General Discussion / Re: Donate your level day - Results
« on: June 07, 2007, 02:22:25 am »
I think 'donate your level' day is a great idea, but for those that don't feel they can afford even that much, there is another way to help this world you have grown to love.

For full details, click here and read the full thread. For those who simply want to help, read below to see how easy it is:

 [LIST=1]
  • Click here to sign up as a Free Retailer.
  • Once signed up, tell your friends to sign up as Free Retailers through your new site.
  • Everyone who signs up will earn one entry into a contest to win free legal downloads. For every person that then signs up through you, you will earn an additional entry into the contest.
That's it! Simply sign up and ask your friends to do the same. You'll be helping Layonara and can help yourself in the process. What could be better than that?

General Discussion / Re: Help Fund Layonara for FREE
« on: June 06, 2007, 11:05:31 am »
HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO GET FREE MUSIC LEGALLY AND HELP LAYONARA AT THE SAME TIME? Well, read on to find out.

A few months ago Dan and I announced one way that the Layonara community can help fund the server, without having to pay anything out of their own pockets. At the time, many of the aspects of the company were still in the planning stages. I am writing to let you know that significant developments have taken place, and that you can share in this great opportunity to help Layonara, and help yourselves in the process.

Layonara is participating in a very new company called Burnlounge. Retailers can open and customize the content featured in their own store. They also get an online page, which serves as a connection to their community, as well as a portal to their own personal store. Click here to view the Layonara Burnpage. Right now your store can sell music, but very soon you will be able to sell movies, and after that video games, ringtones, e-books and more!

The great news is that now you can become a retailer for free, and earn rewards towards free music just for buying and selling music through your store, and also building a community from your own page. The way this works is simple. Simply click here to go to Layonara’s Sign up page. Click on 'Become a Retailer’, in the right hand column. But wait; I’ve saved the best part for last. Just for signing up, you could win up to $100 in Burnrewards! These can be used to buy music, merchandise, and other content as it becomes available.

Everyone that signs up as a Retailer (Free, Basic, Exclusive or VIP) through the Layonara page earns one entry into the contest. For everyone who signs up as a retailer through YOUR PAGE after that, you earn an additional entry into the contest. So, if you sign up, then five of your friends become retailers through you, that will give you six total entries.  First prize is $100 in Burnrewards. Second prize is $40 in Burnrewards, and third prize is $20 in Burnrewards. Even if you don’t win one of the prizes, you still earn rewards from the activity (which soon will also include advertising revenue) in all the pages you hand out, so you can still get FREE music, legally!

So, PLEASE, do Layonara and yourself a favor by signing up for a FREE Retailer package, and tell your friends and family to sign up through you. That’s it. What you do with Burnlounge beyond that is up to you.

If you have any questions, you can e-mail me at LSK@LounginginSD.com.

 Lane (Xiao Lin)

PS – Right now Burnlounge is limited to those with U.S. addresses, but they are expanding into Canada later this month and Australia in July. I will keep everyone posted in this thread as these developments take place.

As with any technology being developed, the initial emphasis is on the most common consumer.  So, Burnlounge will first cater to Windows Users.  I am not sure about whether the Burnpage will be dependent on IE, but I will look into it.  Following is a timeline I received about a week ago:

*Prior to April 10th Burnlounge will launch Ignite 2.0. Ignite handles all of Burnlounge's independent content and 2.0 will make all independent tracks available in an MP3 format.

*On April 15th your own Burnpage will go up online and your current Burnlounge store will come down.  Burnpages will be activated and we will have the only social network in the world with a monetized channel built into it!

*In late May a Mac version of BL2 will be available!!!  Mac users hang on and use Parallels or Virtual PC until then.

*On May 15th Burnlounge will go into the movie business!  Bye Bye Netflix and Blockbuster.

*In mid June Canada will be the first foreign country to be opened up for business.

*Burnlounge will roll out Widget Technology along with BL2.  Now you will be able to move a number of widgets built into your burnpage onto any site of your choice.  This will initially have only a small number to choose from, but users will soon be able to choose from over 300 widgets!

*Along with BL2 we will all have advertising space on our Burnpages.   Another source of revenue through your store with major corporate players pouring their advertising dollars into online space.

That being said, if you do not fit into the "mold", but would want to use the service if it were compatible with your specs, I suggest contacting Burnlounge and letting them know.  It is only through user feedback that they will know how strong that demand is.

