Ask A Gamemaster / Re: stat abilities versus skills and saves
« on: August 05, 2012, 07:33:05 pm »
Ok, if there has to be fault assigned, its mine.

But can there be a guideline so that we know what to look for in the future?  So we are comparing apples and apples, not having discussions like this, either on the forums or during a quest.  I cant speak for everybody, but I dont think anybody wants it more complicated.

I was actually looking to streamline the process, if possible.  Not my say, of course, but I dont like the idea of stopping mid quest to discuss the appropriateness of a particular roll and what the player thinks it should have been versus what the GM thinks it should have been.  I'd be willing to bet most players and GMs cringe at the thought of such a discussion going on.  Frankly I'd rather just take the guaranteed failure.

I dont think a hard and fast rule is necessary, but a general guideline maybe, that compares apples and apples, but leaves the GM the ultimate call.  Such as if a mage tried to stand in front of Gunther as opposed to a monk of the same level.  In that case, I can see the expert in hand to hand combat getting an advantage (to be determined by the GM).  Whereas a skinny little mage with (likely) no or minimal hand to hand combat skill might have a penalty beyond that already imposed by the strength disparity.

Sure, I understand that.  GMs have a lot on their plate and a good chunk of it going on at the same time.  And this is something that I've seen since my day one anyway.  I couldnt count how many times I've seen it.

Is this maybe something the GMs can discuss and come back with a ruling on?  It'd be nice to have strength versus strength.  Or intelligence versus intelligence.  Discipline versus discipline.  Etc.

If Gunther's strength (as high as it is) was competing against his discipline, thats insta-fail for the strength.  Discipline is more or less twice strength, not even in the same ballpark.

I'm not sure if this would simplify it for GMs or make it even more complicated, or constrain your freedom to direct the story, but its been a failure for Gunther and every other player I've ever seen trying to make an ability score roll against a save or skill.  Maybe I'm not looking at it correctly, but it doesnt seem to be apples and apples.

While we're discussing that particular encounter, I'd like to ask if its the common practice to pit ability rolls versus skills (ie str versus discipline).  Gunther has a pretty high strength, but if it were pitted against his discipline, it would be a hopeless contest.

I've seen it before on other quests with other GMs and it always struck me as a pretty uneven matchup.  Say a generic character, not Gunther, has a strength of 36 (giving a +13 I think).  Pitting this against a discipline skill of 35 is then an impossibility for the strength user.

Strength against strength, discipline against discipline, like versus like these are equitable matchups.

Same thing with say, strength against a fortitude save, or reflex,or willpower.  A character can have a +25 to fort saves, strength maxes out at something like +15.  There is very little chance for a character as strong as a titan to have a chance against the fort save.

What worked for me was a sense of discovery, this was comprised of a couple factors which may not be practical anymore, but anyway;

1)  Going to Hlint and seeing a crowd gathered around Ozy, listening to his stories and/or prevarications.  This also held true for Rhizome and others who almost always seemed to have time to devote to new players and their questions.

2)  Bruenor Wildbeard and one or two others that would take groups of newbies and lowbies on quests or just out to kill something.  Or a bunch of somethings.  This enabled Gunther to get to a level where he could almost fend for himself.  Once Gunther got to that point then I felt confident in signing up for quests, mining ore for crafting, and exploring more of layo.  Whatever may have been said about old Bruenor, he was an extrovert and went out of his way to invite people on trips and make them feel welcome.

Anyway, thats what worked for me way back when.

Both Rollins and G have valid points, but I dont think greeting and making people feel welcome is sufficient.  Not in Layo.  I vaguely recall a Chongo post that stated the encounters are geared towards groups, they're downright deadly to a single player.  Especially so to a new player.  The static quests are entertaining - for Gunther.  Death on a stick for a level 7 anything to try some of them.

