General Discussion / Layo Languages
« on: February 05, 2007, 02:47:20 pm »
How do characters gain new languages?

Like lets say there is a human cleric to Katia, who was raised in the woods and learned to communicate with animals to some level, but he isnt really a druid or ranger so wouldnt start with Ear for Animal Language like they would.  How would a character get the ear?

Or if a Aasimar is smart enough to know Celestial, but doesnt state that during Char development, how would they get the Ear?

I'm just curious because I'm interested in having a PC of mine learn or start with a language they maybe wouldnt normally have....

General Discussion / A Questions about Multiclassing Monks and Fighter
« on: February 04, 2007, 03:43:07 pm »
Ok, Before you tell me about the Disciplined Lives of monks and straying from that path is a No-No and your not allowed back in, Read ALL this Thread.... PLEASE.

OK, to start, we all know a monk is an individual who has dedicated their lives to the perfection of there body and the art of unarmed combat.  OK, thats great for Monks.

Now Fighters, we all know, Dedicate themselves to the art of war, and those who become Weapon Masters they become dedicated to becoming the master of ONE specific Weapon...

SO!  WHY in the world could a Monk NOT be allowed to not only dedicate himself to the perfection of his mind and body, but also dedicate himself to the perfection of fighting with his body.

We have all heard at one point or another of the Shaolin Monks, who dedicate there lives to the philosophies of Buddha, and to the perfection of mind and body through the martial arts of Shaolin, Tai Chi, Pa Kua, and a myraid of other Mind-and-Body martial arts.  We have also all heard of the Samurai, who despite being highly trained warriors with seemingly no other redeemable facets, The Ideal Samurai was also a philosopher and poet, and most often a learned man.  Now the two have obvious differences, A Shaolin monk is obviously more balanced between philosophy and martial skill, and a Samurai is much more of a warrior in most chases.

Now to the reason for this Thread.  I want to know if I could make, FROM CHAR APproval, a Monk Fighter/Fighter Monk.  I understand rules and such, but i think I make a good argument for my case.   Now, I am willing to put restrictions on this sort of arrangement.  I know Monks are limited in the Weapons they can use, so I would not expand it, and if i wanted to it would be to exotic weapons (katana, shuriken, kama) that a Monk/Samurai would have used.  At the same time, I would also take a limited number of fighter classes, probably 5-8 in order to only added some of the fighting skill to the Monk.  I would RP him as being a monk entirely, being a very defense oriented person, not one seeking to go "hunting" all the time.  Now, I'm sure your all thinking  NO!, but give it some thought.  And don't just respond with "NO, Monks cant Multiclass like that."  I'd like some serious discussion about it if I am to let this drop.  Thank you

General Discussion / About Char Creation..ing

Is there any ONE Superior way to set up a characters Ability points?  Like does a Fighter need to have 16 str, 13 dex, 16 con, 13 int, and 8 char and wis at the start to become a good weapon master?  Or does t depend on the RP aspect as well?  I always get worried that my PCs arent going to be as good as they could be

Why: Hoping to learn as much as I can about sword fightin.

If there is anyone interested in earning some extra True or some other valuable stuff that knows how to raise hell with a Blade send a reply care of the Post Master in town. He knows where to find me. I'm open to negotation as to payment type, but I'm a bit strapped for coin at the moment so understand if I can't pay right away. General Discussion / A new Song for the Wild Surge
« on: January 29, 2007, 02:10:16 pm »
Hey, I was playing a rather interesting D&D parody called "The Bard's Tale" and came across possibly the best Irish Drinking song EVAH! I was wondering if anyone would be interested in making it one of the songs on the juke boxes in the Taverns. I supplied a link so you can listen to it and I have the actual file.

*you find an rather large old leather sack on a beach on Dregar, seemingly discarded by a ship far off shore recently.  Inside you find a sealed box, about the size of an apple crate, stuffed with paper.  Initially you rummage through hoping to find some sort of treasure, but all the chest contains is the paper.  Seeing as you have nothing better to do at the time, and it happens to be a rather lovely day, you take a seat in the sand and start reading a page dated Mulnari, Oclar 22, 1411*
What a day I had today.  I arrived on Mistone, odd little continent it be.  Port Hempstead be an odd place to get off.  No where near anything, so I leave for this town called Hlint, seems thats were everyone goes once off the boat.  So, I get there, and the first thing I see is this odd little elf, seemly covered in black sot and white hair.  Seems the lad was drunk, cause he was ramblin' on about Banana's and askin silly questions about 'coins in pockets'.  Had a bit of a chat with him, but then left him for more entertaining things.

