Introduce Yourself / Jumping on the bandwagon
« on: March 17, 2007, 05:54:37 pm »
So who am I?

My name is David (how exciting!), I'm 20, and I live in the southwest of England where the fields are eternal and farmer's accents dominate the populace.

I'm an aspiring horror writer and musician (read: layabout). I play Guitar, keyboards, bass, vocals, and like to dabble in orchestrations. I am in a couple projects, but won't shamelessly plug here. I also have qualifications in music technology, sound engineering, as well as copy-editing and proofreading.

I'm fairly (completely) horror obsessed.

As for gaming...well, i can't remember where it started. RPGs always seemed to be something that were there. I come from the legion of tabletop gamers woo, which I played from the ages of 8-16, religiously. As for online gaming, I played EQ for a brief period before deciding I hate it, then shortly after I found my way here, to Layo, where I have remained pretty much ever since (with a break last year when my 'net went down for months). It's my first PW, and I have no plans to leave. I have learnt a lot in my two years here, I hope that will continue.

That's about it really.

Oh, and I look like this, but less red (and with more beard now):

General Discussion / Character Re-submission
« on: March 01, 2007, 12:26:17 pm »
This might be covered in the rules somewhere, but if it is I haven't found it. So...

Quite some time ago (I think about a year and a half) I submitted a character who was subsequently approved and I played him for s short while. Then I deleted him, I don't know why but it seemed the best idea at the time.

What I'm wondering, is if I could possibly resubmit this character via the normal procedure, and then start him from afresh as any other new character, Or would it be better to do a new submission entirely, but along the same lines?

Given that his lifespan in his previous form was fleeting and of no significance I don't think it would cause any confusion, because there was next-to-no character interaction. I quite like the backstory in question, which is why I am wondering if this is possible rather than writing a new one with a similar goal.

General Discussion / The Return
« on: December 24, 2006, 05:39:23 pm »
Hello everyone.

Some of you will remember me, others won't. I left here sometime around the end of June because of a faulty internet connection which went on until near September. Since then I've been working hard towards becoming a professional writer and found that I couldn't concentrate on that and good RP at the same time. I'm now 4 novelettes, several short stories and half a novel done, and I'm slowly making a return to this place.

Anyway, enough of that. The real point of this post, is just to clear up a couple of things. I've been milling around here for the last few days, and I've been in game doing a bit of crafting and meeting new people, etc, but I notice that my character (Kurgaz Ulfson) no longer has a Lore page (unless you query him) and doesn't appear in any of the top tradeskill lists (weaponsmithing in particular as he's level 13). So I'm just wondering if there is any reason for this, and if there's anything I can do to rectify it.

Thanks in advance.

Oh, and Merry Christmas ;)

Edit: I should probably note that I have two other characters who are both listed in the Lore pages still.

General Discussion / *sigh* and an apology
« on: June 25, 2006, 04:00:28 pm »
So there I was, three hours in to the finale "In Defense quest", thoroughly enjoying myself and feeling slightly useful when *BANG*  my broadband modem decides to pack in for no reason whatsoever, and also decides not to work again until about half an hour ago (which is about 22hours since it stopped to begin with).

So yes, despite being more than a little annoyed, I thought I would make a post here to say sorry to all the players and the GMs involved in that quest (especially to Varka, Eight_bit, and all the others in my group) for my unannounced departure from the quest, there really was nothing I could do either way.

I'm not sure if my leaving really had any detriment on the quest itself, but the fact that the pleasure (and also the XP and lovely quest items ;) ) were brutally stolen from me by the force of nature has caused me to sigh. After all the anticipation as well!

Ugh!

...but I'll be back in a few days. I'm flying over to Norway for a festival over the weekend, so for anyone who needs to see me IG - that's why I'm not on this week.

Also, I've never flown before, so any friendly reassurance before I go will be greatly received ;)

See you all when I get back :)

General Discussion / Quick ECL thing
« on: April 06, 2006, 01:11:44 pm »
I just wanted to double check something to do with the ECL of Drow subrace characters. I spoke to Meizter about this the other day and he suggested posting it here.

