Wild Surge Inn / Orienteering: New Player Welcome Event
« on: May 26, 2007, 05:18:05 pm »
A dusty gnome walks into the Scamp in Port Hempstead, a distracted look on his face. He climbs up onto a stool, deftly pulls a map out of one of the many cases tied to his pack, and begins to examine it. A slight mutter can be heard as he measures some things on the map with his fingers.

The low rumble of gnomish coming from his mouth is suddenly punctuated by a wide eyed shout, "Dryd ruma ec silr mynkan dryh E aqbaldat, yht silr taaban!!" Almost frantically, Efficace pulls a fresh sheet of paper from one of his numerous bags and begins to write on it. He writes for a moment, stops, then writes again. He then grimaces and writes a third time. Once the writing is complete, the gnome pops from his stool, walks to the message board, and posts the paper at eye level for a gnome. The paper appears to contain the same message three times, first in Gnomish, then Dwarvish, and finally Common. The Common version reads as follows:

Diggers Wanted

Efficace Brown, the Gnomesapper, needs people who can dig. I have a big digginjob. I cannot pay much of the Truecoins, but you will get to see digging done the very best way, the Gnomish way. Yah. So bring your shovels for the holediggin.

The bottom of the note contains instuctions when to meet at the Stormcrest Shack if you are interested in joining the work party.

// Tuesday, May 29th, 7:30 PM Pacific, 10:30 Eastern, 0230 GMT (Wednesday morning), Stormcrest Shack

Calendar Link

// For this event to meet its objectives, the following ground rules are necessary.
// Base your decision to participate with the correct expectations in mind:
Levels 1-6 only please
Party Size Limit: 6 Max (Probably won't be a problem, but too many people can ruin these things)
No running (except from monsters)
There will be a "mandatory role-play period" at the beginning and during at least one "campfire intermission"
Please arrive with arrows/bolts, food, water, potions, flint, tinder or whatever you need to last the trip
The goal is for everyone to survive the outing, so patience, restraint, and caution will be necessary
The "bashiness" rating will depend on who shows up and other 'special' factors, but will probably be very low

This IS:
 • A chance to see a little more of Mistone and learn how to move safely between Hempstead/Vehl and the wide, wide world
 • A chance to pick up (but not complete) about 5 NPC quests
 • A chance to learn the Player Map System
 • An opportunity to ask in-character questions about world events and locations, NPC quests, where to find CNR, whatever
 • A good place to ask in-character those questions people on the forums tell you to "ask someone in-game"
 • A great time to trade crafting items and resources with people who can't use items better than the ones you can make
 • A setting in which to meet people to go adventuring with later
 • An acceptable time to use OOC tells to ask questions about the more frustrating aspects of the game's mechanics (eg I just can't get my character to fish! )

This is NOT:
 • A GM run event
 • Run by a player with extensive knowledge of many in-game happenings (I learn at each of these, just like everyone else)
 • An opportunity to "kite" or "draft" behind a high level tank character, soaking up XPs for fast leveling
 • A chance to quickly group up and go 'hunting/bashing'

General Discussion / Festivals
« on: May 21, 2007, 02:40:40 pm »
Pen N Popper's thread about spicing things up [thread=116347]over here[/thread] got me thinking about something.

What did nobility in the real Middle Ages do when they got bored?
Declared a holiday!

The Handbook is full of holidays for races and deities. Goran's "Day of Fixing," Lucinda's "Hosting of the Weave" (though maybe not the Night of Flesh and Magic, ahem.), Prunilla's Planting and Harvest Days, and many more. The new Handbook probably has an even more extensive list.

So let's declare some of these in a way that players know when they occur and watch what happens.

There are time dialation problems, of course, since the "annual" holiday would come around just about every RL month or so and last just a few RL hours. It probably wouldn't line up with the Layo calendar for the holiday, either. But let's just ignore that and have a given festival last a real life week and only celebrate any given holiday once a real life year or whatever makes sense.

It would give people something new to discuss. It would give followers of certain deities, home towns, races, etc a change to role play something different. It would give people a reason to go buy new clothes or to stock up on pie. If something went wrong, you could explain it on account of it being the Black Sun's Day of Darkness (as an cheesy example-- not a real thing as far as I know). All kinds of superstitions could be roleplayed.

I think if we got organized and calendared some of these holidays, people would respond with player run events around the themes (a pilgrimage, a party, a Voraxian axe sharpening festival, ...) to flesh out the events.

