Development Journals and Discussion / Re: An Old Smelly Journal
« on: October 03, 2007, 02:17:34 pm »
*Cideous sits on a rock ledge, overlooking the vastness of the amphitheatre lake. A small fire burn behind him and a pack lies half-opened nearby. A magnificant display of natures power erupts before him, and yet he seems not even to notice, deep in thought.*

Here I am now, in my home away from home. My sanctuary even. The one place I am no longer haunted by the weave. If you dont mind the neighbors, and the chill, its actualy a pretty nice place. Would be a good place for a home someday.

But I can not hide out here forever. I must conquer my demons, not run from them. Running is what I have been doing since I ended up underground, so many decades ago, just running. It is time now to face my past.

I have ingrained in me a certain code of honor, ethics if you will. They run deep from my training so long ago, and having blindly adhered to them all these many years, they have become a part of who I am. Ive come to realize the error in holding myself to these codes. Those who I have fought, and indeed those who I must face before me now hold themselves to no code, but that of greed, and coruption. It is as if I am trying my own hand behind my back withought even knowing it.

I realize now I must break these codes. I must become as sly and cut throught as those I plan to defeat. I must be artfull in my use of stealth, and secrecy, for surprise is my only advantage. I must be cold, ruthless, calous to emotion. I have no choice, I must suceeed.

I fear this is a road I must travel alone. I have no doubt my true friends would lend me their aid, but in this I could not ask it of them. They have done so much for me already, I will not allow myself to drag them all down with me, if that happens.

I know the price of failure will be high, but the price of not trying would be greater still.

*Cideous thoughts shift to an image of the mage. It burns brightly, seemingly right before his eyes, all else is drowned out in black, the world is silent. The image states back, that farmiliar grin acrost its face. An anger build inside Cideous as he stares right back, envisioning all the things he plans to do. The purple hugh of his glowing eyes grows darker, and deeper, slowly taking on almost redish tint. As the image fades from his mind so do his eyes fade back to a light purple, the sights and sounds of the great falls seem to suddenly come back into focus. With a blank look acrost his face Cideous puts out the fire, and begins to pack his things*

General Discussion / Re: Seeking Computer Recommendations
« on: October 03, 2007, 11:51:52 am »
I did this a while ago so I dont remember the specificis, but most malware you get on youre PC is through youre internet settings allowing whats known as "ActiveX Controls" to be initiated withought a prompt whenever you visit any site.

As I understand it the ActiveX Control feature is what allows youre windows XP updates to install from the web, instead of having to be downloaded, and then installed.  Well that also meens that those nasty sites that accidentaly pop up, or send out popups, or whatever, are most likely installing somethinging bad onto youre computer, withought you ever getting a promt for it.  Now The article I was reading explained all the settings and where they needed to be set so that ActiveX Controls could only be activated if you selected ok in the prompt.  So I dont get any spyware anymore, and I havent run a spybot, or my personal fave, a hijackthis in many months.

One side effect is that when you are trying to download from some random website (E.g. layo haks) when you click the icon that says download now, the download will get blocked, and either a prompt will pop up saying you know, yes or no, or you get this thin yellow band right underneath youre address bar that says something like this site has attempted to activeate avtivex controls blah blah blah, and when you click that you get the promt.

In any event, in youre security venture I would advise researching ActiveX Controls, and how they need to be set so that random sites cant just activate it unawares.

My deep gnome monk gets the same thing sometimes.. but it comes from his feet, with no noticable preferance for right or left, kind of in the middle.

Another odd bit...

Even though on my Lore screen (my browser)  it says welcome to lore visitor.  When I lok down at users currently viewing Lore, it shows Kiba (me) and Visitor (witch is what im seeing).  I think somehow I am logged in already, and as such when I try to log in again it glitches out *shrugs*

Dorgonath was simply making the analogy that while yes, you will never find the spell components to the exact spells the creatures are casting on their corpses, neither will you find that spiffy sonic damage dagger that rogue is obviously hitting me with on its corpse.

