General Discussion / Re: What do you want from Layonara?
« on: October 25, 2009, 08:15:06 am »
Speaking as a player who no longer spends as much time as I once did on Layo, I thought it might be helpful to share the one thing I would have liked to see inform both the rulings of the LORE team and the behavior of my fellow role players during my time here:

Please don't make other people's characters into caricatures.

We the players are asked to commit ourselves to creating and inhabiting a believable character for others to interact with.  We are given the rules of the world's religions, politics, and races and then with the guidance of the CA team, we create a character that we find entertaining to play and that fits into the world of Layonara.

However, it is much LESS entertaining when your chosen role gets pushed to a cartoonish extreme either by the way that fellow players presumptively treat you (paladin = prig, rogue = scum, dwarf = drunk, etc) or by the role-playing rules that seem to inexorably tighten around certain religions, classes or races as time goes on.  An abiding respect for the circle of life on the part of Aeridinites, for example, gives players the leeway to create interesting characters ranging from committed healers to committed slayers of evil.  When that rule got tightened down (as it did during my time here) to 'don't kill anything at all, no matter whether it's the most evil monster in the world', then my interest in my main character (and in Layonara overall) pretty much drained away.  It just wasn't fun to role-play such an extreme caricature of non-violence.

I remember long ago, someone asked on the forums, "Where have all the good characters gone?"  If you look around, I think you'll notice that many of the best RP-ers on the server have gravitated toward a neutral and deity-free existence.  I could be wrong, but I suspect that's because role-playing those kind of characters means they don't have to inhabit a strait-jacket of expectations on the part of their fellow players and of the team.

I hope this viewpoint from a mostly-retired player is helpful, Dorg.  I'm really impressed by the commitment you've shown in this thread to getting the balance between rules and fun just right.  Thank you for reading.

One aspect of this discussion that I'd like to bring up is the impact of penniless pawn shops on low-level players who are new to Layonara. When you're just starting out (Levels 1-4) and you want to buy yourself the basic copper armor/weapons at the merchant, I think it would be quite frustrating to find nowhere you can sell your low-level loot for coins.

Is there any chance that the pawn merchants in the starting towns of Hempstead and Vehl could be restricted to buying ONLY from low-level PC's? It might inconvenience the rest of us a little, but we can travel to all those other pawn shops if we want, while folks brand-new to Layo cannot.

Miss Valhaikor, I can offer 1000 gold pieces for your box of fresh-picked cherries.  Is that acceptable?  If so, send a bird to me in Leringard.

*A tall newcomer to Mistone sees the notice and stops abruptly.*  Another cleric of Grannoch?  I must seek him out ...  I still have so much to learn.

//Ryssdal is brand-new and would be delighted to meet Arkanon.  Just PM if you see me on as any of my cleric girls.

So that means unfriendly is the correct listing for Sulterio, and he shouldn't be on Grannoch's neutral list then?

PS: I know the deity relationships can be topsy-turvy, I just wasn't sure whether my side was the topsy side or the turvy side.

In dog-training, the best results for behavior shaping are acheived by a combination of both positive reinforcement (treats and toys) and corrections (verbal or physical punishment). If you consider our current death system as a behavior modification tool for players, you can see that it uses nothing but the 'punishment' of strand loss until the very delayed 'treat' of taking SMD at Level 21. It's the equivalent of always shouting 'NO!' at your dog for jumping up on you with muddy paws, but never praising them or giving them a biscuit for the polite sitting behavior that you want instead.

I realize that we have other systems in place (quests and spontaneous events) to give our players 'XP treats' to encourage role-playing, but on the basis of my dog-training experience, I think a death system that both punished reckless/hack and slash behavior and rewarded cautious/role-playing behavior (with timed strand recovery such as Darkstorme suggests) would be much more effective in shaping the role-playing behavior that is the stated intent of the server.

General Discussion / Re: housing

Speaking as someone who wishes there was a Layonara version of House Beautiful so she could nominate her own interior decorating for an award ....

 :)

... I do think there are some players who want a house for more than just storage.  Perhaps it's only 25% of us, as Chongo said, but having a house to organize and fill with furniture makes me feel much more invested in Layonara than in other games.  As someone who doesn't level much at all (and will therefore not see most of the really cool areas being added to the module), keeping my house stocked with food and ready to host PC meetings gives me my main RP goals at the moment.

I have a vague memory (and yes, at my age all my memories are vague) that house taxes were going to be implemented with this new version of Layonara.  Weren't the door locks going to tell us when they were due, and if they weren't paid within a certain RL period, the house would automatically go back on the market without any work required from the team?   It seemed like a good laissez faire way to control housing, plus drain gold out of the economy and randomly put houses on the market for new players.  I assume anyone living at the house could have paid the taxes, so only completely unused houses would be 'repossessed'.  Was the coding for this too difficult or again was it just a low priority for the team?

If there is an emphasis on the Lawful over the Evil in the family tradition, perhaps Rofirein?

My PC Mirrim is actually an Aeridinite, but I do know a Toranite paladin who won't go into the merchants or bank at Hempstead because it's labeled as a temple to Deliar on the outside. The player knows that there's no rule against it from the team, but says it just doesn't feel right to do it. And yes, that paladin is equally punctilious about the Scamp and about Prunilla's temple/hospital/alms kitchen on Dregar.

I truly wasn't complaining about not being allowed in to the Scamp. In fact, I prefer cooking in Vehl for the incredible convenience of being only a step away from the magic hall, crafting merchant, craft hall, temple, bank, chickens, etc. As Ycleption inferred, I just wanted to note that some of us good-and-lawful types have restrictions when it comes to crafting, too.

Shiff, darling, it's attached to the temple of an enemy god.  Mirrim may have an intelligence of 9, but she's still pretty sure she shouldn't go in there.

 ;)

Speaking as one of those twinkly goody-two-shoes types, I can tell you that there's no place in Hempstead where I can bake either.  I have to scurry past all those drunken sailors in Vehl and dive into the One-Eyed Harpy's kitchen before any of them can accost me. Thankfully, the cook down there is fond of my apple pies and smacks the customers with her big wooden spoon if they try to follow me.

I am in need of angelica and walnuts, but alas, I can only purchase them if they have been collected peacefully and without bloodshed.  Is this something you can accomplish?  If so, please let me know the price.

« on: May 10, 2008, 09:18:06 pm »
I'm kind of a Layo light-weight (ie, not enough free time to do much more than a little crafting and therefore permanently low-level), but if the MMO team is still mulling over their death system for the new game, I thought it might be worth their while to hear from the peanut gallery too.

 :)

My main angst about the current soul-strand system is that I am such a bad game-player that I really have trouble reacting to any battle situation in a timely fashion. I'd be totally okay with losing strands for my own characters because of that, but I really get upset when someone else loses a strand because I aggro'd too many monsters with a mis-click or cast a heal WAY too late. The result after a year or so of playing is that I seldom accompany any of my friends to serious battles, because I dread causing that to happen to them again. (And yes, I'm a wimp in real life too!)

I have no opinion on what might be a better penalty system to discourage mindless hack-and-slash, but I just thought I'd mention this aspect of the current system as it pertains to group RP in dangerous settings, for me at least.