Is there a list of holidays already compiled somewhere by the Writing Team? Is there some reason we can't just take the forum calendar and throw some of these existing feast days onto it and watch what ensues?

Comprehend Languages would be cool. Some would argue that it makes a simple spell equal to weeks of work to earn a language ear, but I think it could be limited such that it would be acceptable. For starters, the caster can't speak the language, only understand it.

However, I understand that the language system is driven through listener code that's outside NWN, is hard to write, harder to debug, and seems to flake out for no reason from time to time. As such, it might be too much effort for too little payback.

4
Another repost in the spirit of "one spell per thread"...  How about a refinement to Divine Relation to make it work as an area of effect, perhaps giving more information (like the actual deity) depending on the caster level or something? Or maybe just change the 2da entry so the range is longer and the vfx more subtle. It's one of my favorites but I don't use it as much as I'd like because it tends to make characters and players mad as it is. Too many times I've had a character ask whether I've just "checked them out" since I "must think they're evil" which isn't what the spell does and would not be something they'd know anyway.  There are a lot of opinions on this one, so I'll understand if it is not changed.  See this post for some thoughts.

5
Per Ed's sensible request, this is being duplicated from another thread.

How about the Detect Good/Evil/Chaos/Law family of spells? And Undetectable Alignment to balance things.

I think these could work almost exactly as written in the PH (perhaps with some duration adjustments or whatever) and give some good role play opportunities as the world's alignments become more diverse.

6
From the many threads like this one and those cited in it, two things are clear to me. First, that people who get experience from bashing don't want a limit on that. And second, those that don't get experience from role playing wish they did. Talan Va'lash had a brilliant post in the above mentioned thread which I will quote, in part, here.
Quote
I do not think any additional systems for -limiting- attainable xp/time ratios are necessary at this time (regardless of whether its game time or RL time.)   However, I -do- think that a way to reward non-bashing playstyles is neccessary. I think the system that I summarized briefly in PnP's thread (chongo linked to it above so I'll refrain from doing so again) is a good way to do this, as it does not allow the timed xp system and the bashing xp system to "stack" as it were.   Not having a system like this, I've seen, over the years, the people that get frusterated and leave about the leveling issue are some of the best RPers and often those that don't care to spend their game time in a way that may minimize their RP time even if they want to gain levels and that is the only way. Ironically, this is the play style that is supposed to be the goal of Layonara, insomuch as to say that RP is valued higher than xp for xp's sake.
From this, I conclude the obvious: We need a system to reward role play with experience points.   Actually, I think we need several methods to reward role play. GM's giving out RP XP is one part of the solution. I then set out to design another such a system and came up with these criteria:
• Must be fair -- available to everyone, uniformly applied, no sense of favoritism
 • Must not cause system lag
 • Must not be overly burdensome to GM team
 • Must not be exploitable
So, without further delay, my proposal.  Role Play Experience Points for Running Player Events  I propose that players who run role play events should be given experience points for running them. What constitues a "role play event?" An event which:
• is scheduled on the player calendar at least 3 days in advance
 • is open to all players who meet the published criteria (Toranites, undead hunters, rogues, halflings, characters under level 10, characters over level 15, whatever it may be for that event)
 • lasts at least one real life hour
 • has a higher purpose than just "we'll get together and kill stuff"
 • does not involve the completion of NPC quests
 • is attended by at least 2 people other than the organizer
 • is given prior approval by the Role Play Events Approver
 • has a log submitted to the Role Play Events Approver once the event is over
 • has a sign-off from one attendee
Note that players who attend don't get experience points, just the organizer. This is like a CDQ -- no XP for those who attend, only the main person is rewarded. This could merit some discussion.  The advanced notice is to help people plan, and also to allow for GM's to be present if they choose (as NPCs or as invisible observers). However, no GM work is ever required with this system (except to give out the XP long after everything is over. This is just whatever GM is on when the player asks to "cash in" his or her XP. I can't think of a way around this...)  To get approval, the organizer sends a brief message (via forum PM) to the Role Play Events Approver in advance. It contains a brief summary of what you plan on doing. Something like, "I want to hold a chapel session for followers of Az'atta, where we will strengthen each other's faith." If it sounds straightforward, the approval will be given. If it sounds absurd, it will be rejected. The event can still be held, but no XP will be given. If it sounds like it might stray from canon or Layonara lore, then a more complete summary can be sent on to the appropriate staff member to look over before approval or denial.  The reason for at least two people is just so that these events aren't too exclusive. Also, it means that the organizer is motivated to get out there and advertise the event, increasing the immersiveness of the world.  Logs are submitted so that, should there be any question, they can be reviewed. They are easier to submit than an extensive write up of what happened and they provide some proof that the event happened as advertised. If the Role Play Events Approver wants to read every word, it's there. I imagine a quick skim is more than adequate in most cases.  The "sign-off" is a three sentence message saying something like "Yeah, I went to Joe's Fallen Paladin Therapy Session, and it was a lot of fun. I didn't know there were so many of us. Those &*#*^@ no-good Xeenites! Joe did a good job. I especially liked it when he ..." Not a big deal. If it takes more than 3 minutes you're not doing it right. The sign-offs could be posted on a public forum so that others could see what they missed and decide if they want to attend the next one -- or plan something better themselves.  Some additional rules might include limiting how many of these events a player can run per month.  The Role Play Events Approver could be a new position much like character approver. Since this person would never need to have GM access to the game, the training required is much lower. And since all work is done through PMs on the forums, there would never be a need for the requester and the approver to both be connected (or even awake) at the same time. The total work load for this position could be between 0 and 3 hours per month -- again, on the order of what a character approver puts in.  The beauty of this system is that it encourages everyone to think, "What would my character really be doing? Helping the sick? Studying spells? Performing bard songs in taverns? Training with weapons?" Whatever the answer is could be an event, and it could generate experience points. It would be possible to level just by teaching people monk meditation. Or the virtues of Our Lady of the Weave. Whatever. While the XP wouldn't be much, it could keep you moving forward.  I suggest the XP reward be set at something near what would be given for attending a GM quest for a like amount of time. Perhaps a little more or a little less. That's a balancing issue I'll leave to the pros. The XP alone wouldn't be worth all the time that would have to go into something like an event. But the RP is its own reward. The XP are just icing on the cake. The return on investment here is slim -- just getting in game and killing stuff would yield XP much faster. But it would give something to people who currently don't get anything due to their style of play. And it would create a more immersive world by encouraging groups of people seriously to role play their characters.  Obvious events would include running Storyteller's Night or an opening at the Arms with some guest performer or lecturer. Player runs quests, which can be done now using the tools like the Player Quest NPC and the treasure map system would probably qualify. "Let's cleanse the Dire Woods" probably would not -- unless the organizer added a layer on top of that somehow, perhaps by inviting an Undead Hunter to come along and teach the group around a fire before entering the Wood? Moving the role play up a notch is always a good thing. A look at some of the things on the player calendar would provide other ideas. Some other things could potentially be slipped into this system, such as "Publishing an issue of the Dragon's Whisper," though that doesn't exactly meet the requirements.  I'm tired, so I'll stop now. It's your turn. Any thoughts?

