Author Topic: Not being able to get to the servers (Read 359 times)

I can't get to the servers...I mean I downloaded the v1.68 and when I press "multiplayer" and type out my player name and password it says "could not connect to Master Server, some multiplayer services may not be available"
I then press ok to pass that and it says "connection failed, try another nick" I press retry, about a split second later it comes up agian. then I try to direct connect to the server it then says "attemping to find sever" a few seconds.....then "connection to server has failed. server is not responding(timed out) What have I done wrong?

Are you playing on a corporate or campus network or behind a firewall?

If so you need to unblock a number of ports that NWN uses to connect to servers. There is a how to somewhere on the bioware nwn site, in fact, I believe they have it written in the premium module FAQ as well (which will probably be easier to find.)

I am really sorry..but i know next to nothing about computers so I do not know about a fire wall and all that...I'll ask my dad he may check about it all

This has happened before, we did get the problem fixed. The problem is we can not see the servers, nothing on that game spy screen. Talan said we should change ports, we got to the port screen, it says "name of port" or something close to that. Then the port number I know what the ports are but not the names. My mom knows nothing about the game and tried to fix it, my dad knows a but ton of the game and plays it all the time and tries to help but he doesn't know. When you all update the servers, etc, we never had a problem with downloading the items to play, why now?

No idea, the port number is 5121 though.
Did you try the 'Direct Connect' button? If not, try that and use west.layonara.com as address, the password is as normal.

I've had a similar problem before, and the cause was the firewall that came with my newly installed McAfee VirusScan Enterprise. It blocked both inbound and outbound IRC communications(port 6666-6669) which my NWN uses to communicate with Game Spy server for some reason. After changing the filtering rules that 'Unable to connect to master server' error never happened again. So I guess you may want to check your firewall settings, just to make sure.

Ok, thanks, I'll try it. But I have tried the "direct Connect" button and it says the server has timed out.

Just incase......when you first attempted to play your Norton Anti-virus or Spyware may have kicked in, asking to allow access to NWN online. If you happened to select....Never Allow....it will never allow you to connect to the server.
Just a thought, I aint much on computers, but check the permissions incase.

Disable your firewall before logging in next time. Just right click and use the disable function and turn it off until restart. Usually a blank gamespy screen means your firewall is blocking your comp communicating with gamespy, so no servers show up.

And firewalls reset once you update the version as it's now a 'new' program running that's not identified. You'll find this happens with your firewall whenever there's a version update.

So just turn off or reset the firewall? Sounds easy enough. You are talking about the on the contral penal right? When I right-click, it says "Open" or "Create shortcut"

Not talking about the control panel. Talking about an installed firewall program.

Are you using windows? If you have a firewall program (Norton, McCrazy, etc), they'll show in the lower right hand corner of your screen typically, right next to the time. You can open them by double clicking and do it that way, but for most you can right-click and just select "disable firewall". Then it'll give you a time period selection, choose 'until next reset', or whatever phrasing it's using. Either that or go into your start menu and look through your programs until you find what firewall you're running. Open it up, and there should be an option to shut it off or disable it. The goal here being to turn off your firewall so it won't block you.

What you described really sounds like the 1.68 update resetting your NWN file so that your firewall blocks it as a new program trying to communicate online. This is why gamespy is not showing anything for you, it's not letting NWN get all that information from online. That said, I could be wrong and it wouldn't be the first time.

Well if you're using windows firewall, go to Control Panel-->Windows Firewall-->In 'General' you can do one of the two things:
1, Turn it off completely. This may leave your computer vulnerable against certain attacks though.
-or-
2, Leave it on, but DO NOT tick 'Don't allow exceptions' option. Then go to 'Exceptions', check if NWN is in the list, if not, click 'Add program' button and pick 'Neverwinter Nights' from the list or locate it using the browse button.

After doing this windows firewall shouldn't be blocking NWN any more. If you still have problems then it should be something else.

We have done everything above, except the ports..which we do not know how, and it has not fixed the problem. Thank you for your help, and if you have anything else that may work, please do not hesitate to post a suggestion and we'll try it.

If you can specify which firewall program(s) you're using, I'll try to get a detailed description about how to unlock certain ports n stuff

Oh and please specify, if possible, how are you connected to the internet, like direct connect through phone line/cable; shared connection through router(both LAN and WLAN) with firewall; university network, etc, etc...

We play in a wireless router through cable, and we do not have a firewall program, we deleted them all. My dad has recently tried the LAN games and they both did the same thing as the Layonara's server. My parents are thinking of just reformatting the whole computer, and hopefully that will work.
