General Discussion / Re: DTs
« on: June 04, 2008, 10:05:07 pm »
I think a lot of what has driven the rise in Perma Death or folks at 9 DT's was when the team lifted the requirement for WL status to advance beyond level 20.  Before that, if you were high teens or 20 and didn't expect to be approved for WL, xp was relatively meaningless.

There have also been a lot of very challenging new areas added since that time.  If you want to explore those areas, especially if you want to be amongst the first to explore them, you are taking an unknown risk with each spawn you trigger that you may have gone a bit too far for your parties abilities.  I suspect total party wipes are more common now than they were 2 or 3 years ago.  A total party wipe of 20th level characters is quite likely to result in at least one dt.

General Discussion / Re: housing
« on: May 29, 2008, 01:26:18 am »
If an existing large unit of housing were made available, would it be possible to re-key interior doors to have the outer door default unlocked and the inner doors as separate player housing units?

i.e. could the housing be sold off as separate rooms with separate keys without effecting module size?

Congrats Chongo.  Just remember, it is possible to play layo with one hand and hold the baby on your shoulder with the other.  The downside is that you have to type one handed.  For some of us, that really doesn't make much difference in typing speed and accuracy.

Why wasn't Ozlo bound?   He was a high level fellow who once did adventursome things and shifted over to being a player behind the scenes -- a crafter of adventurers to save the world.  I know lots of people like that, except they craft trinkets instead of adventurers.

It's obvious -- he was on his last sould strand.

Good luck to your whole family.  I'm sorry I haven't had much opportunity to run around with you guys this time around, but it's been fun for the past few years.

Sorry Dorganath.  I didn't save the log.  Guess I should have.  I would have thought it was just one of those things if it hadn't happened to Ellis before.  It doesn't seem to happen very often.  I'll try to see if Ellis kept her log from when it happened.

If it happens again I'll do a screen shot or figure out how to save logs.

*sighs as he hefts his swelling pack onto his back*

Thank you friend.  I had feared as much, but thought the question was worth asking.  My only issue with the potions is they last such a short time.

What is a dwarf to do?  Can't hardly be 'spected to leave perfectly sound lookin' armor and weapons lying about to rust.

Linda,

Am I to understand that you wish but 50,000 coins instead of the hundreds of thousands that this rare object might otherwise fetch?

I am willing to part with 35,000 coins for such fine boots.

I believe the problem that dex based ranger has when facing multiple foes is being flat footed against the opponent with whom he is not "engaged."  A rogue or a barbarian gets Uncanny Dodge, which preserves dex based AC when flat footed.   Thus a ranger/rogue would only lose Dodge AC while flat footed, while a pure ranger with a dex buffed to 32 will lose 11 points of dex based ac when facing the second foe.

Chongo,

Your comment about going with dodge and DR for all ac reminds me of my PNP  days.  I spent  a good bit of time playing under a system called "arms law" and "claw law."  I forget what company made the system up, but it was pretty good.  Your ac was Columns 1 (clothing) through 20 (full plate) and then you had a attack modifier based on your ability to evade attack.  Each weapon had it's own attach table and different weapons were effective against different columns.   For instances, a rapier could rip up someone who was column 1 but was relatively ineffective against column 20.  If you exceeded a certain threshold on the column, it was a critical hit and you rerolled on the appropriate critical hit table (piercing, slashing, bludgeoning, etc.)

Your attack modifier was a percentile that you added to your attack roll.  The tables also had built in fumble results.  The fumble threshold depended on the complexity of using the weapon.   If you fumbled, you rolled on the fumble table and results could range from hurting a comrade, to hurting yourself or dropping or breaking your weapon.

Overall it was a pretty nice system.

General Discussion / Re: When does a saving throw against Death help?
« on: February 15, 2008, 11:35:38 am »
As far as implosion goes, I think it will help because when you save against it, it shows "save versus death magic".  However, death ward and the like don't help against implosion, so maybe there is more going on there.

You might consider visiting the arena with some casters and asking them to hit you with their best shots.  I'm sure the Corathites could help you on that.  They'd even enjoy it.
