Okay... so maybe not the last one... but the first three!     Some scientists near Geneva made a massive particle accelerator thing that looks like a stargate, which is going to smash protons together with massive amounts of force in an attempt to create tiny black holes that will eventually evaporate. As well as trying to find particles that may turn up a multitude of other dimensions, that will show the three known ones are only a fraction of those that exist.    But what with Murphy's Law and things, the planet'll most likely end up being destroyed. There's a 1 in 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 of the earth being destroyed to be exact.    Full article here:  http://www.nzherald.co.nz/topic/story.cfm?c_id=325&objectid=10400645    Mind Boggling!

There is also the danger of SI... or.. Sudden Inexistence... why by the whole universe fails to exist

Is the following quote relevant?

Of course all calculations and predictions of NOT blowing up are on the Marvel Code of Contingency;  No Matter how well planned out an experiment is, some kind of errant gerbil, spider, space mutant or mad lab assistant will inevitably bring monstrous catastrophe... just because they can.

I saw a science channel show about this a few weeks ago. They showed what would happen if the dice rolled a 1. Heh...was not a pretty sight. :)

They estimate the possibility of accidentally destroying the planet as extremely low.

That's my favorite kind of quote. ;)

I'm generally impressed with the cool things scientists do, but if they manage to destroy Earth with that thing, I'l be really impressed.

For a little while.

Then there would be a great amount anger and frustration if you managed to somehow survive the blast...

Well, while they MIGHT destroy the planet, Sudden Inexistence is somewhat more unlikely... if we go by Carl Sagan's calculations, we've got a few million civilizations that will reach our level in our galaxy alone.  So, odds are, someone's tried this before.  So, since we're all still here, it probably didn't destroy the universe.  The planet, however, is still within the realm of possibility.  Even so, highly unlikely.  Unless we manage to tap the much-debated "vaccuum energy", it's difficult to get impossibly large amounts of energy from small amounts of energy.  It's difficult enough to persuade fusion to behave.

Now, on the other hand, if they cross the streams, we're in real trouble.

While the prospect of having real life "Necromancers" in the form of "Vaccumologists" is intresting.... I don't see them EVER being taken seriously...

"I.. Sir... am a VACCUMOLOGIST!"

hurm I better not do the dicing for them. I hit a one today at a will check against Sonya.. A 1!!! so for the infinitisimal small chance of getting a 1 to do that er I'll pass.

And by the way.. Why are we letting mad scientist play with those kind of toys?? Didnt we learn our lesson already with Hiro and Naga? When the toy exist, someone will be dumb enought to use it even if it means certain death.

hmm, darkstorme's comment got me thinking. Maybe the oft rumoured black hole lying at the centre of the solar system is one of those previously mentioned civilisations that managed to press the big red button when they werent supposed to.

"And now, ladies and gentlemen, the planet of Oopiwoopi will finally be able to travel instantly around the universe! Unrivaled power now lies in our ha - "
"Hey, what does this button do?"
    "BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM!"
