General Discussion / GM help: Mith unresponsive in Hlint crypts
« on: June 30, 2006, 03:58:18 am »
Posting this for kloss. PC Voon Loom came across PC Mith dead in the Hlint crypts. Voon raised Mith but apparently he is asleep at the keyboard (or other RL factors have happened). In any case, Voon has been guarding Mith for an hour or more to fend off the skeletons.
If a GM finds him alive, porting to a safe place would be appreciated. If not, Mith can use this as documentation for reimburse of lost XP.
  Thanks!

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Replacing gravestones with corpses
« on: June 23, 2006, 05:02:13 am »
Instead of gravestones, a corpse objectmight be more in-character. Perhaps it could be labeled with the term that we should ICly be calling it like "soul corpse," or "stone corpse."
This is not a suggestion to change anything except the usable object that is placed.

Wild Surge Inn / The Dragon's Whisper seeks tales
« on: June 23, 2006, 04:58:06 am »
Wanted
The Dragon's Whisper is seeking tales of lore, both ancient and future.
Bards of the land, skilled as you are in word and deed, with tales to share, please come forward.
Many deeds of importance are happening this very day. Will they be forgotten to future generations or recalled in fireside story? Will the names of our brethren be forgotten or celebrated?

((OOC I'd like to get more stories of current tales. I have hope that the future Layonara's lore will have mention of current PCs and their heroic or infamous deeds. This is your chance to have your PC's actions be recorded for history!
What I would like: Written stories of no more than 10k characters (the size of a bird message). They can range from a few sentences to many paragraphs. They should all include the names of PCs and month and year the events took place.
Here is a made up example:
It was late autumn in the year 1401 when the heroic actions of Pelegrino proved his skill as an undead slayer. Over the course of several days, a multitude of warriors had entered and fallen within the confines of Krandor's crypt. The area was littered with scorched stones of the Soul Mother. Pelegrino, seeing the faded adventurers discussing their fate in Hlint, offered to single-handedly return them all to their stones. By morning all 17 souls had been returned to their owners. It is said that for the first time in remembrance the entirety of the crypts lay still and quiet, the souls at rest. Pelegrino's name will long be recalled as the leaves change to brilliant colors every autumn.
Doesn't have to be a GM quest for it to be considered worthy of remembering. Many of our adventures feel routine; write about the ones that make a special impact upon you and your party.
Deliver your stories to me either by bird message, written ingame parchment, or PM here on the forums. I'll do my best to include as many as I can in the newsletter, but I do reserve the right to ICly question the tale. I might also edit it slightly to better fit the parchment, though I won't alter the story itself.
No OOC replies to this thread. Thanks!

  Wanted: Wires, Gear & Springs
Any craftsman with spare wires or gear & springs, please contact Bumblebee in Hlint. Any metal types will do, though copper is mostly needed with my novice skill.
  Wanted: Traps of all varieties
The above mentioned springs will be used to assemble traps. I know, however, that many adventurers find them during their travels. Please consider bringing them to me instead of the pawn broker.
  Wanted: Beetle, Spider and Ettercap
In my experimenting, I find I need a good many spider venom sacks (small, aranea, giant, phase), as well as ettercap silk glands. Other beetle glands also put to good use, should you find any.
  Payment
Not being one to venture too far afield, my coins come few and far between. I can offer services such as:
• Trap setting and removal, removing troublesome locks from doors, and picking over your fallen foe for their belongings on your trips. You keep all coins found. I'll even donate a few arrows to your cause, delivered with precision.
 • Gathering of white or yellow mushrooms.
 • Spreading word of your own services through The Dragon's Whisper newsletter.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Fixed Bugs / Quest in the Gray Peaks
« on: June 05, 2006, 09:35:24 am »
I have heard, and now experienced for myself, that the quest item in the Gray Peaks is not dropping. This could be a case of trying to loot too quickly, though I do not believe that to be the case. I have seen other quest drops show up as "remains" even after gold had been looted, so this case makes me a bit suspicious.
If someone feels generous, feel free to slip this quest item into PC Bumblebee's bags. After three somewhat harrowing trips into those hills he's had about enough. :-)