I noticed a ocuple days ago whilst in a group doing the Haven mines quest that I was getting 73XP for an ogre berzerker. Now, my character is level 5, so that should give him the XP of a level 7 if im correct, but as far as I can remember I was getting more than that when my other character (Kurgaz - Dwarf) was at level 9/10

I've had two Drow characters before, and I never remembered it being so difficult to level them (not that this is my main priority, it isn't) but I wanted to check if:

1 - the system has changed
2 - im suffering a bug of some kind
3 - its all in my imagination

thanks :)

General Discussion / A time question, and tomorrow's Huginn quest
« on: March 25, 2006, 11:52:38 am »
I just wanted to clear something up that I've been wondering about today.

The time for the Deadly Fascination quest tomorrow is 1pm GMT (which I assume goes by the sever clock?) but what im wondering is if this accounts for the UK time change tonight. I have no idea why we do it, but tonight (2am) the clocks get put forward by an hour, so do I get up at 1pm then, or as 1pm is today (which will be 2pm tomorrow).

Sorry if that was confusing, im not sure how to explain that really, but im sure some of the other uk players will understand what im talking about ;)

Roleplaying / Alignment vs Moral values
« on: February 07, 2006, 04:20:22 pm »
This thread is mainly about something which has come up a few times now, usually on GM quests rather than every day RP, and the times it has I've never been sure what the best way to handle it was.The most recent being on Muninn's quest earlier when I had my "momentary alignment slip"

so here's the situation: Kurgaz is a Lawful good Dwarven Defender, and in general he acts like a paladin, despite having never taken a "paladin" oath, he does his best to help everyone in need aslong as they have a positive reason, he will not involve himself in anything that is going to harm anybody that he considers law-abiding or innocent. At the same time, he has a strong moral value towards his heritage, he believes that no kin can do any wrong, and that if they do it is likely that they were tricked or forced into doing it, he also has a large amount of respect for the memory of fallen Dwarves (which all ties into his background).

So what happens then, when someone runs down Dwarves in his presence? This happened on the quest earlier, to begin with he just made "grumbling" and "frowning" reactions, but eventually it seemed almost like a constant anti-Dwarf rant, and Kurgaz being Kurgaz, he couldn't simply let this go by. The same happens when people summon undead in his presence, which he doesn't like and will almost always question.

The problem im having, is how to deal with this/similar situations without dropping alignment. As all the times anything like this happens, the person is question has never stopped after his "warning" them about showing more respect. Obviously as a LG he can't threaten them outright, but at the same time it wouldn't be characteristic of him to just let said offences pass without reaction.

Any suggestions much appreciated. Sorry if this turned into a long-winded post :)

General Discussion / Character problem
« on: October 20, 2005, 12:28:00 pm »
This may be the wrong place to post this, but I need some DM help.

I've just logged in for the first time with my new character (Arwinath Dy'nesifer), which is a remake of an old one, but the problem is, it is still recognising me as the old one. I put the name in the same as it was before, assuming that it wouldn't be a problem as he was deleted months ago. I am at level 1 with 0XP, but the journal still contains all the completed quests that I had done when I played him the first time around.

What is the best solution to this problem?

General Discussion / Rules for bringing back old characters
« on: September 19, 2005, 03:22:00 pm »
I was just wondering if there were any rules regarding this? I was thinking about bringing back my original Layo character (Arwinath Dy'nesifer) but I was wondering how I could do it. What I mean by that is that the build would probably be different this time (Rogue/Fighter instead of ranger/rogue for example) but apart from that he would be the same character he was before, so could I just re-submit the original bio with modifications to account for the class change, or would I have to write an entirely new one?

Also, would it be allowed to bring him back and pick up where I left off? I dont mean rebuild him or anything, but personality-wise. I would RP as him going "home" or something similar (To the underdark, as hes a Drow) but surely he would still remember everything that happened up until the point he disappeared originally, rather than having to return as a complete stranger to the land.

