Rumour Has It / Grief of Love
« on: March 18, 2012, 09:27:58 am »
After hearing news of the death of her partner, Zarianna travels to the Breath of the Muse.  When she sees SehKy, she punches him square in the face.  Hard.  She then goes to see Gel'larian's body, sending all others away, sequestering herself with him for days until one of the Priestesses of Ilsare finally convince her to let them send him to his final rest.

General Discussion / Sheep in the Sky (Appstore) - Helps out Layonara
« on: February 23, 2012, 09:02:35 am »
Hey Everyone :) *waves*

My brother and I just released a cool game to the appstore for iphone, ipad and ipod, called "Sheep in the Sky".

If you have an Apple device you can help out Layonara at the same time as getting a neat little game.

I have talked to Dan and I will donate part of the income towards the server upgrade Orth described.

Not only will the 99c you pay for the game be split with Layonara; getting the game and adding a rating will push it in the appstore ranking up, therefore making it visible to other people all over the world, who in turn might buy it, which means their 99c will be split with Layonara as well ;)

You can get it here:

„Sheep In The Sky“ für iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3. Generation), iPod touch (4. Generation) und iPad im iTunes App Store

Or simply search for "Sheep in the Sky" in the appstore on your iphone / ipad or ipod.

Also tell all your friends and relatives about it, the more downloads/ratings the better the visibility. :)

And please post feedback about the game here as well, I would love to know if you like it, hate it, think its too easy, too hard or too silly. :p

Thank you all and cheers

Thak (Marc)

PS. To all the Android users, we are thinking of porting the game, but its harder than it seemed to do... Ill keep you posted.

Important Layonara Announcements / Tech Update and a Request For Donations
« on: February 18, 2012, 04:55:51 pm »
Hi everyone,

I've made my decision about server hosting and we're not going to see as much down time as I suspected. We do have to transfer the web/lore/forums/irc to a new server but I suspect that will only take a late night downtime of those services, I expect that will be taken care of some time in the last few days of February.  The NWN servers are going to stay as is and as far as I can think, they will not need any sort of downtime.

While I worked on cutting some costs with our host provider I decided to pay for an entire year for all our servers. This comes at a much bigger front end cost of course, but in doing so I save 10% for the full year. This means we're committed to at least another year of all of our servers.

Now I know we haven't had the Donation Tracker working. I was hoping that by creating a manual PayPal donation campaign then whoever donates can post a reply to this thread (unless they wish to be anonymous) and I will confirm their donation with my gratitude and a virtual hug. I'm not looking for any specific target dollar but if I could get back $500 over the year from the community it would be fantastic. There's no timeline for this, so if things are tight right now I understand, but every little bit, even $5 helps!

For convenience I've created links to pay in four different currencies, AUD, CAD, EUR and USD. There is an area on PayPal to add a personal message, please include your forum or character name so I know who's who.

Donate to Layonara in AUD

Donate to Layonara in CAD

Donate to Layonara in EUR

Donate to Layonara in USD

Thanks to everyone for helping and once this server migration is complete I look forward to working hard on the new community site.

Best wishes,
James

Layonara Server / Areas I'd like to see again as a PC...
« on: February 13, 2012, 07:03:25 pm »
There are several areas that I recall visiting once, or perhaps twice, that I'd really like to see again. Do you have any favorites that feel almost like personal quests to reach them?

1. The Great Tree - My PC Bumblebee visited there just once on one of the few quest events I ever attended. It made a profound impression in his character development, and I've always wanted to go back.

2. The "Grove" - I really like NWN worlds where the players get to make their mark. The grove is like a who's-who of PCs that I OOC always looked up to.

3. Way Down There - I honestly have no idea where this place is OOCly. I managed to hook up with a couple of the Freelancers as they began a huge dungeon crawl. It was way into the wee hours of the morning, when I could barely keep my eyes open, that we reached the "boss" at the bottom. I died in that final encounter, as I recall, which was a fitting end to the epic trek.

4. Belinara - Having never had a PC reach 20th, Belinara was always outside of my "level range" (back when there was such a thing). It is a mythical unknown land where, unlike Mistone, if you dropped me down in the middle of it I would have no idea how to find my way to safety.

General Discussion / orth checking in.
« on: February 02, 2012, 12:14:20 am »
Hello friends, old and new. It's been a while since I've been able to sit down and take a breath but I promised myself I would take the time to catch up on what I've been up to and some of the things that have to be done on the technical end over the coming month.

