General Discussion / Rasterick/GM Oggie will be away for a while.
« on: July 05, 2006, 09:03:39 am »
Folks; I have some RL stuff that needs taking care of, and this will severly curtail my in-game time; both as a player and as a GM. I will be back hopefully in a couple of months, and maybe once in a while if I get the time.  I will be keeping an eye on the forums etc.

Have fun and see you all soon.[/red]

For any that are interested, I am setting up a rugby club for kids in my local area, and it involves quite a lot of effort. It has always been a big ambition of mine, and now the chance has arisen, I will do my best to get it working.

Every day, I see a new post on the forums (and Im not looking to rain on anyones parade here) about how much people are looking foward to NWN2, how they cant wait to have Layonara represented as  PW in it, and all the expectations that go with it.   It is always nice to look forward to something, and I have noticed that new games always generate a great deal of pre-release fervour. Expectations are high, and we all hope that this will live up to its much publicised hype.   However, I have to say this. I love Layonara the way it is now:
 • It runs on a relatively low spec'd PC.
 • It is entralling and exicting.
 • Well put together, and dynamic.
 • Has some great people behind the scenes.
 • Lots of other stuff, that Im sure I dont have to tell you about, as you all know.
So lets look forward to Layonara on NWN2, but spare a thought and think how lucky we all are to have found this great place.  Oh yeah!.. when is NWN2 being released? ;)

Rumour Has It / Long are the shadows of sorrow
« on: June 05, 2006, 02:15:13 pm »
A tear is shed but no one sees
Life crawls by unheard
No pain can compare
But no one cares
Long are the shadows of sorrow

Who will hear my cries now??

Wild Surge Inn / Operation Smalltalk - Intelligence report
« on: March 13, 2006, 10:46:11 am »
A travelling alchemist reported a very tense atmosphere on the Isle of Veapra. He had just returned from a herb cataloguing expedition and felt he should report  the unrest to the Port Valensk Authorities.

He stated that following the discovery of murdered Wemic, several of the prides were becoming very unsettled, as they believed that their pride brothers demise was the work of man. Long they have tolerated the incursions of the two legged people, and have not felt threatened by their visits. They are looking to take matters into their own hand unless the killer is made known to them.

The alchemist said that wemic specialist had spoken to him in the Veapra jetty area, and was waiting there for a team of investigators to arrive.

General Discussion / Well Done
« on: March 11, 2006, 02:02:44 am »
I often see players congratulating GMs for particular quests. I intend to reverse that; I would like to congratulate those players that partook of the 'Murder Most Foul' quest last night. Often GMs are percieved as being there soley for the fun of the players, but we need to enjoy what we do as well, otherwise what would we do it for?

You guys were fun, you RP'd well, and made it a enjoyable short quest. Playing your characters well, and adding special little touches and ideas throughout, makes it all the richer for other players (and GMs).

I just hope I am never in a hostage situation with you guys as the negotiators  :) Some half crazed half giant trying to bash the door down with a pick axe, a dwarf tring to scale a wall and a rogue and dwarf having a heated argument about something or other....I reckon the captive would sooner take her chances with the captor than be rescued.
I dont remember seeing that in any film ... But fun all the same.

Well done people.

LORE Ideas, Suggestions and Requests / Layonara RSS Feed
« on: March 03, 2006, 06:18:42 am »
How easy would it be for Layonara to have its own RSS feed? ( http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2002/12/18/dive-into-xml.html ). This could take the form of Selected items of news from the forums, Daily quests available or even new articles posted on the forum.

General Discussion / Covert Operations - Recruitment Day
« on: February 09, 2006, 07:09:18 am »
The list of victims.. er, sorry ;) volunteers is filling up nicely. I am looking forward to meeting you all. I deliberately left off level and number requirements, the quest will naturally deal with that as we progress.  With the potentially large number of people in one area, please be patient, things may not be as quick as you may wish.   I would like to make a few requests before we actually start tommorow.
When talking in party mode, please be aware that I will have a lot of text scrolling in front of my four eyes. 8-). So if I dont answer you straight away, Im not ignoring you, just working my way there.
As we progress, I will hope to appoint leaders, or they may even float to the surface themselves. So please use them as a a funnel for communication. (NPCs etc)
The danger will increase exponentially  as the series progresses, the whole quest will be about teamwork, so please look after your fellows.
You may be asked to take your character to new levels of danger, this is the test of your metal.
If you fail in any stage (and that will be made clear to you when we start) it is done soley on the merits of your character and their performance, it isnt personal.
The whole thing is hopefully about character, and as such, levels will have no bearing here.
Game mechanics can be the bain of good role play, if I request you disable your minimap, and ignore the character portraits location, I do so to attempt to add realism. Pretend you dont know where you are. :)
So as not to burn everyone out (especially me), the first installment will last 2 hours, be prompt please on arriving.

