, shield, stoneskin), enchantments (ship weapons if possible-archers secondary), speed, unexpected nimbleness, working from positions not in favor of the wind to give false expectation to enemy ships and overcoming with magic (gust of wind.)  Use unexpected speed and agility, magic and specialized ballista with unexpected punch.

Primary area of patrol.  Area patrolled until indicated otherwise.

Sea of Fury, with refueling port being Sedera (hopefully-Raz was in the naval battle to defend them, figure they should allow him to spend money to port and refuel.)  Current purpose: take any pirate/slaver vessels possible.  Capture or sink anything resembling a Kuhl Warship-if they have any.  Gather intelligence on movements through the Sea of Fury and from to the Kingdom of Kuhl.  Sneak occasional peeks at the Kuhl ports and coastlines.

Rumour Has It / Nature's travelling shop
« on: December 22, 2013, 03:35:33 pm »
Heard around Center.Foresta Fiveoaks, druid and shifter, reclusive, reticent, rude even, has taken off overseas. To a grove deep within some faraway forest. There they say she has promised to open her travelling shop for business. She is said to have collected a small ethically gathered collection of goods for sale to those closely aligned to nature who might best describe her present surrounds. She is to be found under a maple tree, where she says she can hear others whispering among the trees. Ozy, Brisbane even...druidic babbling no doubt but thats what people say.//10pm gmt will be at this location offering trade for like minded individuals , those with a knowledge of the surrounds are particularly welcome.

I don't know what time that will be exactly, but I'll announce it when it happens. This will last until sometime Sunday, Dec. 15th during the night sometime. Also, as a bit more of a notice, we'll be starting another bonus event next Friday (Dec. 20th), which will last until after the New Year.  I'll mention this again, at least by the time I actually turn up the bonuses.

Layonara Server / Urgent information about Layonara on NWN
« on: December 03, 2013, 10:08:24 pm »

Dear Layonara Community,

Over the years, NWN-based Layonara has undergone several evolutions and benefited from various sorts of contributions from our community. Among these in particular are the financial considerations of hosting this game world and the way in which they have impacted the make-up of the game world. One rather profound transformation lies in the collection of servers we have running the world. When I started, we had seven physical servers: four running individual modules, one running the database, one running the forums and one spare that eventually became used as the quest server. At the time we also had a pretty sweet deal for hosting them at a pretty major data center. That situation changed, however, and hosting costs shot through the roof and to a point where it was unrealistic for us to continue on with that configuration, so we had to make changes. Fast-forward to today, we have only two servers: one running the actual game across two modules and one for the forums.

Over the years we have asked for and welcomed donations to help with the server costs. We cannot require people to pay to play here, as it would violate the terms of the EULA for NWN. We also cannot offer in-game incentives and other game-related monetizations for the same reasons. For the most part, this has been acceptable for us, because running Layonara on NWN has never been about making money.

We have, unfortunately, hit something of a crucial financial point that requires attention. The two servers we have cost us an average of $268 CAD each month (NOTE: this is about the same in USD given current exchange rates). To break that down a little, the game server costs about $118/month and the forums server costs about $150/month. This cost is presently split by three of us, and but there has been a change for one who can no longer continue to contribute his share as he has been. This was hinted about in a recent devlog entry. In essence, we are in a situation where we either need to start bringing in regular donations from the community to make up for our shortfall or make some hard choices about the fate of Layonara on NWN. So in this context, we essentially have one question for this community:

Do you want to see NWN Layonara continue?

Our web site will remain; that is a cost we can and will continue to shoulder. Layonara as a whole is not going anywhere, and in fact, we have more than a few plans being set into motion. Whether or not the NWN game server will continue, however, will depend on the community's interest and the community's ability to donate regularly and sufficiently to keep the servers running. To be clear, we are not asking for a lot from individuals. If each member of our active player base could chip in even $5 or $10 USD each month, it would make a significant difference and allow us to continue on with relative ease.

Starting very soon, we're going to start holding some regular donation drives, though we would also welcome anyone who wants to regularly donate to the server fund. Clearly, we would welcome and encourage both. Any overages would, of course, be applied to future fees.

Ideally, community contributions and donations would fully fund the NWN server (approx. $118/month). If we could even get $100/month from community donations, it would eliminate the short-fall that will occur. This sounds like a lot for a single person, but when divided several ways, it's really not that much.

To potentially help with your decision, before this financial news came to light, we have been working on several initiatives for the game world. The Fortune system is the first of them, but also we have GMs planning some new efforts and collaborations. Leanthar and EdTheKet are working on putting together some new and (hopefully) exciting things. We have several things in motion right now, but if there is insufficient interest in the community for such things...or if there is just an insufficient ability or desire for you all as a group to contribute a small amount each month to keep the servers running...then there is little justification to continue on with NWN.

At the risk of sounding gloomy or dramatic, the sad truth is that the NWN server's fate will likely be decided by the end of the year if we do not gain enough in the way of donations before then. There's really no way to sugar-coat this, so I won't try. It's no longer a request; we cannot continue to support both servers without the assistance of the community.

So the choice is truly in your hands. We wish we didn't have to reduce this down to a matter of money, but unfortunately wishes won't keep the lights on, as the saying goes.

As this has all come to light somewhat recently, we do not yet have a resource set up to handle donations (please do not use the old links; these may be changing), but we anticipate having something very soon. We're just trying to figure out which of several possibilities will work out the best in terms of fees and overhead. For now, feel free to discuss and ask questions about this. We'll answer what we can.

-- Dorganath (on behalf of the entire Layonara team)
