General Discussion / Life is Short
« on: November 04, 2007, 11:39:00 am »
I was woken up to a phone call this morring from my mother.  It was a phone call you never here want to hear.  There was a huge car pile up comming out of Selma on 99.  Caused by a drunk driver (not sure if the fogg was bad but usuall is).  Something like 108 cars.  A child was killed, but a young man was killed also.  This young man was a family friend.

My best friend that usual goes to work on saturdays that travles that same road, he desided to stay home.  I am thankfull for that.

Life is to short.  Bad things happen to good people all the time.  I say no, not this time.  Drinking and driving was the cause.  I begg any of you, if you go out to a party, dinner, or just out with friends and have any drinks at all.  Call a cab, have a sober driver take you home, call someone.

Dont think just becouse I had two or three drinks I am fine to dirve.  I am sorry to tell you, you are not ok to drive.  I am not perfect by anymeans.  I learned the hard way many times over.  This is not the first friend to die becouse of drinking and driving.  I wish it would be the last, but in all reality it wont be.

General Discussion / Teaming and Scheduling
« on: October 16, 2007, 10:53:34 am »
Hey guys,

I've been noticing that there's been high level runs going on through the more difficult areas, but not when and where. Last night, I was invited to one, but otherwise, I've felt a bit left out of the loop. - A bit of a note on that, sorry I couldn't join... 10pm EST is a rough time to make during school days, even if I'm not currently going.

I always thought high level would be something along the lines of grand and fun with more areas to explore and special items to have, but all I've noticed is that my bank account is losing more money than I could ever put into it, and that quests around the times I can manage are all for levels below 17 or 13. Now, I'm not trying to get this into a discussion for low level and high level quests, it's just a brief observation of why high level doesn't feel as grand as I first thought :)

With all that combined, I've been left to running about with lower levels and roleplaying. No complaints on either of those alone, really, I never realized Mistone could be so fun...Yet, you know, I've kind of wanted to check out East with different folks now and then.

I always thought that the "clique" attitude was mentioned constantly because of certain people or the deal, whatever, but I'm more along the lines beginning to believe that it's because people who ARE left out of the loop don't know how to join. By the time you realize there's a group out in East, they're way too far for you to go with them.

And then you're left back in West sitting around in Hempstead...

So, just as a suggestion, but why can't we have more forum based posts inviting people to East, Central, even West runs? Stick more into the calendar so those who have trouble getting into that stuff due to schedule problems, not OOC'ing with the proper people enough, etc can join. Set aside some time so it's not ungodly late all the time and then launch people through mass destruction of the lands combined with beautiful roleplay.

It would be fun for all of us to have some newer people, after all...

Curious to hear your thoughts,
Christine

General Discussion / The Puppy Dog and the Snake are teaming up..

... to bring you Thursday Night Quests!

In a move inspired by Dezza and Pseudonym's brilliant One-Shot Sunday/Monday Quests, the twisted and devious minds of Kahi and Ouroboros will be presenting one-shots on Thursday Nights.  (Due to time constraints, Kahi's quests will begin anywhere from two to two and a half hours later than mine.)

The first quest is this Thursday, the eighteenth, at 8PM.  (I know, two quests in one week, what am I, nuts?!?)

Ciao!

Roleplaying / Looting Etiquette
« on: August 30, 2007, 07:33:45 am »
Yeah, this seems like a weird thing to post on Layonara, I feel like I’m three seconds away from saying “Roll Greed on Green unless you need it then take it, and pass on all special Bind on Pickup Blues so we can discuss who needs it most”. Funnily enough, that’s really close to what I want to say:

1)Designate one looter: Since NWN Has no way of making loot go right into the bag of a master looter, or in a round robin fashion, its probably best to just designate one person to do it, and hope they are good at math and have a lot of weight reduction bags and/or can carry a lot.

  2) Don’t Leave the Looter Behind: They are doing a service to YOU , the rest of the party, and therefore it’s not really nice to leave them behind. They could have a really bad directional sense, get ambushed by a spawn, or simply loose out on the XP The rest of the party receives while going forward. It won’t slow you down that much to wait for the looter.

  3) Save Discussing Loot for the End: And pay attention to the task(s) at hand

  4) Need Before Greed: When rolling, if someone or more than one person needs the item more than you do, I think it is only fair to let them roll for it. Of course, it may not be in your character’s nature but sometimes this can impend on the fun of others. If no one needs it , feel free to roll for it.

  5) Do Not Roll To Sell!: Don’t roll on an item just to sell it unless no one , even in the slightest, needs it or could put it to better use. It does a disservice to the rest of the party to just turn around and sell something someone else was going to use. If you do plan on selling it if no one needed the item, make your intentions clear and discuss it with your party. Sometimes its only right for the gold from the sale to be divided and sometimes its just the luck of the role..

~That’s really All I had to say. Thanks.

General Discussion / Ideas from other PW servers
« on: August 24, 2007, 12:39:48 am »
Since NWN Layo is going away, these are probably moot points but I still think they're worth considering for the next generation too.

Hourly XP
I truly found "hourly" XP to be quite liberating.  It wasn't major, but a slow trickle of XP let me mix RP with adventure in a nice balance.  With hourly XP I felt that my time on the server was valuable whether I was bashing or sipping whisky with a fellow dwarf.

On Layo I would say that 1/4 of a quest hours worth of XP per RL hour would not unbalance things.  (If it takes 40 hours of quest XP to level, then it would take 160 hours of playtime to level.)

I am aware that the general opinion of the remaining Layo players is that XP should be "earned" through quests and combat.  However, I still am a firm believer in "story over combat."  A player that RPs for four hours entirely through emotes is not less deservant than a basher that soloed a bunch of giants.  Call me crazy but I'd rather get hourly XP at the combat academy than mindlessly bashing across a continent.

Crafting
I made a post describing a different level progression in CNR.  I really liked the crafting level tied with character level, but I was never big into crafting so I'm  probably biased.

There have been discussions here about naming items.  One of the systems I saw automatically did this by naming CNRed items like this:  "Bronze Shortsword [Bumblebee]".  No exploits possible, just the crafter's name automatically added.

Death
Corpses are fun!  To fit it into Layo's style, I would say drop a corpse that someone could pick up.  It would be like moving the gravestone.  Obviously a very complicated system that would need to be spec'ed out to avoid exploits.

Please don't take this as a "rant."  Consider it information gleaned from other experiences.  I chose to return to playing on Layo knowing fully that my primary PC would likely never gain another level, never become a WL, and certainly never have more of an impact than he already does.  Layonara is a fun world, with fun people, and with a fun future that I want to participate in just as it is.

I would also like to say that the community here as represented on the forums is far more mature than elsewhere.  I am paraphrasing Leanthar here but he once said something like, "I would rather have a server of ten exceptional RPers enjoying themselves, than a server of sixty hack & slashers."  That is absolutely correct.  Massive player numbers only increase the possibility of immaturity.  All of you players, past and present, deserve a pat on the back.

I just wanted to thank the team for the continuing efforts at keeping things fun for everyone.  The new GMs are great and I can't wait for the next update for cool new places to explore.  I would also like to thank the players that continue to make things fun and exciting.  Well anyway keep up the good work everyone.  :)