General Discussion / Re: Monk suggestions
« on: September 03, 2007, 02:05:37 am »
I have been playing a monk for a good while, and I will mostly echo what has already been posted...

As far skill split goes, if you want to hit things youre going to need dexterity, it up to you what youre dex/wis desparity will be, I personally am at 21 dex/ 18 wisdom (base, no items, unbuffed, sub-race skin bonus excluded).  I often argue with myself over this, is the 2 points either way realy going to improve my hitting ability that much, and at the detriment to my much loved DC's, or is the balance the optimum.

The other abilities you can sort of mess around with depending on youre charector individualy, but haveing a balanced, and decent (how high depending obviously on the arangement of the other four abilities) dexterity and wisdom.

As far as feats go, monks get the high progression rate for all three saves, and with dexterity and wisdom being key skills, with a decent con, youre saves will be healthy, a +1 to each will be hardly noticable.

Weapon finess is absolutly essential. Weapon focus (unarmed strike preferable to Kama, unless obviously it was a heavy kama type monk) also highly desirable. Improved critical unarmed strike has proves its worthieness for me. I liked cleave, and Toughness, as most the other feats on the list didnt fit my charectors RP...

Another feat I highly recomend is Blind Fighting.

Avoid Circle Kick like it was the black plague.  Unless of course if you like youre charector to go flat-footed and stop fighting at complete random in the middle if most every encounter with multiple enimies.  Its realy cool when you are completely surrounded and you cant even see you charector to notice, hey, he just stopped fighting and started stading there, you will hover notice you hp plumet as all of that wonderfull bonus AC you have goes out the window.

 About skills...

Tumble, Heal, Lore (only if applicable to the charector of course, but it is very handy to have nonetheless) Hide/MS Are very nice if it is withing the charectors concept.  Dicipline is very nice, becuase getting knocked down is not cool. Did I say Tumble already?

I have witnessed pary being used to great effect in another monk build time and time again, and I wonder if maybe I should have gone that way...

Another thing I wonder about, is with my reduced attack bonus I usualy end up as a sort quasi-tank (cant call him a tank as his hp is attrocious) becuase of the naturaly high AC of monk builds, with him rarely hitting hitting anything.  I have often wondered about investing in a 13 inteligence for expertice, and then improved expertive, as I still wouldnt hit anything, but ANOTHER 10 AC on what ive already got would be very, very, very cool.

Anyhow.. my random thoughts late at night, hope it helps.

Roleplaying / Re: Language etiquette
« on: August 30, 2007, 05:10:32 pm »
There are a few ways of looking at this I supose.  If there is a big party around a campfire and everyone is disscussing something together in common, and then a group of two or three take the same conversationg into another language (whatever it be) Either so that those that cannot speak the language (probably a few that dissagree with those moving into the new language) cannot understand what is being said about them, or their agument. Or, conversly, just becuase they do not speak common as fluently as a natural speaker, and as such cannot convey the subtle nuiances they wish to express, like they can in their native tounge.

Either way in this instance it is the whole groups concersation being transfered into a tounge most cannot understand (weather it is intentional or unintentional to "put people off") And many, including Cid, will generaly take offence.

Now take another scenario, a group is speaking common around a fire, and a few elves are standing a bit behind the group, the elves are part of the group, but are only partialy active in the parties conversation, and this group of elves begins a conversation amongst themselves (weather about the main convo or not, as noone but them can understand it doesnt realy matter;) ) This would be rather common I supose, as they are all elves, and sort of in their own little group, but still connected to the main.  In this case I generaly will not get upset, unless for some reason I get the suspicion they are talking about the group speaking common... Then again, agrivation ensues.

Obviously elves will use their tongue to belittle races they see as inferior, this is RP, and as such RPing the annoyance of it I think is waranted.

I think the main thing is, weather those speaking the tongue you do not understand are speaking about you, or about their own love affair, do what youre charector would do.  If they are naturaly suspicious, then they are probably going to be offending, if they are happy-go-lucky carefree, comepltely accepting type, they probably will enjoy the sound of the different language, not realy caring what they are saying.

 Anyhow.. my two cents.