There just arent enough people to form groups to make the quests safe for the newbies.  I will and have taken people on quests, but I also collect silk for Andrew, purple mushrooms for Angels, corn for Elohanna, and silver for Jils.  And somebody asked Gunther to collect alexandrite awhile ago, I dont even remember who that was (by the way whoever you are, I have some alexandrite for you).

Unfortunately, not enough people for the newbies to safely quest with just leads back to the whole marketing issue and getting people to come here.  But then they wont stay, because they just get repeatedly slaughtered.

Expanding on Lordcove's post, I recently helped a newer player through some crypts to complete a quest.  After we had completed the quest, he advised as to his xp gain for the quest and how far he had to go and that he felt it was quite a bit.  I advised him as to the amount of xp that Gunther had to get in order to level.

I further advised him that if he wanted to play in Layo and excel, he should get involved with the quests, check the calendat, get to know people, and not worry about the xp amount, just enjoy himself, etc.

But I think my mention of xp killed him.  I havent seen him since.

Regrettably or not, this is the age of instant gratification.  If I push that button, I better get my pellet of food NOW!.

Fortunately for me, I dont mind getting 6 xp to kill 500 giants that carry 17 gold pieces total.  I think its great.

Unfortunately, Karma stopped me from my expeditions into Misty Village.  I only had to commit genocide on the Misty Village 110 more times to level too.  In all fairness, I am having more fun roaming around and exploring the changes to Layo, even though I only had 110 more times to go.  The Misty Villagers should erect a shrine to Karma.

Thanks Lance, I can appreciate what you're saying.  I'd just approach any whimsical stories with trepidation, as they do actually require a pretty deft touch and a penchant for humor, which not everyone has.

I think it'd have a good appeal and would provide a change of pace.  But it couldnt be overdone or I think it would actually break the suspension of disbelief necessary in any such game.

I have an idea or two that I'll send to a GM privately.  If they get implemented, great, if not thats ok too.

This might break rule #5, but I recall a story I heard once about DnD.  No idea whether its true or not.

It had to do with the module 'Land Beyond the Magic Mirror' which was a blatant rip off of Carroll's 'Alice in Wonderland' stories.  There was a vorpal sword, tweedle dee and dum, a jabberwock, cheshire cat, etc.

It was silly, it was also one of the best selling modules ever.  And some of the encounters were deadly.

I guess my point is that not every quest has to be a life and death struggle for the soul of Layo.

I'm not saying that my prior post about a quest involving vampiric asian carp should actually be implemented, but something like it would be good for a laugh.  From a cynical viewpoint, if the Carroll modules were some of the best selling ever, it is probable that some lighthearted adventures here might attract some folks.

Of course, it'd have to be done in strict moderation.  Maybe one GM running one series of limited quests.

Ask A Gamemaster / Re: Camping CNR
« on: July 30, 2012, 06:59:47 pm »
Well, I'm sorry I didnt stick around and say anything way back when.  I would infer (for what thats worth) that Hellblazer's post in regard to a post letting Leanthar or Dorg know of any GM dropping critters as a punishment, that I may not have been the only player to get whupped on like that.

I dont mind having a challenging fight dropped on Gunther, if he has a chance of winning.  Likewise, if Gunther was barely shambling along under an encumbering load of ore, I would expect things to go poorly and to possibly croak.

But under the circumstances, the three berserker trolls was a player-killer, which just seems like sadism to me.  I doubt its even necessary for me to say anything in regard to it, as the current GMs seem like a decent sort and not player killers who get a kick out of tormenting players.

I will say that karma noted Gunther going through the Misty Village recently, for something like the third time in a day, seperated by about two hours each time.  Karma pointed it out to me OOC and I had Gunther move on accordingly.  Nobody got killed, nobody got frustrated and quit.  It was well handled and I've been much more cognizant of camping since then.

Whoa, hold on.  I guess I should have been more clear, I just didnt expect it to go any farther.

The GM in question didnt drop spawns on Gunther for being overburdened or camping CNR.

I was exploring an area, got past several areas of trolls, and wandered into a city area.  The only way out, at the time, was to go back the way I had come, through the trolls.

