Poetic License / The Ballad of Finnias McPhee
« on: December 05, 2009, 08:29:50 pm »
Written for the charity pie event for the Port Hempstead Orphanage, by Jaelle Thornwood.

The Ballad of Finnias McPhee

Ladies and gentlemen, sit back and relax
Enjoy all this pie and your sweet pastry snacks
But lend me your ears for a moment or three
And I'll tell you the tale of Finnias McPhee

My tale is of Finnias William McPhee
And a nicer young man one might never see
He had but one weakness, all would agree
And this is his tale as it was told to me.

You see, lads and lasses, an addict was Finn
No bones about it, one thing did him in
All sweets he'd resist, couldn't tempt him one bit,
Save for one treat, and even he would admit

That Finnias McPhee was addicted to pie
There wasn't a flavor that ol' Finn wouldn't try
He'd eat them by dozens, 'till at last he'd cry
“If I eat one more bite I think I might die!”

Yes, pie was his weakness, the chink in his shield
There wasn't a pastry to which he'd not yield
He'd hem and he'd haw and say “No I can't”
But he'd cave in the end, and then we'd all chant:

“Finnias McPhee, you're addicted to pie!
There isn't a flavor or type you won't try!
You may protest all you like, Finn, but it isn't a lie--
To all manner of pastry you'll always say 'Aye!' ”

A right connoisseur was my friend McPhee
A more knowledgeable piester there will never be
Peach, cherry, blackberry—he knew them all
And there wasn't a pastry that couldn't enthrall

Berry pies, sugar pies, flaky and sweet
Savory sausage pies stuffed full of meat
Bubbling desserts set to cool on the sill,
He'd ravish them all until he'd had his fill

And it got him in trouble, gods know that it did
He'd go after them even if outright forbid
And when the poor baker went to serve her dessert
Her face would turn scarlet 'till at him she'd blurt

“Finnias McPhee, I'm gonna kick you sky high!
I bet you think you're so cunning and sly
Sneaking into my kitchen and stealing my pie ...
That's it, you're cut off! Kiss my pastries goodbye!”

Poor Finn he'd be sorry and full of regret,
But no matter how bashful—or how dire the threat!--
The next time his nose caught a tempting aroma
He'd eat himself into a pie-induced coma!

And so it went on, Finn and his pies
And when Finn was in town every chef had his spies
They had to, you see, for when Finn caught a whiff
Of sweet golden pastry, it'd be gone in a jiff.

Say what you will, but no one will deny
Except for the pastries, Finn was a great guy
But sometimes I worried he just couldn't stop
And there might come a time when old Finn would just pop

Sure enough, there came a fateful spring day
When I found old McPhee at a pastry buffet
How many pies? I don't think they'd kept score
But he'd had at least twelve and was reaching for more!

“Finnias stop!” was my heartfelt war cry
“Put down the fork! Step away from the pie!”
But Finn couldn't stop, didn't even bat an eye
Just reached for the next as I heard myself sigh

He got through two more, but halfway through the third
The inevitable end at long last occurred:
He took one bite too many and let out a bellow,
And burst at the seams--though died a happy fellow

So you see lads and lasses, you can't overindulge
At the worst you'll explode and the least get a bulge
But in moderation, there's no finer treat
Than a pie, any kind—fruit, berry or meat.

Important Layonara Announcements / All Servers Back Online
« on: December 03, 2009, 08:47:52 am »
Greetings everyone!

After a bit of a struggle and a bad power supply, everything is back up and running across the entire Layonara domain. This includes LORE (which is doing a character update as I type this).

So, thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding during this time. It's sincerely appreciated.

Rumour Has It / A Madman sings at the Docks of Hempstead
« on: November 27, 2009, 06:26:17 pm »
*A strange man dressed in tuxedo, executioner's mask and feathered hat wails forth a tempest of song from the shores of Hempstead. He sings of death, destruction, courage, and in facing the storm. He sings to the sea monsters and dead drowned gods of old, the elves of the deep and the very barnacles clinging tot he husks of shattered ships. Persevere. Endure. Fight! His fingers spark into a magical fire across the fretboard as he frantically pumps out chords of discord, masterfully bringing a sense of godlike to the impending, looming doom of what is to come. Between sets he urges the crowds to run, flee... the second wav is coming. Go inland, climb the mountains and wait it out. And for those with will, stay to face the carnage that is to come. Raise arms and battle these beasts of the sea. Krakken, Aboleth, dread beings long forgotten beneath the waves. They come for us all, meet them. Slay them! A few may recognize him as one of the number who evacuated many citizens in the first wave, and who in a fit of madness, tied himself to a palm tree to meet the first wave of the tsunami.*

Poetic License / Song for Joyful Pandemonium
« on: November 08, 2009, 11:19:35 am »
Rockhead Howling Wolf, Dwarf and bard quickly spends the 20 true Joyful paid him for a song on ale.

"blast it all! I should have asked fer a hunnerd" he grumbles.

he hastily composes, drafts it onto parchment and posts it in the tavern for all to see as he promised notoriety. The note says the young woman still owes 10 true . the figure is crossed out and it now says 30 true.

The song reads.

I Hear a whisper in the trees,
a wondrous sound upon the breeze,
my restless thoughts it does appease,
Its Joyful!

She runs through forest, hand on bow,
her tread as light as new fell snow,
and none can spot her, friend nor foe,
Its Joyful!

A mighty elf with heart aflame,
she hunts the goblin, hunts the game,
and all will shout with one acclaim,
It's Joyful.