To start, I wanted to say that Layonara is with my heart every day. The friends I made and the moments I shared in its fantasy setting will be cherished moments I'll hold through my whole life with no regret. The past year I've been at a distance, occasionally trying to force my way back into the magic that I know makes me feel like only roleplaying can make me feel. It's been there for short whiles but real world priorities get in the way and days away become weeks and then months. I'm not going to try to explain nor am I sure I even know why, it just happens.

Life's been pretty good. I've become a bit of a sports nut, I even bought season tickets to the Blue Jays for this summer. Nothing new on the love side of things, though a kiss stolen here and there. Work has had me with a lot less time than I was afforded a few years ago but I remain physically and mentally very healthy.

As with playing, my desire for working on the MMO has had to be forced and again other worldly concerns leave me getting side tracked then ultimately not having the fortitude to jump back into the development. I am making progress in a core area though and when I can catch a breath and bare down for the final touches I'll be eager to move on to the areas that others have continued to bear down upon.

Over the coming month there's going to be a few headaches from the technical end. One of our servers is old and has to be updated, this means I have to make a decision to either stay with our existing server setups or consider moving all of our servers to a cloud based setup. I've not made that decision yet and it's a pretty complicated one as Dorganath would be able to attest to as we discussed it on IRC. Once I make that decision I will get a better idea of downtime for all our servers, web, irc, nwn etc.

I touched on the core area I'm working on with the MMO and that's focused on the web end of things. Using the versatility and module rich Drupal CMS I'm developing both a front end to a new updated community site and a back end to the MMO database structure. This could mean some heavy work needed on LORE and perhaps *cringe* if I'm really feeling adventurous, I would transfer the entire forum to drupal's forum. Alternatively there are modules that allow both vBulletin and Drupal work side by side. I wonder, do any of you have Drupal experience?

So I guess that's kind of it for my update. I'll be informing you via the Important World Announcements forum about server downtimes as soon as I can possibly know and with as advanced notice as possible. I apologize in advance if this gets in the way of some scheduled quests.

My best,
James

Layonara Server / Version 3.30.8 is online!
« on: February 01, 2012, 09:01:04 pm »
Version 3.30.8 is online!

Hello all, it's been a while and there are some things that needed some attention, so here goes...

Please note there are no downloads required for this update.

 Changes:
 • Dogma and deity relations information added to Shrine to Prunilla in Center
 • Fort of Last Hope has been rebuilt
 • Forest Giant cave terrain adjusted to lessen the exploitable pinch point
 • House remodel for 150 Krandor
 • 150 Krandor moved to Port Hempstead
 • House remodel for 151 Port Hempstead Fields
 • Completely remove the last dependence on the old Talus Listener (voice commands) (1)
Fixes:
 • Restore missing transition to Shadison Viper temple exterior
 • Fix the number of uses for Stuffed Rice Cakes (2)
 • Fix infinitely repeating encounter in the Great Forest
 • Fix blueprint resref for the Black Pony creature, which prevented it from properly spawning
 • Fix damage on Flame Strike
 • Fix exit from North Point Craft Hall
 • Fix missing auto-close scripts in North Point areas
New stuff:
 • New go-between area to connect the Fort of Last Hope, its Outskirts and the Shadison Viper exteriors
Notes:
• The Talus Listener system was what we used to process voice commands before NWN version 1.69.  Since then, we have been using NWN's built-in chat handling events in parallel. Using NWN to handle chat is both faster and works with more characters. Though primary processing has gone through NWN's handlers for some time, we still relied on the Talus system to manage a list of command verbs that were stored in a configuration file on the server. This update removes the need for this and brings that function to be fully internal to NWNScript. As of this update, the /o syntax for voice commands will no longer be functional.
 • Existing Stuffed Rice Cake items will not be automatically affected.  This fix only applies to newly-crafted Stuffed Rice Cakes.
Thanks this time go also to Alatriel, Eorendil and Script Wrecked for their contributions as well as everyone who made suggestions or bug reports.

Enjoy!

