A Skirmish in Leringard
« on: March 03, 2010, 04:01:38 pm »
Many Leringard citizens wake one stormy spring morning to the sight and sounds of a large crowd milling around the Leringard Home For Delinquents, Leringard's orphanage, which for many years has taken in and cared for children of all sorts.

Signs of a very heated battle are all over the area. Those asking around find many witnesses who can attest to the fact that at some point during the night, a large group of mercenaries started making their way into the orphanage with the vile intent of bringing it down--and some say also slaughtering all those within. Many give full credit that the place still stands to the Blackwatch, who were quick to respond when a citizen reported screams to one of the late night patrols. A long and heated battle ensued, with the Blackwatch gritting their teeth and buckling down for many hours in what became a small guerrilla war. They fought the mercenaries with their own dirty tactics, creating enough of a distraction to allow the Headmistress, Lyn Tobias, to escape with the children out a cellar stormdoor.

The Blackwatch suffered two casualties and many sport nasty wounds, but they emerged triumphant. Miraculously, none of the orphans seem to have been seriously harmed, though several sport scrapes and bruises from the hasty escape. One orphanage worker was killed in the initial attack from the mercenaries, and Lyn is being treated for injuries. The mercenary bodies were dragged out and laid out in front of the orphanage to be examined, but as yet there is no clue as to who sent them.

The children seem resilient, and some of the excited orphans are now making the best of the situation. (Kids will be kids.) A few started up a game of "Blackwatch and Villains" in the orphanage's yard, with the "Blackwatch" running down the "villains" and saving the day. They also made up a little chant that has become contagious, even amongst some of the adults:

"The Blackwatch are thugs! But they're Leringard's thugs!"

A number of Leringard's citizens, including a few nobles who have complained about the Blackwatch's brutal but thorough tactics in the past, seem to turned over a new leaf or at the very least have had their eyes opened. There is a rumor that one has donated a large sum of True to the Blackwatch, as thanks for all that they do in protecting Leringard.

*hearing of the news, a rather rotund and battle-harded Dwarf comes out of retirement and begins patrolling the streets of Leringard, particularly around the orphanage and tradeschool. He begins asking around about the thugs and the Blackwatch and introduces himself to them as Bjornigar Ironguts, Defender of Dorand.  To the Blackwatch he pays his respects and offers at-cost discounts on any copper to platinum armors they might need.  To the various thugs and vagrants he comes across, he offers a heavy handed warning... those who target children in this town will face the wrath of Dorand's Thunder and their bloody bones ground into dust.

He also drops by the orphanage offering his services as a tradeskill instructor and offers room in his own home for instructional crafting classes and free boarding for any children the orphanage cannot already accomidate.*

Tyra, on her return from Hurm, hears the news and immediately goes to the Orphanage to stand outside, deck out in Platinum armor, two mean swords on her hips and a tower shield strapped to her back.  Anyone who comes near the building she looks over closely, and any that don't look like they should have children she glares at if they approach.

If she had any say, no one would get inside that orphanage that didn't sit right with her.

*Andrew nearly bumps Tyra as he leaves, walking backward and still singing to the children.  He gives her a short nod and his familiar grin, says goodbye to the kids, and promises again to the caretaker to return to give more lessons.

He speaks to Tyra, quietly, as soon as the door is shut.*