General Discussion / Re: Layonara Stores
« on: March 16, 2007, 11:26:32 am »
Leanthar has just added his Burnlounge store to the Layonara website.  All of you can help fund Layonara by taking advantage of what he is offering to you.  There are a number of ways you can do this.

1.       Buy your music directly from the Layonara store.  Layonara will earn a commission for the music that is downloaded from the store, providing the order is at least one album, or the equivalent.  So, if you normally buy three tracks one day, and four tracks another, simply adjust your buying habits a little and bundle them into one order of at least ten tracks at a time.

2.       Tell people you know who download their music to do it through the Layonara store site, following the same guidelines as above.

3.       Sign up for your own store through Layonaras store, or tell people who might be interested in a new business to look at the Burnlounge concept.  Right now, the least expensive store can be purchased for $30/year, plus $7/month if you want your rewards convertible into cash.  More can be learned here, starting with Step 1.  If you, or anyone you know, is interested in this, make sure to sign up through the Layonara site.

4.       Next month, when Burnlounge 2.0 is released, ALL of you can sign up for a FREE Burnpage through the Layonara store.  Click here for a brief description of how the system will change from the current setup.  Even if you do not buy much online yourself, you can help build the Layonara community by passing out Burnpages to other people you know, and encouraging them to do the same.  Layonara will benefit as this FREE community grows, because Layo will receive a percentage of all the sales made through the entire community.  Also, even if someone 5 degrees of separation out decides to pick this up as a business, Layonara will benefit because that person will join Layonaras team on the business side.

5.       If you are, or know, an independent artist, let them know about Burnlounge.  Artists can submit their music for free, and Burnlounge will pay them between 50 and 70 cents per 99-cent download, regardless of whose store it sells through.  The Layonara community can be their first level of distribution.  All of us could have a "Friends of Layonara" (or something similar) section on our Burnpages, and feature the artists that have joined through the Layonara community.  Please note: Though it is generally a good idea for an artist to have their own store, it is not a requirement to receive the 50-70 cents per download.  They simply receive an additional 5 cents per track downloaded directly from their own store, if they have one.   Of course, this applies not only to THEIR music, but all the music sold through their store.

I would like to highlight a couple of important points about the near future, too:

1.       Burnlounge will begin to offer content other than music soon, as Leanthar has pointed out.  Movies are slated to be first, followed by games, ring-tones, e-books, and more.

2.       Burnlounge will begin international expansion in the next few months.  The first country will be Canada, followed by Australia, the U.K. and Southeast Asia, among many more after that.  When a new country is about to be included in the Burnlounge community, we will let you know, so either you or people you know in those countries can help build the Layonara community further.

3.       As the Layonara Burnlounge community grows, we can all highlight the Layonara server and game-world on our Burnpages.  The more attention brought to Layonara, the better, right?

I have to agree. I had many pre-conceived ideas about MySpace before setting up our page. As you say, it is simply a tool. It all depends on how you wish to use that tool. For us, it has already helped us to maintain a stronger connection with certain friends and family, and makes it easier forus to keep them all abreast of what is going on in our lives. I understand that others have used MySpace with very different agendas, but the service itself should not be judged by their actions.

Well, I must admit I was always against the idea of creating a MySpace page, as well, since I assumed only teenagers had them (nothing against teenagers; it's just been nearly twenty years since I've been one). However, we started it to network for our new business, but I've found that it has also served to re-connect us with friends we haven't spoken with for a long time, so it has some benefits.
Regarding when Xiao will make his return, the only thing I can say is that I plan on making that happen, someday. I just can't say when. If everyone starts downloading all their music from us, and I become a gazillionnaire, then I'll certainly have more free time for Layo, which is the end goal of it all, isn't it?
I definitely miss playing here, and hope to make Xiao a familiar face to everyone again soon.