Just for Fun / Happy Australia Day!!!
« on: January 26, 2012, 12:00:03 am »
YOU KNOW YOU'RE AUSTRALIAN IF:
 * You believe that stubbies can be either drunk or worn.
 * You're liable to burst out laughing whenever you hear of Americans "rooting" for something.
 * You pronounce Melbourne as 'Mel-bin'.
 * You believe the 'L' in the word 'Australia' is optional.
 * You can translate: 'Dazza and Shazza played Acca Dacca on the way to Maccas.'
 * You believe it makes perfect sense for a nation to decorate its highways with large fibreglass bananas, prawns and sheep.
 * You think 'Woolloomooloo' is a perfectly reasonable name for a place.
 * You're secretly proud of our killer wildlife.
 * You believe it makes sense for a country to have a $1 coin that's twice as big as its $2 coin.
 * You understand that 'Wagga Wagga' can be abbreviated to 'Wagga' but 'Woy Woy' can't be called 'Woy'.
 * You believe that cooked-down axle grease makes a good breakfast spread. You've also squeezed it through Vita Wheats to make little Vegemite worms.
 * You believe all famous Kiwis are actually Australian, until they stuff up, at which point they again become Kiwis.
 * Beetroot with your Hamburger... Of course.
 * You know that certain words must, by law, be shouted out during any rendition of the Angels' song 'Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again' And "Living next door to Alice".
 * You believe that the confectionery known as the Wagon Wheel has become smaller with every passing year.
 * You believe that the more you shorten someone's name the more you like them.
 * Whatever your linguistic skills, you find yourself able to order takeaway fluently in every Asian language.
 * You understand that 'excuse me' can sound rude, While 'scuse me' is always polite.
 * You know what it's like to swallow a fly, on occasion via your nose.
 * You know it's not summer until the steering wheel is too hot to handle and a seat belt buckle becomes a pretty good branding iron.
 * Your biggest family argument over the summer concerned the rules for beach cricket.
 * You shake your head in horror when companies try to market what they call 'Anzac cookies'.
 * You still think of Kylie as 'that girl off Neighbours'.
 * When working on a bar, you understand male customers will feel the need to offer an excuse whenever they order low-alcohol beer.
 * You know how to abbreviate every word, all of which usually end in -o: arvo, combo, garbo, kero, metho, milko, muso, rego, servo, smoko, speedo, righto, goodo etc.
 * You know that there is a universal place called "woop woop" located in the middle of nowhere...no matter where you actually are.
 * You know that none of us actually drink Fosters beer, because it tastes like . But we let the world think we do. Because we can.
 * You have, at some time in your life, slept with Aeroguard on in the summer. Maybe even as perfume.
 * You've only ever used the words - tops, ripper, sick, mad, rad, sweet - to mean good. And then you place 'bloody' in front of it when you REALLY mean it.
 * You know that the barbecue is a political arena; the person holding the tongs is always the boss and usually a man. And the women make the Salad.
 * You say 'no worries' quite often, whether you realise it or not.
 * You understand what no wucking furries means.
 * You've drank your tea/coffee/milo through a Tim Tam.
 * You own a Bond's chesty. In several different colours.
 * You know that roo meat tastes pretty good, But not as good as barra. Or a meat pie.
 * You know that some people pronounce Australia like "Straya" and that's ok.
 * And you will forward this list to other Australians, here and overseas, realising that only they will understand!!!
Have a ripper Australia Day everyone :)

Okay...  Was reading another thread just a minute ago and part of the discussion was about how some new items wouldn't be added due to an already over-stuffed item palette and it got me thinking of possible solutions that might be easy to implement to relieve some of that item palette crowding.

The most obvious was of course to look at 'flavor' items that are otherwise useless and lacking of value.  This would include removing things like the Stone Club or Rusty Red Light Dagger, which have penalties that make them undesirable for use by even starting characters.  However, I kind of like the flavor they add to the game-world with the descriptions they posess.

