I really like it here, but....................
    « on: June 22, 2005, 04:03:00 PM »
I really like it here. The world is great the history, the detail everything is first rate. But I'm beginning to be afraid to be myself here. I replied to a post tryin to give another new player alittle pick me up. In my reply I mentioned the satisfaction I got when I lvl'd. Then someone posts right after me that lvl'g is not important. Then why is the #1 answer in the better RP poll more xps for RP. If lvl'ing isn't that important why do you want xps? Now I see posts about running in town so now I'm thinking who's gonna get bowed up because I run by them to try to catch up to my group. I try to stay in char as best I can. But I see Elves hanging with dark elves thats ok but running in town is a major issue? And there are other things. Being new, I try to talk to as many people as I can. But most give me a "Hello, sorry but I gotta run". I came up with a path for char. to follow. Th e original GM I ran it by thought it was a good idea. So I try to do CDQ quest deal and get "I'll think about it" I want to be in GM events but the majority are either to high a lvl, or start too late or too earlyy for someone on the east coast, or are filled.

Sorry, guess I just needed to vent a bit. But if most off you think I'm way off base let me know. Then I will know I am in the wrong place.

Apply for a character, then log in and try the server for a few hours. You will be hooked. :)

I've played for 4 days now. I like it here. That is not the problem. I guess it just seems that people are not havin fun because they are to concerned with what other people are doing or concerned with what others think of them. I just wanna play and have fun on a great server.

Now I may be acting a little defensive here but take a moment to think about your criticisms.

You summed up how much you likes it here in under 20 words, then the rest was all the negative aspects.

Now in my opinion it seems this is typically the case, the good points are glossed over in a short sentence and then people really focus on the negative aspects to a micro degree.  When a world involves so many different other people, there are bound to be differing opinions and conflict.  We just brought on a number of new GMs who are being trained and the quest amounts will rise soon, so be patient.

What I'm really trying to say is focus on the good, and be yourself, don't be afraid of what you say or do, just don't break the rules. :) Come to your own conclusions based on discussions.  If you are confident you are doing your best to your enjoyment of the game, then continue to do so.  If a GM sees something that he/she thinks is not something we'd like to see, then they will give you a helpful reminder.

Not sure if that helps, sort of my thoughts on things though.

      Cheers

Be yourself and believe in yourself... Don't let others around you rule what you say and do...always keep things polite and professional when communicating.
You will go a long ways in life if you remeber those three simple rules.

I don't know anything about your other posts, what was said, or who replied .... but I will add that I TOTALLY am about leveling. XP is the gratification you get from good adventuring and good RPing. It helps me to think that i'm allowed to RP as someone more experienced than I was a level or two earlier in life. It doesn't mean that I should power play in order to make a multitude of levels superfast so I can RP that i'm superman (and by no means am I saying any is doing this, it's just an example). XP is like winning a game in a tournament while leveling is like getting the trophy. I enjoy seeing people get XP for good RPing as well as watching people hapily go *ding* or //lvl when successfully completing a quest (and I enjoy receiving these things as well). I've never GMed in a computerized gameworld setting, but can say from table top experience as a GM that it is fun to watch people at the end of an adventure feel satisfied from completing the quest, gaining XP, and making lvls. Now just to clarify ... I play to RP and enjoy XP as the reward; I don't RP for the pure fact of trying to gain levels and XP as fast as I can. I'm not sure if what i'm trying to get at is making any sense :)

As for the thread that I mentioned about running ... I hope you'll read all the way thru that and see that things such as proper RPing of a class and race are stated in there as well and the words properly playing a racial tendency/hatred is used. I do not understand without knowing the RPing background/history as to why or how hated races would RP together .... giant and dwarf ... elf and dark elf ... nearly anyone and an orc ... but then again the key here is I don't know how it's been RPed out. This is why I said in my post that it is a generalization not an interpretation of specific examples ie no names were stated. There are definitely reasons why something happen IC that my eyes do not see which is also why I say nothing in the game which might make me look like an idiot (though I do that quite well anyway :) ). I chose to I chose to state my pet peeves as well as things that I do enjoy and asked everyone else to do the ame to help get a feel for the community. So far a lot of good dos and don'ts have been posted and the thread is fun and unoffensive so I sure hope that I haven't offended you from the thread and would apologize up front if I have. Running to catch up with your party is a prime example of me sticking my foot in my mouth if I were to have said something IC ;) and agree that it is one of a multitude of reasons why things happen behind the scenes from my eyes and make me think .... hhhmmmm

As for venting, I used my thread to vent ... by all means use yours :)

Simply put....RP to what you think your character should be doing, not what everyone else thinks.

Of course, there are certain guidelines based on class, race, etc.  But there are quirks in all of us, and we don't fit into neat little boxes.

Ask 100 people what good RP is and you'll get 100 different answers.

The bottom line is you have to play in a way that gives you enjoyment.  This server is about RP, but it's also about fun.

So if you want to be excited about leveling (or IG...learning or growing in your abilities), then do so.  If you want to run everywhere, then do so.  There is no "right" way to RP.  This server has a whole lot of people who range from really, really good RPers to one-dimensional characters, and everyone in between.  Find your place and grow from there.

Thats a bit underhanded there I told you that we as a team are discussing your CDQ and what you want is complicated and needs to be checked with what is on the world already. This takes time and I'm not going to be sorry that I'm not here 24 hours a day. Its either patience or you can choose to not have it run, and frankly with those types of comments I don't feel that excited about running anything.

*raises eyebrows*  Very valid post Pankoki, very valid.
That is the beginning of the post in the Quest area for GM's--where he is talking about your PM and valid points and the team is discussing things.