He finishes the ale and looks about for another customer as his belly is a long way from full.

General Discussion / Having joined the ranks of the net-less...
« on: August 14, 2008, 07:51:00 pm »
Hi. Anyone who noticed or cared that I have been largely absent, it may or may not end soon! I am 100% without NWN access on the weekdays now, and internet access to, you know, something like 90% without. Heh! I got a laptop I should have before the end of the month, which will have all my toys on it again. Until then, if there is anything I needed to do for you, please remind me so that I can try to fit it in on a weekend (if it is IG) or work it out/write it in PMs during the week.

In the meantime, for those that did not know, the treehouse at 158 Silverdell Grove (Whitehorn Forest) is always unlocked and has a free portal in the first room. If the room looks like it was cut in half, just keep walking - it's a tileset thing that is usually first-time-only and should fix itself.

You can read what books and newspapers are on the shelves so far, but I'm not done with the library yet.* If you do read them, please, please, put them back. I don't care if you play a CE assassin thief of Branderback, don't take the books! I'm not asking you to be nice IC - RP taking them and trying to set them on fire if you like, but for the sake of sanity acknowledge wards as well! It's not like the Great Library where they'll just re-appear on server reset. Plus, what are the odds that anyone even knows about it unless they read it here? So no excuses :P Maybe someday with a ridiculous hoard of gold there can be a scripted auto-return script, but for now, just leave them there, thanks - especially the real books, which I don't have replacements for. General Khain's journal and the book found in the Great Dungeon are the only ones at present, I think. I would rather just add a copy of them instead, to have an explaining note on them... but I digress!

If a book is in another language that your character has the ear for, just take the book off the shelf, use a quill on it (no writing! :p ) and type ~~translate into your chat bar. This goes for any language that you read, for current and future books... (Oh. And if you use the bath transition, you RP that you jump/climb/crawl down the crate. Don't ask! Don't mind the haunted piano.)

It's pretty obviously opened up as a sort of rest stop waystation type treehouse now. It's open to everyone despite a framed aged notice near the doorway (...opening, thing) that says
I have one furnished room available in the Whitehorn Forest for monthly rent for a trustworthy, considerate, respectful individual. There's adequate storage, comfortable bed, plenty of shelving, and a reliable teleporter. If interested in seeing more and discussing rates, look for me or the mephit here playing cards. -Aleister

These individuals need not apply: orcs, ogres, dark elves, paladins, thieves, very angry people, people shorter than me by more than 2 feet, clerics, giants, bards, druids, barbaric people, people with nervous ticks, people that fall down a lot, blue haired people, people that don't like that old people smell, Turor, the inquisitive type, the type would would ask "whats the strange noise" then barge into my lab, people with very large cats, people with bears, people with all other animals, animal people, drunks, fanatics, busy bodies, people that stare, people that like pie too much, friends of Turor, hippies. Thank you. -Al

One might almost think that it was opened up as a forest waystation on purpose.

Anyway, I should be seeing at least somebody soon. The lack of reliable computer access is killing me. Inbox is open as usual.

*For those interested with access, I made an index for me to update whenever I add something here.

Introduce Yourself / well its about time.
« on: January 21, 2015, 03:47:02 pm »
update: 29 April 2019
Hmm, 4 years since I last touched this and ten years from the initial post. So some updates are in order. Firstly, Both of my pain in the arse children made me a grandfather 4x. Son has a daughter, Daughter has 2 daughters and a boy. Coincidentally, my newest favorite t-shirt reads "Great Dads get promoted to Grandfathers!". Still married, still working the same job except I got a nice lateral and upward promotion with pay raise. What else? Oh, enjoying 5th Edition immensely since a game store opened in town and Roll20 provides some online game time as well with friends scattered near and far.
I must say, I'm excited about Layo moving to Enhanced and I'm going to be giving the transfer a try tonight, already got NWN enhanced , might as well see if I can get Layo working. End of update.

Hello, I've been in Layo for more than a year now but I've never taken the time to introduce myself since the new forums came about. My rl name is Chuck Nicholson and I live and love it here in Southern Minnesota, USA. My Characters here on layo are Ben and Daniel Poetr, two brothers who started from similar backgrounds, grew apart, and are now discovering they have more in common than they thought. Other facts of note: Married almost 17 years to my high school sweetheart, Nancy, and have two pain the arse yet beautiful children, one, my son of 16 years, some of you have met in the guise of Tragor, the half giant. Christine is my oldest and only daughter 17 going on 25 if she has her way. Other fairly close family members who play here are Talia, my sister and Zergon her boyfriend. My real life job involves hardware and software support for a web based lab application and I work for Mayo Foundation in Rochester, MN. To put it bluntly, I'm a hardware monkey..troubleshooting and swapping parts on dell boxes, shipping em off via Fed Ex to keep client sites happy.. Its a boring job, but it pays the bills. As a perk, I often times get to play at work. *looks around for his supervisor.* I started D&D a long time ago when the white wizard graced the cover of the first edition players handbook and through the years have played a more bash style game in various pen and paper groups. Layonara was both a pleasant surprise and a learning experience for me, one I've grown to love, much to my spouse's dismay as my Saturdays and Friday nights are now spent online. Sundays are suppose to be family day, but If I beg hard enough, sometimes I'll be here. I'll leave you all with a quote most should recognize- I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve. - *smirks* seeya ig. *some 8 years later*Wow, where does the time go!? and The written word is merely a glimpse through darkened glass at the changes within ourselves and others. I'll stick the form this time I think. I've grown lazier in my old age. :PForum Name: cbnicholson