So, then I thought, why not yank out all those different individual Material Spell Components and replace them with tiered Material Component Bags with a limitted number of uses (charges) each?  Here's what I mean (and it would require some re-scripting of the spells I'm sure), but each spell-level would have one of these Material Component Bags with say 100 uses, set at increasing prices for each higher level at the magic vendors.  Any spell of level 1 that required a material component would use 1 charge from it's associated component bag when cast, rather than this bit of twisted leather, or that bit of bat guano, or whatever.  Any spell of level 2 uses a charge from a Level 2 bag, etc.  Alternatively, there could just be one bag for each three levels of spells (matching the tiers of the Eschew Materials feats), and higher level spells within a tier would simply use more charges.  So, in the first example a level 1 spell uses one charge from a tier 1 bag, a level 2 spell uses 2 charges, and a level 3 spells uses 3 (or 4) charges.  Then at 4th level spells you'd use 1 charge from a tier 2 bag, and so on.  You now have a platform for an additional gold-sink system (yes, casters, feel free to grumble if you like, but we all know those spells you cast at higher levels give you serious gold-earning advantage over non-casters when soloing.  So it adds some balance, I think.), and another bonus to mages is that they don't have to scrounge the world over for sometimes hard to find materials.  Heck, if you wanted you could still set up the system so it only affected lower level spells, and retain the current material component requirements for spells of level 7 and up, but you wouldn't have the benefit of removing quite as many items from the palette that way.  The Eschew Materials feats would still retain their value also, since they would free casters from the need to buy component bags, and thus also the need to carry said bags (which might have a suggested weight of 2 - 5 lbs. each).

Anyhow, it's an idea, and I'm sure there'll be other reasons than I've listed here as to why it can't or won't be implemented, but in my opinion at this moment it's still a good idea.    All constructive feedback, whether positive or negative, is welcomed.  However, let's avoid any heated flames, shall we?  ;)

...a tiny figure darts. Dressed in green, she is surely not a mouse. A small sickle, hardly capable of cutting wheat, is buried beneath a quill of quills on her back. Is that a glint of magical light from a sharp edge there in the corner? No, the glint comes from a flash of smile accompanied by a small clap and giggle. There is a bee buzzing amongst the tombs of the Great Library. What will she discover beneath the dust? Whispers perhaps? Of dragons, she hopes.

Rumour Has It / Mistites in Leringard
« on: January 09, 2012, 04:39:34 am »
After the turbulance of the last few months that has struck the Mistite faith around the world there appears to be signs that some sort of accommodation has been reached with the dragons that had been attacking the order.

A new Tide of the north has been announced to replace the former woman called Yashilla who had held the position for many years through guile and strength.

Newly appointed, Tide Hardragh set sail from Leringard for Molten isle before returning a few months later with Tide Murray who had been held there by the Pyrtechonites.

The Tempest and several other Tides were present in Leringard as Tide Hardragh's ship and Tide Murray's ship both docked safely.

Observers could plainly see the Tempests welcome of Tide Hardragh was cold but Tide Murray was warmly received. Tide Cassandra was also on hand to offer her congratulations to the new Tide Hardragh in his success of rescuing Tide Murray.

The return culminated in a celebration aboard the Mistites ship in the harbour.

In the days that follow is seems there will be a proper accounting of the losses the Mistites have suffered over the last 18 months and how they plan to hold onto what they have left and to rebuild what they have lost.

There are some talking already that perhaps the Misites have reached their peak and their decline is now imminent...

Layonara Server / Short Notice: Plot Catch-up events
« on: December 28, 2011, 03:05:50 am »
All,

I know this is short notice, but Rowana and I will be holding a Plot catch-up event this Friday/Saturday (timezone dependent).  The purpose of this event is to discuss and answer questions regarding the plot, state of the world and so forth.

This is an OOC event, and it will be in a moderated question-and-answer format (or at least that's the plan).  Please respect the procedure (to be given during the event) so that information can be conveyed with a minimum of difficulty for everyone.  This will essentially amount to asking questions in an orderly manner rather than everyone blurting out questions all at once.

The intent is to cover the "common knowledge" information that everyone (or almost everyone) would know. As such, it will not matter which character one brings (if one has multiples), since this information would eventually filter into general knowledge in some form or the other.  It is up to you to portray the information however your various characters might.

While we may not be able to get everyone or accommodate all schedules and time zones, we have decided on three events at different times:

Event 1
Event 2
Event 3

It is not necessary to attend all sessions, though you are welcome to do so.

These events are open to all. There are no level requirements. Prior involvement with the plot is not necessary.

Our intent is to start things rolling again in January, so this information will serve as reminders for those familiar with what happened and background for everyone.

General Discussion / Merry Christmas to all...
« on: December 25, 2011, 01:57:11 am »
... and to all, a good night!  *falls asleep*

Quote

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads.
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be Saint Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name!

"Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!
Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof
The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot.
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack.

His eyes-how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow.

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself!
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk.
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose!

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, 'ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!"