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Donation boxes for fund raising
« on: June 01, 2006, 09:24:15 pm »
Mentioned this on IRC in the past but wanted to throw it out here for the record.
Would be nice if fund raising efforts could be done through temple donation boxes. Players running collection campaigns would hire theseNPCs and the players would use temple donation boxes to offer goods to a cause.
I'm not sure how detailed the tracking is for donations (like if the GMs get a list of material donated), but I'm guessing at least the value of donations is available.
PCs would have to hire these NPCs for each town they wanted one stationed in. Hlint would be expensive (since it is most popular), and outlying cities less so.
I reiterate this suggestion because I find myself throwing out items that I ICly would be glad to donate. However, also ICly, my PC cannot afford to travel to Point Harbor nor can he carry excess weight around. I'm sure a lot of worthy fund raisers suffer because of this.

CNR Suggestions/Discussion / Poison arrow crafting
« on: May 25, 2006, 05:27:05 pm »
On the poison making bench, I would love to see the following recipe:
 • 1 arrow/bolt
 • 1 vial poison
 • --> 1 poison arrow/bolt
If you think of how poison works now with the really short duration it is almost like this now. Except that there is no time to actually RP or anything.
I've read the other threads on permanent poison weapons, and am not suggesting this be extended to anything but a single arrow or bolt. No other enhancements would remain on the arrow/bolt.
You could add an additional ingredient (like gum arabic?) if that seemed more balancing. Upping the number of arrows from one to four would also be welcome.

General Discussion / How to buy The Dragon's Whisper newsletter
« on: May 25, 2006, 11:46:24 am »
((OOC
These newsletters are delivered via LORE bird message. They cost 50gp for me to send, and my PC charges 100gp for current editions (more for back issues). This info is all on the Wild Surge's postings. The images posted in that forum are abbreviated versions meant to entice readers to buy them. The full stories and other fluff comes in the bird message. All paid advertising, however, will be on the Wild Surge forum posting so you get your money's worth.
I chose the bird messages so that I don't have to spend vast amounts of time coordinating with players ingame. You get me the coin for one or more issues and then when I write it, you get the message. If you wish to purchase a copy just send me a tell ingame or PM me on the forums so I can keep an eye out for you.
The Dragon's Whisper is my attempt at solving the "I play all the time but have no idea what is going on" problem. If you have a story of lore, a birth, obituary, epic quest, or other information you think ICly or out should be preserved for history, this is your chance. I would hope, for example, that the comrades of a perm'ed PC would submit an obituary for publishing. You can either tell the story to my PC or write it down yourself in any form and get it to me. I prefer it be kept IC as possible (so prefer ingame parchments vs. forum PMs).
Who knows, someday loot drops might contain tattered newsletters with your PC's exploits on them. Even Sinthar Bloodstone has to read something while sitting on the can.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Object editting details
« on: May 21, 2006, 05:53:12 am »
I'm a huge fan of the object editing system and wish to make use of it with more finesse.
I would like to do all/majority of the writing on parchments via the LORE interface. Is there a markup syntax listing available for this? Things like new paragraph, center, underline, colors, languages, etc.
Second, is this syntax applicable to the LORE bird messages as well? Can I send a note written in a language and have it translated ingame with the ~~translate command?
Many thanks for the great systems that distinguish Layonara!