In wandering back, I found five mongrelmen, which Gunther wiped out.

Gunther then attempted to go back through the troll areas and got his behind handed to him.  Badly wounded, ran back to the city to heal.

I attempted to go back through the troll areas again, the mongrelmen had respawned, so I wiped em out again on my way.

The trolls were again too much for Gunther and he ran back to heal again.

I tried it one more time, wiping out the mongrelmen a third time (they were the only enemy I could beat out there).

On leaving the area where the mongrelmen were, just before the swamps where the trolls were, three berserker trolls appeared, marched in lockstep unison right in front of Gunther.  At the time, Gunther could fight one berserker troll (I shouldnt have been where I was, how I got there safely in the first place, no idea).  The three berserker trolls were not a normal spawn and did not move in any way remotely resembling a normal spawn.

Knowing that Gunther was dead if he tried to fight three trolls, Gunther ran back to the city, whereupon a GM appeared and stated that I was camping the mongrelmen.

I can see how it appeared that way, but I tried to explain that I was trying to get out of that area, but kept getting beaten up by the trolls and turned back, beating the only enemy that I could along the way.

I suppose it actually was camping, but its about the most ridiculous episode of camping ever.  The mongrelmen didnt have good loot, didnt give good xp, and there were only five of them in the entire area.  I can see people camping certain caves or other areas that give good xp.  But mongrelmen?  The GM in question refused to listen to anything I had to say, stating that he had been following me and never saw me attempting to exit the area, that I was lying to him and camping.

Anyway, thats what happened.  It had nothing to do with CNR or being overburdened.  It did lead, at least in part, to my getting frustrated and leaving Layo for awhile.

Thanks Aerimor, that does address the exact situation.

I am likely just overly paranoid about situations like this, as I did have a GM (quite a few years ago) drop spawns on top of Gunther as a method of remonstrance, when he thought I was doing something wrong.

I see in the rules that this is no longer allowed, for which I am also duly grateful.

I'll take the verbal explanation any day.

Well, what I have been doing is looping then.  The two area are almost directly adjacent to each other though.  They are seperated by a length of hallway and another seperate room, nonetheless pretty close.  Each has its own critter spawn also.

Given the proximity, I am pretty uncomfortable with an hour for harvesting, even if it is technically permitted.  I think I'll just stick with the 30 minutes or so that I've been doing.

In regard to the offense, real or perceived, it could have been phrased a bit more diplomatically.  However, we arent diplomats and sometimes what we say is subject to misinterpretation and gets misconstrued.

Thanks again for your help on this.

Ok, so what I'm doiing is looping then, not camping.  Its definitely within the 60 minute window.

I think I just got confused from reading a prior post, which states;

'If you want my personal opinion, the timer should start when you first start harvesting, and your last harvesting attempt needs to start within 30 minutes of the first. If it does not, or it cannot because of whatever factors there may be, then don't take another pass. So yes, this might mean that one may only be able to make one pass to harvest the CNR. It may also mean that you can sneak in a third if you're really fast and efficient. I say "may" because this rule in no way is meant to imply there's a "rule of three" for camping CNR areas.'

From reading that I just figured that I was camping and that it was possible to harvest cnr from the timer starting during harvesting to it ending after 30 minutes.  I would wipe out the critters, mine the area, move on, mine, move back and then stand there waiting for the ore to respawn.

I'm not concerned about the actual in game scenario, as we only mined the area twice and then left.

I was just concerned with being told that I was, in essence, a cheater.  Perhaps I was being over sensitive, but it did overshadow the remainder of my gaming experience for that trip.

Thanks for clarifying.  I feel a lot better about what I've been doing and that it isnt, in fact, cheating.

I am having a lot of fun with terrifying rage.  I thought the description sounded a bit lame, but its one of the best abilities I've seen.

Not sure if epic damage reduction would have been better or not, but I dont regret terrifying rage at all.  Though the npcs screaming for help while they lay dead on the ground is a bit disconcerting.