I am sorry but your comment is indeed unfounded and incorrect.  I will remind everybody again that this is done on a volunteer basis and it is free.  There is only so much the team can do in a 24 hour period/week period/month period.  Simple as that.
If you are going to quote us then quote what we say...not what you think we are saying or what you think we meant to say.

Hey man, it's all you. Run if you need to, don't if you don't. If I see someone RP particularly well, I'll drop em something, whether they want it or not. ;) People post their opinions, but there's really no "rule" on how to RP.
Don't run, it's bad RP. GMs need to hand out xp rewards for good RP. Don't sleep anywhere but a campfire or the Inn... ect... they're all opinions, and are really all up to you as to how you want to approach them.
Now a few things I'd suggest...
            1. Find a higher level character to RP with. (Yes I know it sounds weird, but honestly the higher level characters are there for a reason, usually because they're good RPers and they've been on quests, they'll treat you right)
            2. Go on a few quests. Leanthar's quests are apparently the best, however I'm ashamed to say in my nearly 2 years here, I've yet to go on one of his.
            3. Explore! Craft! Simply mingle with everyone you find! Not every area will be friendly, not every craft will be to your liking, and not every character/player will be "nice" to you... but there is so much out there, that you'll eventually find the people/things that really click for you.
          ZV-
((On the drow thing... I personally would like to see more hatred. Higher ELC. Higher daylight penalties. And possibly even cities that drow aren't allowed in. However the playerbase cannot be "controlled" in that aspect. And some things are just too hard to impliment. :))

I think your over reacting some.  Compared with many of the pw story servers this server is very lenient and none-elitist in its rp style and expectations.   Get the feeling anyone can have fun here, no matter to what standard of realism they live up to in a game world.

Coming from a FR heavy rp server I have trouble understanding how drow/goblins/ogres are even accepted in town let alone approached in a friendly manner by everyone (bar none that ive seen whilst quietly lurking in town).  Here everyone seems accepted, happy happy style.  Its different but not neccessarily better nor worse, taking fun over realism.   I dont mind it either way, but its the same with running, fun  of doing what you want to do sooner over realism of walking and getting bored on a relatively longer trip.  Either way works here.

I agree with this and have to say I noticed that too. When I first join layo back in december/january and created my first Drow, almost everywhere I went I would get threatened or into an "arguement" with someone who would take offence to me being a Drow. Now, even only 6 months later this seems to have died down a little. I don't use Arwinath much, but I have a different Drow character now, very few have seen his face yet, but from wandering around and watching other characters I have to say that Drow in general seem to be a little more "accepted" than they were when I started here.

Of course this is both good and bad, it's bad because, as you said, Drow shouldn't be accepted so easily into society, they should be required to prove themselves to the people around them (as I did with Arwinath, and I'm sure people like Syn'aldur and Tath did back whe they started out). On the other hand, it does get a little frustrating when you keep having the same discussion again with every single person that passes by and sees you have black skin and white hair. Although if I had my choice I would rather have the hostility, and I do miss the feeling of fear and distrust that used to be a lot more obvious.

Or maybe I'm just missing it now?

I think this is the right thread to say this and I hope it answers all your questions.

The world and the time you spend in it is what you make it.  That one value is the base upon which layonara stands.

            What YOU make it.

No one is going to hand you anything on a silver plate that you didn't earn.

I do not mean that in a harsh way merely that you are just starting out. Finding your feet. Layonara is old, it has history and that history has been forged by many that came before and is being forged by the people now.  Everyone's time will come, everyone will have their hero moment.  That is the game. It is about heroes but what you need to remember is everyone else wants to be one too and the GM's are here to help you reach your goals. They are here to help everyone have their moments and have fun.  That means that they are very busy. So be patient, try to be understanding but remain enthusastic.

You'll get your chance, your time. Everyone will.

Some of the best times are never seen by a GM but they are seen by each other.

Remember you are each able to tell a story, so tell them together.

That is what this community is about, at least I think so.

Hlint is major crossroads for adventurers.  And as such, its a place where a lot of creatures are tolerated (think mos eisley.)

Also, a few drow and goblin PCs have either made a name for themselves, or fought beside other influential adventurers that will vouch for them if someone is questioning/threatening/harassing them.  Once word gets out that X great adventurer has vouched for or fought great battles with the PC of questionable race, that character will get harassed a lot less.  This is as it should be, whether the would be harassers respect the great adventurers word or if they merely respect his battle prowess and possible vengance if they acted against the character who they vouched for.

in addition, veteran adventurers often get rather jaded.

"Half-giants in hlint? bah!  Wake me if a Balor walks in."

This attitude is quite ic for some characters.  The chars i've seen most often continually harassing questionable races are Dwarves.  Which is good as dwarves are stubborn, slow to change, and often grew up in all dwarf communities.

Hey, I have a char who hates drow so much that his entire belief system has changed. Yes some of you know why. Poor cole :(

there alot more drow out there now. So it starts to feel like I am griefing them. I feel so guilty (as a player, noy character) that I send a small tell saying "I am not trying to grief, please read cole's dev thread to understand". And I usually get a response like, "it's cool, hey I am drow afterall"

*cole walks off grumpy, rubbing the spider shaped scar on his neck, thinking of past loves*

If Pankoki says he is thinking about it that means he is thinking about it. I don't understand how that can be a negative answer? Give people a little time, please. There are many other players signing up for CDQs, there are the regular quests on the calendar, GMs have player characters themselves, and people have real lives as well, so sit back and have a little patience.