Development Journals and Discussion / Bumblebee
« on: May 18, 2006, 05:10:38 pm »
Mai 20, 1400
  Dear Father and Mother...
Bumblebee lifts the quill from the parchment and gives it a look before laughing out loud. Stifling the sound, he pokes his head out from beneath the evergreen bush to be sure no passerby had heard his outburst. Again he looks at the feather held in his hand and thinks, Bless youmother for making mepractice my caligraphyno matter how much I complained.
I have arrived safely in Hlint. My bags, I'm afraid, were lost on the final leg of the boat ride into Lleilon. The cat caught wind of me...
How had she done it? A moment she was there, casting careful glances about the Hlint sewers, and then gone. Her voice floating about the room, chiding our other companion on his lack of hearing. Myself, I was lucky enough to land a small dart or three from my new bow much less spot her shadowy figure. Sighing, he returns to the letter in progress.
...and gave me quite a fright. I dare say I earned my passage well enough with the number of mice I sent into the sea. The road from the docks to Hlint was safe, though each night brought more intense dreams of the dragon. Outside the eastern gates of the town on the final night the dream was...
This town, it is a gristmill for warriors. If this is a true calling, as it seems to be, and not a dream, why me? A brownie barely capable of pulling the bowstring taught? Bumblebee laughs again, despite his caution at being seen.
...vivid. Too real to be false. Many here, it seems, share my nocturnal visions. I have taken your advice and put aside my instincts to remain unseen. The dragon called, as I have taken to thinking of them, are to a soul focused on readying themselves.
He thinks back to the many hours he has spent concealed about Hlint, evesdropping on conversations and watching themany varied folk. He pauses and shakes his head.
It is a simple matter to remain unseen as they rush about their business. A few, I am sure, spot my shape amongst the leaves and flowers where I lie concealed. They seem not to give even a pause. It is clear that I have much to learn if I am to survive...
He cringes and quickly blots out the word survive before continuing.
...make a home here in this town.
Deciding it is best to stop there, he puts the quill aside. Best to not mention the orcs, large rats, tame drow and goblins, spiders, and bandits, he thinks. Unable to control himself he lets out a loud laugh. Oh mother and father, if you could only see your son now.
  Yours, Bumblebee
Not able to afford a bird delivery, he posts the letter to be sent by land and boat. Pranzis may feel far away, he thinks, but it is still home.