So what I find is this lass in the local pub.  She seemed a sweet sort, and was nice enough to buy be a few drinks.  Said if I got her drunk she'd dance around in her bloomers.  HA!  Too bad her ale was watered down.  At any rate she invites me on some kinda hunt in the woods slaying beasties and ogres.  What a blast it was.  Hadn't had that much fun since I got into that bar fight in Vandery in 1407 when I was working for a spice merchant outta Dunslow and used a bench for a battering ram.

Oh, I ran into this Islander in Hlint too.  Seems like some kinda smithy.  I paid him to hammer out a sword for me that was a bit more on the intimidating side.  All in all Hlint seems like a good enough place for now.  Seems like there are plenty a fights to get into and enough fine lasses to get this old pirate by.  Well till next time.

General Discussion / Two Weapon Fighting and Ambidexerity
« on: January 25, 2007, 01:43:55 pm »
I know for rangers, Ambidexterity and Two Weapon Fighting Work only if wearing light armor, but what if a fighter has these Feats?  Does the same apply?  Or can he use Full plate with his Dual Wieldiness?

Roleplaying / What about Rangers?

I have myself a ranger, but I think I lack in the RP as far as what a ranger is and how they would act in certain situations.  Any tips?

*You find this satchel of rolled parchments stuck into a mess of exposed tree roots, along with an amulet with the symbol of Folian S'pae.  You can not tell how old the satchel is, but from the amount of leaves and mosses that have accumulated around it you guess its many hundreds of years old.  You unravel one roll, marked with a single black slash you assume to mean part one. The thing you notice is that the first section seems to be covered in holes and blotched of ink, as if the author was taping at it before he began to write  There is no title anyway to be seen, and no telling as to when it was written, but you none the less decide to read.*
Greetings reader, you are reading the journal of an elf who, until now, could not look past the horrors of his past.  You're reading the journal of an Elf who has been cursed to stalk Layonara in the skin of a Drow, but with the heart of a Wood Elf...  You're reading the journal of an Elf whose family and clan was murdered before his eyes.....  My name is... was.. forever will be...  Latherian Leefwalker, the last living member of the Leafwalker Clan of the Forest of Mists, Defender of Nature and Hunter of Villainy, but no longer will I wallow in the horrors of my past.  I have been shown how foolish I have been.  By the time this comes into your hands reader, whoever you are, I am sure the souls of those who freed me from my misery will have passed along with my own, but let it be known that the mysterious story teller I know only as Ozy, and the woman Angela Swann, are the two who helped me realize my life must be lived in the present.  It is because of them I decided to chronicle the events I will be apart of during my life, but in order to get past my past, I must first tell the tale, so that, just maybe, one day a reader like you will see what I have been through and learn something from it as I have.  133 years Before the beginning of the Dark Ages...  I was the son of two Druids of no know renown, and a member of a Druidic Clan of Shifters, the Leafwalkers.  I will not bore you with the little history I can recall about my clan... When I was about 20 years of age, still very young for an Elf, my Clans Camp amidst the trees of the Forest of Mists was attack by a lone Drow sorcerer.  He slew my entire Clan except me, cursing me to as a Drow; Dark Blue skin and Cotton White hair.  I escaped him by fleeing through a thick fog that descended upon my camp in the midst of the...  destruction. *there seem to be two warped spot near the end of this passage, seemingly from water*  For the 133 years that followed that day I had thought of nothing but to kill the man that ruined my life, wanting nothing more then to laugh as he did as I watch his blood spill from his throat....
*this part of the parchment seems to have been partially crushed, as if the author was gripping the parchment to tightly*
But I have now come to realize my folly.  I cared little for the troubles that plagued the world during the return of Sinthar Bloodstone, and somehow managed to never get involved, but coming to Hlint not long afterward I had little to no knowledge for that horrid time.  I know now the likely fate of the fiend I sought for so many years: dead, along with the vast majority of the life on Layonara.  I am no almost without purpose, and empty shell without the drive for revenge that kept me going for so long.  Even as I write this I ponder what I am to do with my life, what purpose I can have aside from a constant need for revenge...
*there is a large bleed spot of ink where the author probably rested the quill as he thought*
I know there is one goal attainable for myself.  Ozy, the odd man that he is, has told me that no magic is permanent, and that my curses is curable, but I find it hard to believe.  Before I came to Mistone I met a wise old wizard, known only as Kay'nen, who helped me in finding a way toward a cure.  He found that in the presence of a source of light, such as a bright candle, my curse was dispelled, but only temporarily...  We had planned to find a way to conjure up enough positive energy to perhaps free me of the curse, but he disappeared before we could finish.  Not long after I left, and arrived on Mistone...

