    Had enough! (language)
    « on: October 05, 2005, 03:18:00 pm »
I've had a dim dobly dongly noth with people saying //don't use the bad language or //don't swear everytime i say ass.
Now I don't know if its something with those friggin americans out there but in england 'ass' is used in these ways:

1- to describe a close relative of the common horse.
2- to call someone an ass means a vain, self-important, silly, or aggressively stupid person.
3- to fall on ones ass. (also known as buttocks, nates, arse, butt, backside, bum, buns, can, fundament, hindquarters, hind end, prat, rear, rear end, rump, stern, seat, tail, tail end, tooshie, tush, bottom, behind, derriere, fanny)
(now if someone to say fanny in game, I would consider that inapropriate use of language as it is another word for a womans privates)
So please. STOP with the don't swear, don't use inaproriate language. It is not a swearing word. I use it in the ways it should be used.
You take it as a swear word due to the common phrase we all know as 'a*****e'

    Thank you for your time.

Words do in fact have different meanings depending on where your from.

I've stuck with adivce I was given by a DM long ago.... treat the server like a PG-13 movie or even a PG movie.

I have seen my share of cursing in game but it happens when every one knows everyone.

Keep in mind we have players out their I beleive as young as 10.

Har, misread part of that.Edited. But in any case it's not really you who gets to decide what is or is not appropriate. If Leanthar posted and said "No." that would be that, whether or not anyone feels it is a real "swear" or not.

    I personally don't care.

but they know the words have bad meanings BECAUSE there parents and people around them use it and call each other it all the time. If they were at all educated they would know the actual meanings to these words, and seeing as I don't use swear words, only ass which isn't even a swear word, they shouldn't have anything to worry about should they?
I'm only 16, but when i'm happy, i say , yes i'm feeling rather gay today. Its just that people are brought up not to know what the words actually mean and rather take words with different meanings.
I do use the odd word how they should be, but due to todays slang and whatnot, you can't even say a simple sentence with getting a reply of 'what did you just call my momma!? or 'Time for a knuckle sandwhich!'

Well, essentially what it boils down to is the lowest common denominator, within reason. If someone is, within reason, offended by a word you use, don't say it. It has near to nothing to do with how you feel about the word. Things are different everywhere you go... I was hitch-hiking in a foreign country once (southern hemisphere) and, standing by the road with my thumb up I found out the hard way was akin to flipping them the bird where I come from, so... although my thumbs up to ME was a perfectly acceptable gesture, to the little old lady who spit at me, it definately was not.

And basically, whether I think the word is bad or not, if you've been asked politely not to than please dont. It shouldn't be up to the GM team to have to compile a list of acceptable terms, use arse instead.

In America, and more specifically to me, it is a swear word and one that does not need to be used.  So I will indeed ask you again to not use the word.
Vyris, "....Now, I'm going to go gather a faggot to burn, play nice now...."  That was uncalled for, please do not use that type of phrase again.

I was just referring to the elder term for a bundle of sticks, which I just got back from getting from the woodshed, but I'll edit it out, probably could have made my point differently.

so your saying that on Layonara. We MUST speak american english and not the true english.
i.e. colour must be spelt color. centre must be spelt center. Fanny, although offensive to me is allowed because your speaking in american english.
I'll go buy myself an american to english dictionary then. since although the same language, the american way sure is weird.

(also you said 'so i'll ask you again' but unless i missed it i don't remember you telling me not to use it other than that time?)

I don't think you really need to be personally offended... It really doesn't seem like a huge concession. If you want to start things on principle, maybe it should be one worth the time?

yes ... considering the servers are based in California, and the world was created by Americans. Just as if I were playing on a server based in Germany, I would expect to find people speaking German, if you are playing a game based in America, assume it will by primarily in American English ...

I know this sounds rude, but it actually makes sense. If we don't make some standard, then we will end up with people running around speaking all sorts of languages, and that will make things difficult. As for the rule on cussing, well, I would say anything you wouldn't say on camera for a local news station, I wouldn't say here.

True English? Does that even exist any more? There are so many dialects that though you speak English in Canada, US, Australia, New Zealand, UK and many other places yet I've never had an easy time understanding the immense amount of slang used in each region. Even the simple differences between Newfoundland and Ontario are so much that I can barely understand what they're saying... however... if you say "washroom", "restaurant", "elevator", "appartment" or any other commonly understood word everything is allright.   Also, while the word "ass" may be an actual word with it's original meaning being "clean" it is still on the list of curse words. We need to keep this world clean (unlike the real world we can directly effect change within Layonara) so please refrain from the use of any language and any word that is considered a "foul" or "curse" word even when the context implies alternate meanings.  So the language rule in place for Layonara should not be considered a hard line rule on region based language preference but instead what is required is the use of "Commonly used and clean English".

            • to describe a close relative of the common horse
              • Donkey. Mule.
              • to call someone an ass means a vain, self-important, silly, or aggressively stupid person
                • "You're such a commoner, grow up."
                • to fall on ones ass
                  • IMHO (Leanthar, please correct me if I'm wrong) "bum" or "backside" are perfectly suitable "Common English" phrases that get the point across.
                  [/list]Thank you for your time.

i knew this lady once that played here, she told me she was "going to smoke a fag" i was like... oh my god... what the heck? i thought she said she was going to shot a gay person... lol turns out she like to smoke cigirets. hehe. Now... we have english, and then we have American. American is not english, even though most of us here havent figured that out yet, it is close and can be nearly traslated the same... but it is a different language, SO just becouse you can understand most of the words, dont be offended so fast by words that seam out of place.

In America it means essentially what you outlined, the difference is in America it has more derogatory undertones. To quote back at you your own example. You pointed out that Fanny is more of a cuss to you than the other word. Well in America you could say it is the other way around. Fanny is a more polite way of referring to your backside and the other is much ruder.

Its a fairly common and rude remark about a person or body part. It's never nice or appropriot, if it were on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being polite, it would rank a good 5 or 6 with the four letter words being 11's. And I fully agree with L and Vyris. Using Arse is a much more appropriot term when dealing with people you don't know.

*later* oh good grief I'm the slowest poster in the world. now everyone has had their say.

There isn't really a list. We rely upon common sense and the community to help keep the clean nature of the world.

However, I will consult Leanthar in private and we may post a list of the "best known bad words".

Please do not take anything I've said here as personal attacks or anything of the like.

I'm simply empassioned by this world and sometimes get vocal on touchy issues like this one.