Sorry if this was posted somewhere before and I missed it.

General Discussion / error on server status?
« on: September 12, 2005, 10:18:00 am »
I don't know if this is a bug or something but I just noticed something I thought was odd whilst checking the server status page.

It lists a player name "Orcspawn3" as being online as two different characters - Xiao Lin and Hargrannar Craggenhilt, but it says they are both level 1 half-orcs, which many of us know they aren't.

Anybody know what that is about? :o

General Discussion / How many Dwarves...
« on: August 22, 2005, 03:03:00 pm »
This is a question that came up a while ago at the end of a quest involving mainly Dwarves, when I asked if anybody knew how many Dwarves there were on the server, the DM (mixafix) said that "they" used to keep record of the amounts of each race currently active on the server, and suggested I put a post here and....well I completely forgot about it until now.

So here it is: does anybody know, approximately, how many Dwarf PCs there are on layonara?

If it's as simple as a list I think it would be quite interesting to see how many PCs there are of each race on Layo so that we can compare.

thanks :)

General Discussion / Just a thought....
« on: July 13, 2005, 10:49:00 am »
This isn't related to layo in anyway, but I thought I'd start this topic here anyway, just so we can make people think a bit more about what they are doing in real life.

Today I was involved in a serious car crash on the M5 motorway in england. A car hit us in the back whilst changing lanes because he was moving too fast, and couldn't stop in time when a lorry in front of us slowed down, causing us to do the same.

The impact of the hit sent our car spinning (literally) across the lane of the motorway and into a ditch in a field nearby, the windscreen and dashboard were wrecked, the entire back half of the car completely obliterated, and the entire framework buckled so we had to climb out the window.

There were three of us in the car at the time of the accident, luckily none of us were harmed, and for that were are truly lucky considering the damage done our vehicle. It was noted that my friend sat behind me in the rear left passenger seat would have had a 0% chance of survival if he had been sat on the right where the car was hit worst.

THe police evaluated the situation and deemed it to be entirely the responsibility of the other driver, who came away relatively unscathed with some damaged to his work van.

I'm just posting this here to make people aware of these dangers, and to urge people to take more care, both on the roads, and in other situations which may have effects on people. Concentrate on what you are doing, things that seem trivial are not always so, and a lack of attention could very well cost people their lives.

What makes it worse is that it happened the day after my 19th birthday...

thanks :)

Development Journals and Discussion / The Trials of Kurgaz Ulfson
« on: May 15, 2005, 01:20:00 pm »
It has not been long since I left my stronghold. I had been travelling for a few days trying to track down the orc tribe responsible for the death of Thurgil. The night had fallen and I took a quick rest behind some rocks near a river, when I awoke I found myself standing before a Dragon! Me and the dragon exchanged a few words and he directed me towards a town named Hlint.

Somewhere along the way I lost most of my equipment, so I had to start by purchasing a new axe! I needed to sort myself out now, and the first thing I needed to do was raise some money for a new armour of some kind, fortunately there are many people in this town who needed help, so of course I had to lend them my hand.  I’ve done a few tasks for people today, I killed a wererat in the sewer on the request of a young woman, and one of the guard masters employed me to take care of some Goblins outside of the town, I did this as quickly as I could, killing a whole tribe of them single handed!

Later in the day I was making a trip into the local crypts to rid it of those vile undead creatures that dwell there, when I met a kinsman! He told me his name was Murin. He and I fought well together, he is a good fighter like myself. We quickly cleansed the crypt of the evil that was there and returned to the inn. We agreed to meet up again for an Ale. It was nice to battle beside a fellow Dwarf again and I have no doubt that we will become close friends, although  I will never try to replace Thurgil.

General Discussion / Deities and temples
« on: May 05, 2005, 07:36:00 am »
Just a quick question really, also inspired by the enchanting pools debate.

I admit, I haven't seen a vast area of the world, but I was just wondering how many of the deities have temples in and around layonara, and how many of them were just described in the handbook for detail?.
