Quests Ideas and Discussion / Dawn of Heroes II

Edrons choked and pain-filled screams rise above the crackling of fire that whips around you. One each side of you, bubbling lava spits and roars, billowing out heat.
And infront of you, guarding the only escape ... two of the massive fire creatures.

// Feel free to use this to RP anything you wish to do before the next session.
Or you can of course, wing it.  ;)

Important Layonara Announcements / Forum Outages
« on: November 27, 2009, 09:28:37 am »
Hello everyone!

Over the past few days the forums have been seeing a little more stress than normal and as such there have been intermittent issues and outages. This is not necessarily due to anything we can or can't talk about publicly at this time.

We do sincerely apologize for any inconvenience these problems may be causing and we would like to reassure you all that we're doing our best to balance the workloads and keep things running at status quo.

Layonara is going through some rather interesting growth over the next few months and so we can only ask for everyone to please bear with us as we all traverse these new waters.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

-- The Management.

General Discussion / Rabid Opinion Part Deuce
« on: November 25, 2009, 10:48:06 am »
Now that we've spent time considering, discussing, and debating what it means to be "epic" on Layo and some of the manners through which you'd get there, let's consider "epic" in terms of gamers playing a game. Reaching epic status, WL, etc. is Layonara's endgame. What's an endgame? It's what happens when you reach level 80 in WoW, what happens when you beat Mario Bro. (or any single player game) the first time, and what happens when when you can defeat any level of computer difficulty on Soul Caliber II. It's the "So I've got this awesome character who can kick the *** out stuff and has proved his/her awesomeness. Now what do I do with him/her?" In other words, what do you do when the game is over?

If you look at games today, especially multiplayer games, developers spend most of their time figuring out what to do for their "endgame." How do you keep people playing when they've essentially "won" the game? One route is to make a game with replayability by creating the game in such a way that there are many paths to the end. Many single player RPGs go this route. Another method is to continuously add content that caters to the the highest tier of success in the game. MMO's have lived heavily off this model, as there's usually ten times more content for 80th lvl characters than there is for any other level character. And of course there are other tricks, variations  and combinations of what I've already mentioned, all to keep the player invested and involved despite having already made it to the "top of their game."

Despite our limited resources, Layo has really utilized all of the above in recent years to address the growing number of players who had hit the endgame. We've added new and more content for the upper end of levels. And of course we've always had the ability to start a new character and play the game completely differently than we did before. However, the reality is that we can't produce content fast enough (our resources are rather limited, heh), and really, with the sort of world that Layo is (on the lower end of available magic and population), there's going to be a limited amount of "epic" material anyway. In other words, most of the world isn't of an epic nature.

Honestly, I don't believe NWN Layo was originally designed with this concept of endgame in mind. Pits, I don't think there was even a definition for "endgame" when Layo first appeared online. And with a world that keeps moving and changing, perhaps one might wonder how you could even have an endgame, and yet there does seem to be a limit on just how much your character can accomplish, however you feel that limit is imposed (hitting the level cap, becoming a WL, etc.).

Quote
So now I have a character that is high-level, influential, accomplished, a WL, I'm a good RPer, I give back to the community, I've done it all. I've been on big quests, little quests, allied with dragons and other players play my character's kids. Now what? Retire the character? Start over? But I like playing the character still, and I didn't want to do all this work just to retire the character. I want to use the power I worked so hard to get! Oh, you only need epic awesomeness on occasion? Yeah... I guess dragons don't attack everyday, huh... so I guess my character becomes a teacher... not too dangerous, but good interaction... not a lot at stake, but I'm still making a difference in the world... But my character has saved continents! and I'm reduced to a storyteller? Let's charge the Pits! that should be a challenge worthy of my hard-earned prowess! Oh... you can only get there with GM help... Yes, yes, it does make sense that few could get there and my character would likely get stuck there and... yeah, okay, I'll think of something else.

So I'm asking you, the community, now what?

I, of course, have some thoughts and answers regarding the "now what," but I'm interested in your answers.

New Character/Player Quests

Starting in two weeks time ( Dependant) , a series of ongoing quests will be run.
Rules and information are stated below.

-- Your character should ideally be "brand new" at level 1...but I will allow up to Level 4. You can of course log in to equip with basic weapons and armour, and customise clothing.. buy healing potions and bandages... supplies... ect

-- Level requirements will ascend as the group level ascends. For example...by the end of the first quest... I would expect everyone who started at Level 1 to be at least level 4 or 5. Therefore, the following quest will have a level Requirement of 1 -6... then 1 - 7... 1 - 8.... ect.

-- Your character should only be played on these quest's until the conclusion of the series. This will last for a minimum of two weeks, with 1 - 2 quests run per week. ( You "can" play your character outside of the quests if you wish, but should you exceed the next quests level requirements you will not be allowed to participate. NO EXCEPTIONS! As this will not be fair to those who decide not to play their characters at all. )

-- Equipment, armour and weapons can be found or purchased during these quests. There should be no need to find Guilds Ingame to purchase equipment, though again, this will be allowed providing you adhere to the above level requirement rule.

-- If you happen to miss a quest one day, you can still attend the next. Although level requirements will ascend, the minimum will remain at Level 1.

-- Quests will be Sundays at 8 or 10AM GMT (tbc)  and possible extra quests on Wensdays at 8 or 10AM..

The first starts here: http://forums.layonara.com/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=14832&day=2009-12-6

This would be a perfect opportunity to create that new character you had been thinking about, or for those new to the server to get a good start and meet new people.

This is of course dependant on the amount of interest shown here.

Please remember your character needs to be submitted and approved before you can login and join these quests!

General Discussion / The Arms...
« on: November 10, 2009, 02:57:01 am »
Hey I would just like to send a thank you to the GM (Carillion maybe?) that put the people in the Twin Dragon Inn. I havn't logged in with Tyrian in a long while, and I did (because of the unfortunate fire), not only was there a player there poking about (which was great RP!) but refugees... My thanks for helping me have a nice RP opportunity in a place I worked hard to get.

Much Love,

Ask A Gamemaster / Question about quest..
« on: September 21, 2009, 05:41:02 pm »
Okay.. I have been meaning to ask this for sometimes.  I often do not do quest because I am not sure on how do let the gm know things I want my character to do.

By that I mean, I will emote something and do a role or if the gm has requested I will wait to be told to roll.  So my question is.... if you emote something or ask a gm a question but you get no response... do you just take that as a no to whatever you did or continue to ask until you get a response?  I really hate bugging GM's on quest, even more so when there is a large party or demanding character/player on it.  So with that I often find it hard to get my characters involved on quest and feel like I'm just along for the ride.

Any ideas or tips from the GM's would be appreciated.