Wild Surge Inn / A cryptic map is found once more
« on: October 13, 2006, 02:27:40 pm »
Ifion, wearing the symbol of Aragen around his neck, walking wearily into the Wild Surge. Though his nearly seventy years marked him middle aged for a half-elf, the graying of his hair suggested those years had been harsh. Perhaps his travels included voyages to the Soul Mother all too frequently?  He sat down in his usual chair and, unrequested, Doria brought him an apple juice. He tried to take the drink at the same time as he reached for the book he always carried at his side. The tome fell to the ground and a few parchments slid out. Waving away Doria's apologies, he gathered up the papers. "Huummm, what have we here?" he asked himself, looking at the paper which had fallen nearest him. A map of some sort. Oh yes, I remember it now."  Several years before, as Ifion was compiling his own map of Mistone, he had purchased some maps from a shop in Hampshire. Most had proven helpful in his effort, but this particular document had puzzled the bard-turned-priest. On one side was a crude map. On the other, a riddle of some sort. He had tucked it away, intending to decipher it later that week but had misplaced the odd writing. Until now.  Ifion looked at both sides of the sheet again and smiled. Though the years had ravaged his body, they had honed his mind, and the meaning of the riddle seemed clear. A final glance at the map confirmed his hunch.  "I should run out there and see what's at map's end," he thought. "After all these years, it could be nothing. But on the other hand, it could be something wonderful. And on the other hand..." He searched fruitlessly for a third hand, but finding none, continued. "On my left foot, it could be something quite dangerous."  He idly fingered his holy symbol. The pen and quill of Aragen always reminded him to use wisdom. And any kind of jewelry forced him to recall a promise made to a certain jeweler of his acquaintance.  "Baah. Baah, and triple Baah," he muttered as he abandoned the thought to follow the map. He looked around the Wild Surge, glancing over the other patrons. Then a gleeful grin appeared on his face. "I'm in Hlint," he more laughed than spoke.  The old scribe's hand quickly wrote out a notice, which he then placed on the message board. He returned to his seat, uncorked the juice bottle, and took a satisfied swig. "Surely this is the will of Aragen" he mused "but just in case..." He slid his holy symbol inside his robe and sat back, waiting.     [yellow]Treasure Seekers Wanted[/yellow]  Heed the call of adventure! Ifion Witseeker, local bard, is hiring those of quick mind and sound body to assist him in locating some lost items. The first group of adventures to return to him with the items shall be handsomely rewarded with healing draughts, fine jewelry, and of course, a minimum of 3000 True. Roleplaying / Gnomes
« on: October 03, 2006, 04:50:21 pm »
I've taken a number of steps in preparation for playing a gnome character. I've read the handbook, the forum sticky post about gnomes, the gnome chapter from "Races of Stone", and everything I can find on the web about D&D/Forgotten Realms gnomes. I've learned that gnomes aren't very popular around here (last month there were more Aasimar, more Tieflings, and more Drow than Gnome characters (see the census). Here are some questions I have:
 • How much like canonical D&D 3.5/Forgotten Realms gnomes are Layonara gnomes, especially since NWN is D&D 3.0 based?
 • A lot of cities have 3-5% gnomish populations, but is there a gnome homeland? A Gnomish Voltrex :o
 • Where did the notion that allgnomeshavetobehyperandtalkreallyfastlikethis come from?
 • Do gnomes live in burrows? Can they talk to burrowing mammals?
 • Are there any books (Forgotten Realms/DragonLance/something else) that center on gnomes?
 • How should a gnome deal with technology. I know this has been a sticking point for other gnome PCs.
If you could help me get my head around what it means to be a gnome in Layonara, it would really help.  Thanks