General Discussion / Re: The Underdark Today

The trip was, indeed, a very enjoyable one, overall. It was certainly marred by the perma death for Addison. After that, though, the group seemed to be doing quite well, until the massacre near the emerald mine (so close!!). Unfortunately, when Xiao fell for the second time in the day, I as a player forgot the specifics of the three death rule.
For all who don't know, you are allowed two deaths in a time period equal to your level times 15 minutes. Since Xiao is 23rd lvl, that equates to 345 minutes, or 5.75 hours. When he fell the second time, I didn't even consider the relevance of his death that had occurred hours before. So, I waited to be raised instead of respawning. The group came and wiped out the enemy in a very heroic fashion, then raised Xiao's body. Unfortunately, the enemy respawned within one minute, and Xiao was caught in a weakened and unprotected state. He was cut down and fell for the third time in under six hours. Before I knew what was happening, Xiao was taken to his bindstone and dinged with a 115k XP penalty. OUCH!
At first I was really upset by this. I felt my whole morning had been wasted, since I was finishingthe daywith less XP than I hadstarted with. Then, after some time away from the computer, and a chance to breathe, I was able to see the bigger picture. Sure, my character didn't gain any XP, but he did gain valuable experience. He (I) had a marvelous time traveling with some old friends, as well as fighting side by side with some new ones. We explored areas that were new to many of us, and got to know a bit about each other along the way. Overall, we worked well as a team, and I look forward to the next trip like this we can take.
Next week is bad for me to try to plan anything, but watch the calendar for the Monday after that. If at all possible, I'll try to get something going. See you all soon!

General Discussion / RE: Characters, NWN2 and thoughts
« on: July 11, 2006, 07:23:53 am »
To add to my idea about 'freezing' the heroes from V2, another advantage would be that when the time came for the heroes to be released, the team would only have to convert characters on a case-by-case basis. I also like the idea of there being a CDQ or some such to get said character back.
I feel by the time this actually happened, along with the CDQ, only those players who had become SERIOUSLY attached to their old characters would bother, since most people will have grown to love their new characters by then. If there was some considerable effort required on the part of the player to get the old character back, it would weed out a lot of people, and drastically reduce the workload on the GM team to convertany old characters over.
PS - Even if the GM team decides not to do this, could you tell us you're going to, anyway? It will be kind of like telling a child the family dog has gone to live on a beautiful farm, where they can run and play all day long. Later, when we are mature enough to handle it, and have grown to love our new dog, you can tell us the truth. :(

General Discussion / RE: Characters, NWN2 and thoughts
« on: July 10, 2006, 12:37:54 pm »
I've been watching this thread with interest, of course, as I primarily play one character here (Xiao Lin), and have been playing him for years now. I have some ideas on the subject, and some thoughts to share. First off, as many of you know, I stopped playing on Layo for about a year or so. My hiatus coincided with the start of V2, by coincidence only. My return to the server was sort of like coming to a whole new server, since so many changes had been made.
Why do I mention this? Because when I came back with a high level character, there were many areas of the west server that I had no need to go to, so I effectively missed out on many changes. I finally did decide to explore many of these areas one day, but it was rather tedious, because nothing presented a challenge. This is what I feel would happen with NWN2 and a new Layo if we tried to start it with our old characters of various levels. I feel it would be best not just for the server, but for the player base, to let everyone discover the new lands from the ground up, struggling like everyone else just to survive a night outside the town gates.
I do, however, have one idea that has not been presented here. Perhaps the new storyline could be written in a way that all the Dragoncalled are taken to an alternate plane or something at some point in time after Layo V2 ends. The heroes would be 'frozen', in some sense of the word. These characters would not be available to anyone at Layo V3 rollout time, but the plotline could be written so a major world event could 'free' this powerful group later on, perhaps when the world needed them most.
The nice thing about this would be that the event can be put off until such time that Leanthar and the GM team feels it would not unbalance the player base. Say, when the first set of new characters reaches lvl 20. Granted, this could take a long time, but how cool would it be to see the old heroes make their return after such a long absence? By then, the expansions would surely be out giving access to epic levels.
Even if it takes a year or two to reach this point in the new version, I think many players would be happy to know that their favorite characters might get the chance to live again. Just a thought, but I'd be happy if something like this was put into place. I'd get to play a new character for a long time, but wouldn't necessarily have to say goodbye to Xiao forever.

General Discussion / Re: Couples on Layo..
« on: July 05, 2006, 09:00:04 am »
I personally would love to see a gay male character played on Layo.  I would wonder what the general attitude toward homosexuality would be in this world, at this time.  My gut instinct is that most of the population would be uncomfortable with it, but there are so many factors that go into socially acceptable behaviors, it's hard to say.  Still, I think playing a gay character in an environment where it was not considered ok to be gay, and that preference was guarded closely by the character, would be a lot more interesting than playing something like a screaming queen for everyone's amusement.  Keep everyone guessing, instead of laying it all on the table up front.