Ask A Gamemaster / Oggie
« on: December 15, 2005, 05:57:00 am »
DM Name: Oggie

The name Oggie is a nickname for a famous Cornish Delicacy called a Cornish Pasty , it used to be the staple diet of Cornish Tin Miners. As the thick pastry crust could be used to hold it while eating, then discarded so as to avoid injesting arsenic that was on their fingers. Why this name? you ask, well; when I first logged on as a GM, I had to think of a name, and as we were having Cornish Pasties for Dinner, the choice was obvious, well it was to me.

Forum Name: Rasterick

About Me:

I have many interests, Layonara being one of my favourite ones; but I must admit to being a fanatic follower of the gentlemany art of rugby, as a player, a coach for a juniors team and an avid supporter of England and Liecester Tigers. I also enjoy making furniture, as a hobby, and sadly, not an occupation. I work as an IT Consultant and Software developer, prior to this, I spent many years as a Engineer on Submarines in the Royal Navy, so water holds no fear or suprises for me.  ;) Long periods away from home developed my interest in gamiing and my passion for fantasy novels.

I am a father of four children, aged 10, 7 and twins of 5. So beware, they can all use a PC, and  are not afraid of hideous creatues, and are particulay fond of large groups of beasts. So if during quests you see very peculiar actions by NPCs, and see them speaking in strange dialects, you know whats happened.  :o

I have been on some great quests, both scheduled and impromptu, and must admit to enjoying the impromptu ones the most. So guess what? I hope to be able to spring stuff on people, spice up their lives in Layonara and get them to react, adapt and get thinking. No longer will a simple trip to the bank be the same, you never know who you may meet.

Dont be afraid, but be prepared, this is a potentially dangerous world. Dangers lurk round every corner. Hlint has a population of 2000, so expect to see of the populace from time to time. Not all of them are as savoury as you would like to think. All is not what it seems.

In terms of quests, I like things that are out of the ordinary, mystery and Intrigue will feature highly, as will seemingly quite ordinary characters and scenarios (but not always), simple beginings can soon take a turn to become something much more inolved, sinister and dangerous. You will need sound tactics and strategy, analytical skills and most of all a sence of humour, (A man who can laugh in the face of danger is either very brave, or completely mad), so be prepared for a comical twist. I dont give up information easily, so if you need find something out, the direct approach will not always work, and it will not always reveal the truth.

So much potential exists in Layonara; so I hope to tap into some unexplored and uncharted facets, that I hope will get you to RP until your keyboard melts.

I hope to create some fun stuff for you, and never forget, if your character ends up dead, imprisoned or turned into a bat. It aint personal...

Pete AKA Oggie.

General Discussion / To our Fallen Comrades
« on: November 30, 2005, 06:35:00 am »
I often read peoples character development threads; and notice a worrying trend developing. It may just be be me getting paranoid, but there seems to be a plethora of permenant deaths recently.

This may be viewed as morbid, but out of nothing more than curiousity. How many of you good folks have gone on the long walk, shuffled off your mortal coils, curled up your toes etc etc.. and died a permanent death.?  :(

An even more morbid question, how many of you are so close (1 or 2 DTs away from dying) to it that, you even avoid the ravens to the West of Hlint,  for fear of ending up a permanent guest of the Soul Mother.

General Discussion / Have not been around much recently
« on: November 08, 2005, 06:27:00 am »
Hi everyone.   As some may have noticed (I wont be offended if you say you havn't :(), I have not been around much in the last few weeks. I have logged on a couple of times for an hour or so, but not as much as I used to do.   I have not left or drifted away, or been abducted by aliens, or gone to play The World of Warcraft'.  I have been very busy with my other hobby; I coach, manage and play in a mens rugby team, as well as help coach my sons rugby team. It has taken up a lot of my time. Time I would have probably used to be playing in Layonara. It has been quite a wrench to stop myself from logging on, and would be unfair to the rest of my family if I did so as much as I used to, as I am committed to other things.   Hopefully things will settle down, and I will be able to meet up with you guys again soon. Until then I will hope to snatch the odd hour in game whenever I can. Until then, to quote the words of the Governor of California (albeit in his other guise as an actor):   "I'll be back!"
