Dyeing on Layo
« on: February 10, 2010, 02:53:16 PM »
It seems to me that people dont die as much these days as they did in days of old on layo (2 years ago or so). I see a lot of PCs getting to epic with less then 5 DTs and all their GPs. So is it easier to stay alive these days or were we just dopey players back in the day? :)

:) You might be right in that its easier to stay alive with Graceful Pleas and such... but believe me, there are still dopey players about *cough cough* ;) well, some of them.

Better grouping, and better understanding of the game? Or just less dopey

Lower server population.
New potions and healing kits.
Graceful Pleas.
All areas are known. This is often forgotten, how often are you going somewhere where no one knows what to expect?  Especially with players playing different characters.

You can dye your clothes at the loom. Though at one point we actually had a dyeing craft, it was pretty crazy. You had to collect materials and stuff for EACH color dye then you'd get the ones that came standard with NWN!

*squints and looks around sheepishly*

Right! I dunno about you but there's lots of people dying and getting soul strands and perming!

With less and less "new areas" it stands to reason the "wow wasnt expecting that" deaths would be down.

The group Enzo was with had a few fall when we tried a new area a couple days ago.

Very good point about the unknown. My PCs got killed a lot exploring new areas. You could say that the current gen is surfing on the SS of the last gen LOL. We took all the risks back in the day. I sure remember going into areas few or none had been and getting a TPK for it LOL.

Yes that was a fun place. First time I had been there, and I had never even heard of it from anyone. I wonder how many people beside the guy who built it, actually knows about it?

Totally agree with the reasons that Orth gave.  I personally think that exploring new areas is one of the most dangerous things a character can do and is probably the biggest reason for the change.  Although there are lots of new areas in the game that I still haven't seen, Trenton doesn't explore as much as he might otherwise due to high loss of SS.

Agreed with Trent and Orth.  Its not just exploring new areas that is bad, but if you try to do it at a rushed pace...its even worse.

But, the changes to the throwable potions was HUGE!  I remember I think that a moderate used to heal maybe 15hps, and now it heals more like 50hps...and that same scale goes up from there for serious, critical and heal potions.

From my point of view, I feel like (talking my feelings here) all the DTs I lost before the better items, better healing, and more unknown areas were a bit unfair in terms of how things are today :(

Oh well at least Wren gets to say "yeah I have been there" when PCs talk about places as if they were legend. even ones higher level and more powerful :) Wren can look at them and say "your breath still smells like milk kid" LOL

I for one saw two new areas to me on Belinara yesterday! WOOT!
And I gained knowledge of a couple more areas conjoined with one of those places, was a blast. Thanks everyone who were in the party yesterday!

Experienced players make a huge difference, as a player that rarely if ever goes anywhere new without a good party, I've seen more of the world due to the likes of Chakar, Aerimor, Sala, Jako, (insert random Angel guild member) Not because we are overly powerful, but because of the teamwork we've established over a couple of rl years..Disclaimer: Aerimor is very powerful, but I think you get my point.  Also, I'm with Pan about the dyeing thing..I used to prefer dark colors but now I'm feeling more of a gold/yellow theme coming on. ;)

I have two more things to add:

1] The practice of "Semi-retirement".   Many PCs that die a lot are only brought out for RP purposes and/or crafting.   Not just old PCs at their 9th SS, but people like Ragnar, who is very new.

It gives the illusion that there is less "death" than there is, but the PC is "dead" so far as any heroic questing is concerned.

2] A form of "natural selection" among players.     Believe me, as a (formerly) new player, I can tell you that the game exceedingly deadly.  And this is not kind to pure roleplayers that Layo advertises itself to.  ( I've had both my subsidiary PCs lose a SS based on things that I knew were risks for them to do, but the PC did not - purely because it was in character for them to take that risk. )   I've also seen a lot of game-engine deaths (invis-bug, crowding-swapping-to-the-front-lines bug, walk-mesh bug, etc.), which are not reimbursed, and that you can avoid only once you truly understand when they tend to happen.    For many players, figuring this out simply isn't fun  - so they leave Layo and go somewhere else.    What is left are the people who know how not to die, and therefore don't.

It gives the illusion that there is less "death" than there is, because the player has simply decided not to play anymore.

Well... I agree...

Chaynce would not have 9 SS losses if it were not because I play him one way. One way only. Protecting the group when things go bad. I know darn well that he's going to die when he does, but... I can't change his basic personality and have him go invis and watch people die. Its the darned Toranite blood in his veins I suppose.

Yep I blame Toran...

So Chaynce will pass on soon, but not necessarily because I ran him into the ground, but rather he did it himself.

However, he has died several time due to either his or others in the parties stupidity. Things that mechanically should not have happened but... there's no GP for them, such as a spawn popping up behind everyone and monsters chasing you down that you had no idea were there. Or the latest one where my son had a familiar that drug a dozen trolls to Chaynce while he was sleeping unarmored... things like that.