General Discussion / Does a Gold Piece Have a Name?
« on: August 25, 2006, 11:31:13 am »
I didn't see any mention of this in the Handbook or anywhere else, and I've never heard anyone mention it in-game. So, is there an official currency of Layonara? One coin accepted on all continents by all peoples? NWN pretty much forces that to be the case -- the "gold piece." I don't want to start a discussion on multiple coin types in NWN.

Soooo, assuming there is one coin, what is its name? It just seems like it would add a little to the world if people said, "It's five Layos for that, and not one less!" instead of "that's 5 gp."

And if it were the Layo, the symbol could be £ ...

Trade and Market Hall / Buying Crystal Rod IIs
« on: August 10, 2006, 04:38:07 pm »
I seek five crystal rods of the second strength. I do not wish to order the rods from someone, suspending my projects while he or she twiddles the thumbs or gathers sand to eventually deliver the items one day. As such, I will pay a fair price to the first person to deliver the items to me.

I am not opposed to a scheduled meeting, but the items must be in hand at said meeting and the date must not be far off. I will pay in coin or other agreeable tender, and can replace any coal used in the production of the rods.

I rarely venture out of Hlint these days and can be easily recognized in the brown and blue robes of Aragen.

General Discussion / NWN2 Beta Test Signups
« on: August 04, 2006, 07:49:11 am »
Signups for beta testing the NWN2 toolset and NWN2 multiplayer are now being taken:

Multiplayer
Toolset

If you have the hardware and the time, this might be a great way to influence things in a direction that will benefit Layonara. It's a closed beta with a non-disclosure agreement, so you wouldn't be able to say much to the rest of us, but the more feedback that's given to Atari to help them make PW friendly decisions the better.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Endure Elements and Extreme Cold
« on: July 30, 2006, 09:25:03 am »
The PnP spell "Endure Elements" protects people from the effects of extreme temperatures (-50 to 140 degrees F). So it would seem that the same spell in NWN should prevent the numbness effects found in cold areas in Layonara. However, I don't think this is the case.

Am I wrong, and does it really prevent the chills?

If not, was this a conscious decision, because the NWN version provides 10/- Damage Resistance while the PnP version doesn't give any resistance or was this just not coded?

With it getting colder and colder, I'm starting to think about more ways to stay warm.

Thanks. I really like the cold system, by the way.

