Question about Illusion and Shadows
« on: September 25, 2005, 07:11:00 am »
Bil is a wizard illusionist and as you know some spells of illusion in NWN allow you to summon shadows.  What I want to know is if in game purposes these are counted as undead.  I think in the NWN engine they probably are but what about in Layonara?  The reason I ask is that Bil won't summon undead but he would summon a an illusion of a shadow from the plane of shadow if they weren't undead creatures.  Because of this I haven't used them to summon yet but I'd like to know the answer if poss :)

I think for RP purposes the shadow illusion Bil summons would probably be an illusory version of something frightening from his own past, and if I understand the way the (RP) illusion spells work you summon a not-quite sentient being from the plane of shadow who lends the illusion of life to your creation. The illusion is not alive per-se, but it is also not a once-dead and reanimated thing either. I'm of the opinion that your illusion  would NOT be undead, though it might be classified as a 'negative' being, like undead are.

Everything from the plane of shadow is some kind of perversion of what can be found on the primal plane. At least, that's what I always thought.

Also, shadowmagic involves not only illusional magic, but also nercromancy.

So, it also deals with the negative energy plane and I believe a lot of players deem using negative energy evil.

hmm I'm not so sure....the 3.5 ed handbook only says 'illusionary creature' so it really doesn't sound like its undead.  And really it doesn't even mention plane of shadow either so perhaps its just that an illusion something which is not real ect.  Anyway I just want to make certain of this as Bil is very anti undead and wouldn't raise one unless he was forced to.  And illusion as a seperate school entirely to Necromancy cannot really be counted as necromancy surely?

Thanks this is more or less what I thought but I thought that the creature might not really be real at all just illusion.

question on the whole shadow and negative energy plane existence. What ever happeneing to the opposing elemental planes, in particular the positive energy plane?
will we ever see para-elementals and quasi-elementals in game?

I know that in old 2nd edition, in particular the Fiend Folio(I know a book blast from the past), there were two quasi-elementals from bot positive and negative planes, that when they did meet, they did go boom and cancel each other out.

There are quasi-elemental creatures in-game I think. Dust mephits and such, so the quasi-elemental planes are probably also used. Not 100% sure, though.

We have quasi and para-elementals in game, though for most purposes you generaly dont want to meet them.

If you do, run. Or make very sure you know what you're doing... *chuckles* (and yes, that does imply they're my more favourite 'monsters')
