A report from Nus the bard at Haven

I have just witnessed the raising of the standard of a new Army of the Silkwood. This force seems to be mainly comprised of light companies of foot and will operate in the Silkwood following recent events there.

Initial reports suggest Corathite Cultists have been defeated at the hands of a paladin led patrol out of Haven. Though other information would seem to suggest many local bandits, and soldiers of Haven also fell in running battles deep in the forest. This along with reports of anomalies in the Al Noth has caused some concerns and the situation remains confused and fluid.

The new army was addressed by a delegation from Spellgard led by a specialist Storold Doesscha concerning the dangers and likely signs of dead magic areas.

The army of Silkwood has recently returned from an effective sweep of the forest around Haven. The army reassured many remote woodland settlements and chased off would be bandits. It's lead patrol pursued Pit creatures into an underground lair and destroyed them. There have been no more sightings.

This underground lair was formerly a Dwarven outpost and sadly the only single historical document to be found there was destroyed in at best what might be described as unfortunate circumstances by one of the soldiers.

Some bodies were recovered from the previous fighting and given proper burial.

 The army has been disbanded.

Whilst it is generally agreed things have improved in the Haven area. There is still increased bandit activity and a corresponding enhanced patrol plan. There remains a significant opinion among farmers, woodsmen and travellers that chaos prevails and the Haven Militia response is too little too late in many instances.

*Strangely, some farmers have noted that a heavily armoured individual wrapped in a dark cloak has been seen entering Silkwood through the Haven area. They mutter it must be some demonic spirit searching for something or someone. Signs against evil are made and no more is spoken of it.*

Not uncommon, however, is the sight of a man well known in Haven, Shiff Dragonheart, standing near the borders of Haven that face Silkwood Forest.  Sword in hand, he keeps watch for any signs of trouble...

*heard in and around Haven*

Not long after Shiff Dragonheart a well known figure in Haven had waved past a patrol of Haven guard on it's way south, word reached Haven of an ambush north of the Castle.

Dragonheart was among those who rushed to the scene. A small wagon gathering and it's escort had been slain and the cargo of simple farm products carried off. It seems the perpetrators had been dressed in Haven Uniform. It seems to this bard that no one is safe around the inaptly named Haven these days.

from the scene, news almost as it happens, I'm Nus the bard

Shiff sighs as he wanders the scene...

I'm getting too old for this...

He then heads to Haven Castle to try to get an audience with someone to deal with the problems around the area.

Haven Castle acknowledges an increase in complaints of all manner of issues and dispatches extra patrols hither and thither in a reassuring manner. An outlying farm was burned to the ground. The one survivor heard shouts for Shadon among the hooded raiders.

In a proud moment for the Local Militia two Shadonite trixters were brought to justice for impersonating a tax collector. The tax was not recovered and where no proof of payment is available citizens may be asked for tax - this time from a real tax collector. Citizens are reminded of the need not to attack the collector.

Meanwhile some merchants have resorted to forming wagon groups to avoid raids by bandits, Militia garbed bandits, or Shadonites garbed as tax collectors, or indeed tax collectors.

Apologies for late cancellation of todays game (arms for leringard) RL prevents me running it at short notice - particularly anyone up late or early for this.

A heavily escorted wagon convoy of armour bound for Leringard made it safely through. On the return journey the empty wagons were stolen somewhere near Haven. Some of the wagon drivers were found poisoned. One appeared to have been tortured. Extra Militia patrols have been promised and for those not travelling by wagon it is considered likely mostly safe.

Rumours have circulated around Haven's darker corners of strange figures scouring the forest asking about old ruins and sites sparking tales of lost treasure and dragons. This in turn has attracted some unsavoury types around town seeking their fortune. Travellers are minded to look after their wealth and health!

What with many slayers and paladins absent, and other mercenaries employed north of Hlint local merchants have had trouble hiring sufficient escorts to transport mine and other goods across the Silkwood. A large backlog of goods has built up at haven.

Shiff the volunteer is asked to help oversee a Guard rota and a security detail for the Haven Mining Cartel. On the other side of the wall an agnet of Gork shrugs and sends word back to Gork that the current stock of iron and platinum, though sizeable is not likely to be worth the candle yet!

An emissary from the Arm of the Ram is secretly sent to attempt contact with the bandits. He is authorized to promise large secret shipments of high quality weapons and other aid in exchange for a continuing harassment of other merchant caravans and a "turning of the head" for those marked as "Ram" wagons... If captured, it is assured he would take his own life with poison before any information is obtained from him.

*A Halfling who is short even for a Halfling with black greased-back hair and mirrored goggles covering his eyes is seen in Haven occasionally eyeing the stockyards where iron and other ores awaiting shipment are kept.  Whenever he is seen it is just with a glimpse that folks manage to catch sight of him before he slips around a corner, or somewhere out of sight.*

A Toranite led patrol led a sweep of the Silkwood as traders set off for the west coast via the forest. The Toranite patrol returned after a mission near the dark place known as Arindor's demise. They seemed tired but in good spirits and had little to report. Further activity was expected.