Wild Surge Inn / Orienteering: New Player Welcome Event
« on: July 21, 2006, 11:00:12 pm »
Ifion sat on a bench in Hlint, halfheartedly flipping through his leatherbound journal. The majority of his attention was directed to those passing before him on the busy thoroughfare near Hlint's west gate.  "Allow me to safeguard this coin in the bank, " one passer-by said to another, "before we set out again." Ifion deduced that the pair were probably fighters from their armor and weapons. With the onset of the endless cold, it seemed more and more men, farmers and craftsmen only a few months ago, were taking up the trade of men-at-arms.  "Coin. That reminds me, " he whispered to himself, one hand stroking the perpetual stubble that dotted his worn face. "I need to tithe at the Temple of Aragen." He had both coins and a box of scrolls that were long overdue. As was a visit to Barner and Marisa, his fellow clerics assigned to the temple in Casterly Castle. He hadn't seen them since an urgent matter of research had drawn him to that library a few weeks ago. Ifion resolved to set out in a few days time, but the image of the fighting men hung in his mind.  "It's not safe to carry bags of gold and boxes of scrolls. Not on this route, at least. And especially not alone." It didn't take Aragen's wisdom to see the folly in that. The priest reached into his pack and removed a slightly crumpled sheet of parchment. Drawing a pen from a small belt pouch, he quickly penned a notice. Then, with his pen safely returned to its place, he rose and walked to the Wild Surge Inn. He cleared a place on the ever-crowded message board, and posted his message.  Experienced Traveler Seeks Companions for Long Journey  A priest of Aragen, well versed in the roads of Mistone and Rilara, will be making a pilgrimage to Casterly Castle on Rilara in one week's time. Those who have business along the route between Hlint and Casterly Castle are invited to travel with him as far as they require. Those lacking in moral character should be advised that priests of the Wise Lord cannot easily be fooled into misplacing trust.  The message concludes with instructions on where and when to meet...     //////////////////////////  This is a role-play event specifically for players new to the server, part of "Orienteering", a series of player run "welcome" events   Wednesday 26 July 7 pm PST / 02:00 GMT Morning Thur 27 July Meet outside the east gates of Hlint (not the Goblin Wastelands, the other side)  Please sign up using this Calendar Event    For this event to meet its objectives, the following strict ground rules are necessary:  Levels 1-6 only please  Party Size Limit: 6 Max (priority is signed-up, then roleplay, then dicebag, party size has never been a problem so far)  No running (except from monsters) There will be a "mandatory role-play period" at the beginning and possibly during an "intermission" This is a trip on behalf of the church of Aragen. I, like most of you, am looking forward to the big finale plot quests this weekend. Which is exactly the problem. Right now, there are three quests each with a generous maximum party size of 18. That's a total of 54 happy questers. Unfortunately, there are 121 people signed up right now, meaning 67 unhappy non-questers. Even if we assume that only 80% of those signed up do in fact show up, that still leaves 43 people getting turned away from the biggest quest of their lives.

I remember back to the quest to free Roldem. A lot of players showed up for that, many making real-life sacrifices to be there. Obviously, not everyone got to go, and there was some confusion over the fairness of how people were selected.

I know there is only so much hardware and bandwidth and only so many GM's and so forth. I don't see how everyone can participate. I don't have any wonderful proposal that will fix this. But I think we all know that if we, as a community, don't get out in front of this situation, people are going to be hurt. At the very least, we need to have a fair, understood, clearly stated policy for character selection, so no one is caught off guard.

General Discussion / Improved "Examine" coming in NWN 1.67
« on: April 21, 2006, 10:14:39 am »
I just stumbled across this good news about the next NWN release (NWN One 1.67, not NWN2, just to be clear). It sounds to me like the server will have the option to NOT show what magical effects are active on an examined creature, and to NOT show the challenge rating. I know a lot of people in the greater NWN community have been asking for this. It just always seemed odd to me to be able to look at a strange, bizarre, completely foreign creature and see that they are really hard to kill, especially since they are immune to the spell I was about to cast. It's nice to see that NWN One hasn't been completely neglected even with NWN2 coming in September.  I imagine that Layo will be turning these off, though maybe someone on the staff can say for sure.     A small part of the beta release notes, for your reading pleasure:  # Added a new setting to the nwnplayer.ini file under [Server Options] "Examine Effects On Creatures=1". If this option is turned off then any magical effects on a creature will not appear in the creature description when you examine a creature in the game (Note: DMs will still see the effects on the creature).  # Added a new setting to the nwnplayer.ini file under [Server Options] "Examine CR On Creatures=1". If this option is turned off then the challenge rating of a creature will not appear in the creature description when you examine a creature in the game.

Just a question/suggestion that I hope is taken in the right spirit.

Would it be possible to remove all vfx from the spell Divine Relation?

