I have a question that baffles me.

My computer is fairly beefy, from the video card, to the RAM, etc. Yet, it seems when I go through an AT, it loads slower then many other peoples. Even my girlfriends. Her computer is three years old and not near as beefy as mine. (I know cause I built both of them.)

Is there something I am missing? Just curious.

Thanks!

Loading the skyboxes can really take a toll on the time it takes to transfer between areas.  I turn on skyboxes for RP moments and for snapshots, but not when travelling around.  Kind of a shame but it certainly speeds up load time.

Could it be connection, speed and or quality?

How much memory does you system have and what type?

I know people see a HUGE difference in load times when they add Memory.

Is your and her PC running the game at the exact same settings?  If not her PC wich as you say isnt as beefy... might have its quality game settings lowered and that is helping.

Well, I use DDR 400 (PC3200) memory. I have 768 MB of that.

My girlfriend as 768 pf PC100 memory. She also has her skyboxes on at all times and still loads faster then I. We are on the same LAN connection with DSL.

It just baffles me. hehe

Nope. We both use nVidia. Hers is a nVidia MX with 64 DDR. Mine is a brand new nVidia 5500. :D

this might really sound...ummm bad, but maybe the ethernet cables have different quality. One night I realized I was really slow and tried to find out why and eventually changed my cables and boom. back to normal speed. Not sure if that was the problem or not but it was fixed after I changed the cable.

That is a good idea actually Etinfall, and one that is rarely checked. I shall check them and see if that might be the issue. *smiles*

another often overlooked area is the network cards them selves. They tend to slow down as they age or if hers has been upgraded or replaced lately it may be a 1G verses a 10/100. Also if you and her are on hte smae lan, does you hub or router have diffrent speeds or internal wiring. Many have diffrent settings for speed on diffrent ports. and port 1 and the wan port are often wired together.  So if port 1 is used try swaping it to a diffrent port. I am assuming that your computers are close together so distance is pry not the issue but the length of cable can matter also as ethernet signals decay quickly over any real length and even a few dropped packets from this can show as a marked reduction in speed. So if you are using a 100 foot cable and your 5 ft from the hub get a new cable that is shorter. If none of that helps thier are a plethra of other options that are far less common. Such as programs running in the background or Windows config, etc.
