Equipment help
« on: December 11, 2007, 11:59:46 am »
Is there anything besides iron reinforced clothing that gives 0% or low spell failure that also give ac bonus?  Also, is there anything like bracers of defense or rings of protection.  I may be missing these items in the forums but it seems these have been taken out of the game.  On another front, why have all the elemental gloves been taken out for monks?  Is this something that was done for a balance issue or were they just deemed inappropriate?

Thanks

Iron reinforced clothing is just one of many, The list is Iron, Platinium, Adamantinium, Cobalt, Mithril and some even offers a bit of DR too. Edit, I forgot the most important thing for monks, the special monk armors which increases some skills together with AC, these are found/made in lesser(+1AC), normal(+2AC) and greater(+3AC) versions but the level req. are rather high for the last two, 13ish and 18ish if I remember correctly.
Elemental gloves, now without knowing what you are reffering to here I will assume you mean gloves with elemental damage, these are made by using an enchantment rod on a pair of gloves for the effect of +2, +1d4, +1d6 or +1d8 damage of the choosen elemtal type. Only one can be applied at time though, but you can add silver or Titanium rods on top of them though.
Bracers of defense and rings of protection are rather high end drops but can be found by chance every now and then.

"Some skills" = Discipline.  hehe

The common glove types are Lion, Malar, and Dire Bear, which give +1, +2, and +3 to-hit, respectively.  That's all they do by themselves, but as Pibemanden said, they can have elemental damage added.

Though I have never found such drops myself, I know there is a slim chance for more 'standard' glove drops.  I think they tend to be high-level drops.  My character got a pair of +3 gloves with a +2 Sonic damage bonus as a gift (thanks Lala!), which she wore for a long time in lieu of her more damaging fire or cold damage gloves because a quiet Halfling doing sonic damage is funny.

If you can find somebody willing to sell some shield amulets, those were very useful in raising AC for all classes.  Before Kuhren ate him, there was a man named Johan who handed out some very useful /5 bludgeoning resistance cloaks, and Ronus handed out those +1 dodge ac boots for slaying the goblin chief near Hlint.  Many older players no longer use these, so you might have a good chance of buying a pair of those.  Then when you are much higher level and have a ridiculous amount of gold saved up, some of those ioun stones can be useful, as are any stat boosting gear like dex rings and wisdom rings.  If you can find somebody selling exceptional versions of those, I believe they cast cats grace and owls wisdom 1/day fo a little added monk ac boosting.

When you hit 10th level, the Lesser Lady's Gift Lucindite robes are very nice +1 clothes with some bonuses to healing and spellcraft.  Around 14th or 15th level you can use a dragonskin buckler which bestows -5% spell failure, I believe you could safely combine those with some very light padded armor.

Jennara clearly let her fists do the talking while she was wearing those gloves ;)

good luck :D Truly though lets make a petition to get those amulet back. First of the rings only works if you wear them, meaning you lose the use of ability rings for fighter and other class or magical rings for caster. Personally i think that was a bad move and a waste of palette space, but that is me. I haven't seen any one buying them in ages either when people saw you had to wear them to have the benefits.

bring the shields amy back:p

You'll find that most elemental weapons have been removed from the module, or are at least dropped/given out at very rare opportunities because of the Enchanting system that Layonara has in place.

Also, just as a side note, if you look at the trade hall listings of the major guilds, you should be able able to get a good idea of what kind of items are out there. Asking other characters IC what kind of clothing they wear, or asking crafters is also a good way of figuring out what the best kind of equipment is, as most of them are very helpful and knowledgeable about the stuff they make.
For a monk, I would advise lesser monk's robes, and then when you can switch to platinum reinforced clothing at level 11 I think, do so, then get cobalt when you can. Both have slashing resist 5/- which comes in quite handy.
As far as elemental stuff goes http://forums.layonara.com/cnr-suggestions-discussion/94088-resource-enchantment-level-level-required-list.html is invaluable. You'll be looking at the lion malar and dire bear boxes. Getting a silver enchantment, which helps against undead, as well might be a good idea, assuming you plan on killing lots of undead things.

Since the Rakshasa departed our world, shield rings can no longer be made, exceptional or not.

We must run a CDQ specifically to gate them back in and unleash them somewhere!  Or maybe breed them in shackles and cages like puppy mills.

Yes but if I am not mistaken the Rakashi eyes needed to make the new shield rings do not even drop anymore. =P