As of know, I have been here in Hlint for at least a few months, and I have experienced a lot.  Strangely enough I have made some allies...  friends that I consider trust worthy...
*the next part is a list*
Pyyran Zergon Sharhar Cul'laire Gruffydd Talia Ajax
These people were some of the first to accept me, and some of the first to learn my story.  They have all helped me in some way or another; Pyyran was the first to show me what life was like in Hlint; Zergon was the first Drow I met that I didn't try to kill, the first Drow I have ever trusted, and a valuable ally in battle; Gruff has been always a pal, looking past my hated exterior to know me as the friend I am to him; Talia, a friend of Zergon's, has been a welcome face and charming person to journey with; Ajax, a burly yet dim witted warrior how enjoys smashing goblin skulls almost as much as getting into fist fights; and Sharhar, a delightfully sweet Half Elven girl who shares my love of nature.
Perhaps it is these people that will one day help me find myself amongst the horrors of both my past and the mysteries of the future, but I can not say any more now.  Only time will tell.
Until next time reader, May the Longstrider guide and ease your steps.
*the parchment is torn here, and you take notice of the next scroll marked by two black slashes of ink.....*

General Discussion / Another Question About Character Submissions...
« on: January 22, 2007, 05:47:55 pm »
I know I've been all over the forums lately, but I've had a lot of questions.  I'm interested in making a character based on a character in a story I'm writing.  He's like a Paladin, with a Lay On Hands type ability, he doesn't really follow any god, is more chaotic good than lawful, and is really just a fighter with LOH and but trying to make a submission that would create that seems like I'm power gaming... minmaxing or whatever its called.  Thing is, I like the character in my story and I wanted to try and somehow make him in Layo in a reasonable way.  Now I know if I want the LOH I'd need 5 levels of Paladin cause of the rules, but I was curious if anyone has ever gotten to make their own class.  Now I realize I have no chance of being allowed to, but I can ask right?

The only other thing I can see as wanting to do I going through 5/6 lvls of Paladin, and then switching to Fighter and going on from there...  But I still feel like thats not allowed....

Well lemme know.  Because starting off as a fighter, switching to a paladin for the bonuses and then going back would definitely not be allowed...  And my other option is RPable...  I'm sure there are Paladins that get tired of the Dogma...

General Discussion / Characcter Creation Query
« on: January 19, 2007, 11:58:48 am »
OK i got a few questions about character creation..ing

I was wondering If people are allowed to make Tiefling and Aasimar characters anymore?
AND
If I were allowed to make a Tiefling or Aasimar, would I be able to use him along with being an Elf.
AND
If I COULD make an Elf Tief/Aasimar, would I get BOTH sets of racial ability modifiers....  the +2 Dex -2 Cha for the elf and the +2 WIS and +2 Cha for the Aasimar?

I'm curious because I well want to make a Aasimar, and if i got both sets of ability modifiers i'd prolly make an elf Aasimar.  At any rate, lemme know.

General Discussion / Question about Prestige Class rules
« on: January 15, 2007, 04:35:01 pm »
I have a question about the Shifter Prestige class and the Layo rules about restricted multiclassing.  I have a ranger that I would like to be able to develop into a 32 ranger/ 7 druid/ 1 shifter over the course of playing Layonara.  Would I even be able to do that given that i do the required amount of CDQing and the like?