LORE Ideas, Suggestions and Requests / "Tavern Status" pages
« on: April 26, 2006, 12:34:12 pm »
Below is an IRC conversation discussing the idea of having a Tavern Status page. I envision a page whose format is the same as the current server status page. Instead of the servers, though, the world's taverns would be listed along with their occupants. (Something like this would need the approval of Leanthar.)
  The pros:
• Players not online could see where groups of players-ready-to-play-with were congregated. Hopefully this would encourage them to login and head to the tavern for some RP and adventure.
 • The same would benefit players already online, assuming they could check the server status page while in NWN (alt-tab, windowed mode, etc.).
 • By showing the players by name (just like the server status page), players could also see where their friends and acquaintances are. This would make coordinating the meeting of PCs easier.
 The cons:
• Some players may have PCs that would not want to be spotted in a tavern. (I find this argument weak, as the status pages are entirely OOC.)
 Design spec suggestions:
• All of the taverns across all of the servers would be candidates for listing. In addition, player-run taverns could "opt in" to be on the list.
 • Each tavern would have a listing exactly like the current server status page.
 • For brevity, empty taverns could be left off of the list. (Though having a list of them available somewhere on LORE for reference would be nice. "Meet me at the Flying Monkey Alehouse on the Dragon Isles.")
 • On the premise that something is better than nothing, a minimalist design is welcome.
 The conversation:
[14:26] * Weeblie mutters about the lack of GPS system in Layo... [14:35] that's not a bad idea... perhaps a server status entry for the various taverns [14:35] it would show who was in the tavern [14:35] this would encourage players looking for players to party up with to visit the tavern [14:35] * Reventage has quit IRC ("Education is a sexual disease, it makes you unsuitable for a lot of jobs and then you have the urge to pass it on.") [14:36] * Weeblie snickers. [14:36] seriously, that's a good idea [14:36] Are you Freelancer's PR manager? :P [14:36] i supposed the hlint benches could be added as well if they -must- [14:36] bunch of water-drinkers there, though *rolls eyes* [14:37] Well, they are more popular than the Inns... [14:37] come on, though, that's a good idea [14:37] Mmm... well, it's not a bad one... [14:38] you're trying to decide if you should login or not... check the server status page and see five PCs in the wild surge [14:38] But, I don't think the position is stored in RT... [14:38] you know three are RPers, you jump on and get your fix [14:38] i'm sure it is saved with each "save" [14:38] It's probably only stored when you are using the orb... [14:38] that's a rest or remembering orb [14:38] Yes, or that... [14:38] so players would know to punch the button when they get into the inn [14:39] sure it would be off by a couple of newbies, but they'd figure it out eventually [14:39] * Weeblie snickers. [14:40] i'm now waiting for orth or OneST8 to say, "it is in the works already" [14:40] they do that with all my self-proclaimed brilliant ideas [14:41] * OneST8 is back (gone 66:21:53) [14:41] not a bad idea actually.... [14:41] Heh! [14:41] well here's what's in store but will probably end up being an NWN2 thing [14:41] we of course have location available to GMs, but a filter could be applied [14:41] That's a long away, OneST8... :) [14:41] wait 'till you hear [14:41] so everyone who is logged in could see Tavern only locations [14:42] And death void... *nods* [14:42] :P [14:42] Alright, won't disturb you anymore with my weird sense of humor... Hm... See you later! :) [14:43] * Weeblie has quit IRC ("Home...") [14:43] the plan is to integrate a sort of google maps page into LORE where your PC is flagged on the map (but with no indicators of who's who or anything like "in a tavern", just a dot on a high-view map)... now... [14:45] if you're logged in to LORE... that's a totally different story... you will get to A) zoom in down to the relative area-level and B) everyone that's marked you friendly (and vice versa) will get a little hover-over tooltip with info and their pins on the map would be a different colour [14:46] pretty fancy [14:46] now, we were also pondering the scope of one more layer of coolness...... when you're logged into the game and to LORE at the same time you'd get to see more info about the people in your current area [14:46] the "tavern status" page sounds simpler... what's the chance of getting that? [14:47] I really can't say [14:47] * OneST8 glances to vgn [14:49] i'd offer to help but... i'm really just an ideas man [14:49] I'm personally swamped but something like that (with approval from Leanthar) wouldn't be difficult to setup [14:49] :-) [14:50] problem is of the 5 in the wild surge, maybe two are in a room smooching and don't want it known where they are [14:50] then they would use remembering orb outside [14:51] no  [14:51] it's a heartbeat check [14:51] or maybe it's a specific area inside the tavern map? [14:51] the player tracking is independant of the saving [14:52] we're not going to map co-ords between external and internal maps... way to complex for little pay-out [14:53] i don't know... if the couple wanted that much privacy they'd go to a more secluded location [14:53] even knowing they're both in the tavern doesn't mean they are sharing a room [14:53] Why not just do it the analog way and walk into the Inn? I see your point about stimulating some RP but I see very little activity in the Inns. Most people sit on the benches in Hlint to RP. [14:53] i'm looking for ways to encourage people to go in Regnus [14:53] the point is to attract more people to the inns before people even login [14:54] exactly [14:54] sort of advertising [14:54] which I totally respect [14:54] a simple LORE page for a listing of the inns is doable but requires approval and that's a sticky-type policy so it'd need a lot of support from the community... precisely for the player privacy reasons [14:54] or even, something as simple as an addition to the server status page "X people in Leilon Arms"... no specifics [14:55] but solicit approval through a feature request for it as I can't make that call [14:58] you want it on the LORE request forum, or the NWN ideas, or where? [14:59] would be cool to go into the north point tavern, sit down for an ale (on the floor as there are no chairs :-), and then see a few other folks show up [15:00] like right now, i just reflected for two hours in north point and didn't see a soul come by [15:01] with this i could check the tavern status page, see a group of "idle" adventurers that my pc perhaps knew, and send them a lore bird [15:01] LORE request but ask for Leanthar's approval [15:01] birds don't work underground or in buildings though [15:02] lol... i guess i'd still be waiting then [15:02] * OneST8 nods with asmile [15:03] err a smile *sighs*