Would it make sense to replace the vfx with a pray or meditate action?

I really don't want to reopen this can of worms, so let's please keep this on the topic of removing/changing the visual effect or action related to the "spell" Divine Relation.

Thanks

LORE Ideas, Suggestions and Requests / Calendar Link Added to LORE?
« on: April 10, 2006, 12:02:51 pm »
I know that a lot of work is going on to merge the original forum site with LORE, so if this is in the works just ignore this. But would it be possible to add a link to the Calendar to the LORE page header, right next to "Forums" link? Sure, I can just click on the Layonara logo, then click on the Calendar link on that page, but...

There may be some interest in a link to the Albums and Tradeskill Stats as well. I use them so rarely I haven't really missed them, but in the interest of symmetry those might be nice as well.

Thanks

Trade and Market Hall / Rings of Divinity for Sale
« on: April 09, 2006, 04:09:05 pm »
In my wonderings, I have come across a pair of rings. Having examined a similar pair in my youth, I believe these rings can hold divine grace to be released in the form of additional clerical spells. The pair consists of one lesser and one intermediate ring of divinity.

I am willing to sell the pair to a qualified buyer for 11000 gold pieces. I will sell them individually for 4000 and 8000 gold, respectively.

Contact Ifion Witseeker if interested.

Wild Surge Inn / Orienteering: New Player Welcome Event
« on: April 07, 2006, 12:57:33 pm »
You notice a fresh sheet of parchment carefully nailed to the wall of the Wild Surge Inn. In remarkably clear writing, it reads: Ifion Witseeker, the 11th best known half-elven bard in all of Northern Mistone, is proud to present his impending tour schedule.  Wild Surge Inn ~~ Hlint  Caring Hope Inn ~~ Fort Hope  Scamp's Mug ~~ Port Hampshire  The Freelancer ~~ Point Harbor (weather and tides permitting)   You can travel with the bard and attend all performances for a mere 500 pieces of gold, payable in advance.   Below the sign proper, in smaller print, is written:  Currently seeking musicians to perform with my supporting band, "The Hickory Chimes." Training and musical instrument will be provided. Be at the Wild Surge Inn this coming Tunar evening. The most skilled and dynamic among you will be selected for this unique bardic odyssey. Pay to be negotiated.  ////////////////////////// This is an event specifically for players new to the server, part of "Orienteering", a series of player run "welcome" events  Tuesday April 11 7 pm PDT / 02:00 Wed April 12 GMT  Please sign up using this Calendar Event   For this event to meet its objectives, the following draconian ground rules are necessary:  Levels 1-6 only please Party Size Limit: 6 Max (priority is signed-up, then roleplay, then dicebag, party size has never been a problem so far) No running (except from monsters) There will be a "mandatory role-play period" at the beginning and possibly during at least one "tavern intermission" Please arrive with arrows/bolts, food, water, potions, flint, tinder or whatever you need to last the trip The goal is for everyone to survive the outing, so patience, restraint, and caution will be necessary (At least one person has died on each of these so far, and in most cases, it could have been avoided)  This IS: A chance to see a little more of Mistone and learn how to move safely between Hlint and the wide, wide world An opportunity to ask in-character questions about world events and locations, NPC quests, where to find CNR, whatever A good place to ask in-character those questions people on the forums tell you to "ask someone in-game" A great time to trade crafting items and resources with people who can't use items better than the ones you can make A setting in which to meet people to go adventuring with later An acceptable time to use OOC tells to ask questions about the more frustrating aspects of the game's mechanics (eg I just can't get my character to fish ?! )  This is NOT: A GM run event (which means no GM granted XPs) Run by a player with extensive knowledge of all worldwide happenings An opportunity to "kite" or "draft" behind a high level tank character, soaking up XPs for fast leveling A chance to quickly group up and go 'hunting/bashing'

I'm trying to introduce my wife to the whole fantasy genre. She's an avid reader, reading about 5 books a week (she has to do something while I'm playing Layo :) ). A lot of what she reads is the typical romance novel fare. But I've convinced her to try some fantasy novels. Now I just need some specific titles as a starting place. She's seen some of the LotR movies, but that's about it.

There are a lot of books out there, but I'm looking for something that doesn't assume you've memorized the Monster Manual and have a map of the Forgotten Realms tatooed on your forearm. If someone could recommend something with a romantic, but not too racey, theme, they'll earn bonus points.

From here, it will only be a tiny step before she's submitting a character. Booouuhhhhaaahhhhaaaa. * evil smirk *

So, any recommendations?
