Goldwin was killed outright by a malar today and I'm not sure why. Simply-the log entries were something like this: Malar attacks Goldwin-death attack (die roll) miss. Fortitude save vs poison (die roll) failed. Bionk! Malar killed Goldwin. Been poisoned by malar before but wasn't killed outright just slowly loosing HP. How did I get boinked outright? Can someone shed some light on malar attacks which I know are many and varied, and why was there instant death if the death attack failed?

I confirm that their poison, upon failing the fortitude save, has killed Cole instantly in the past, though it was the secondary effect of the poison.

"...Fortitude save vs poison (die roll) failed..." That does not mean the death attack failed as I believe you are thinking (reading your post again). It means that you failed your fortitude save.

Esi has some experience being killed by Malar.

I think what you see from a secondary effect of their poison is a Constitution of 3 (but I may be confusing this with the dark spider poison), which makes your constitution modifier (-4). Given that a wizard has a d4 hit die, this tends to have unpleasant consequences.

Others may have better info on this, but it isn't exactly something anyone wants to experiment with in game.

Ahh Malar.. love them so much. knockdown, true seeing... And what happened to you goldy, there poisens second effect is death. Such a lovly beast.

Daeron had to take a dive in the murky water there once because of those cats. Either that or dieing, he chose the murky water.

Frotect for everything-ok! That whole spawn is strangely funny. Sometimes one can whitness malar attacking snake; Vampire maiden attacking malar, or malar stunned by snake's gaze. Every little bit helps!