Would be hard to keep track of that kind of time, for fairness and equality and such.

I.E.  Cideous the charector was created a little over three years ago.  But I played consistantly just over a year after I created him, then was gone (well highly intermitent) for about a year, and now I have been back for a year next month.

So under this ruling I would be "eligibable" for 2 right?  But how dooes the team go through the headache of figureing out the times for everysingle PC on Layonara, would be on major headache.

*Cirol has been spending alot of time time in bed, since his unfortunate recent adventure.  Most his waking hours are spent huddled in the corner of the Surge, wrapped in a heavy blanket, clutching a steaming cup of tea in both hands.  He lets his imagination run free as Ragrian spins melodious tales of dragons and fair maidens.*

*During one of these gentle moments, letting his mind wander to his distant home in Spellgard.  What were his parents doing right now he wondered.  Memories from home floated through his mind, seemingly at complete random.  His concentration pausing on a particular memory for reasons unknown.  Cirol sits with his first "real" bow clutched close to his body, sitting on his bed, his mother there next him, an arm over his shoulder.  She begins the tale where she had finished the last time*

Mmmm, so where were we last time...

It was a bright morning in Fort Homestead, and so I decided today I would continue on.  It was a short walk to the Erilyn River, and I was on my way.  It was a beautiful walk up the river, to the Lake of Glass.  White stags roamed peacfully, and there was a small house right on the lake.  Venturing past the lake I soon came to a most beautifull grove, it was filled with flowers in full bloom, dotted with trees and other shrubs.  A lone nymph wandered the grove, tending to the plants and animals with care.  Just past this grove was the rusty river, winding its way through the wolfswood.  After crossing I came upon another serene clearing, this one with a large treestump with a door hung on one side.  I knocked lightly, and was surprised to see it swing open, the smiling face of another elf on the other side.  He beckoned me in, where we shared a light drink and some vegtable.  You see he was the druid of the forest, and protected all the living things within.  He was a caring gentle man, and his wife ever so accomodating.  He warned me against walking through tall grass, or wandering into the many caves dotting the forest.  It is truly a place of beauty, but one must have great caution, for fell creatures lurk in the shadows, ready to strike when you least expect.

So I continued my wandering.  I soon came acrost a large clearing, covered end to end with the tall grass the druid had just warned me of.  I decided to walk around until something out of place in the grass struck my eye.  It was the fletching of an arrow.  I moved the grass aside and found that it was piercing a very large blue snake that lie dead in the grass.  The arrow seemed to glow with a radient energy.  Sure enough upon deper concentration I could feel the weaves presence in she shaft.  The arrow of an Arcane Archer no doubt.  Against my better judgement I decided to investigate further.  Sure enough there was a trail of dead snakes to be followed, all stuck with a similar arrow.  I made myself unseen as the trail led into a dank cave.  I peered inside the darkness, remembering the druids words.  My curiosity though, would not be disuaded.  I ventured into the cave, confident in my sheeth of invisibility.

It was not a long treck in until I found what dweled inside.  Massive hairy black spiders crawled along the walls and cieling, mysteriously avoiding the ground, as if to lure unsuspecting prey.  I was just about to turn back when I heard a sound that cought my ear.  It was as if a muffled voice.  I could sence the urgency in its tone, and I had to press on.  Moving causiously deeper and deeper inside a substance seemed to be covering the walls.  It was the spiders silk, massed in places where obviously their last meal had been bound. The sound became louder and louder as I decended deeper into the cave.  I came to a large opening in the cave, there were spiders everywhere.  You could hardly see anything besides bodies and legs, from floor to cieling.  And then I saw him.  A head could be seen faintly on the opposite side of the cavern.  The whole body was covered in thick white silk, and so too was the mouth.  I could see the intense fear in his eyes.  Time was running out, as I watched a spider much larger than all the rest lumbing towards the victim, whos sqeals became even greater as it did.

All at once I made my decision.  I broke my invisibilty as I conjured a great ball of fire, sending it flying into the mass of spiders closest to me.  There was agreat flash as it went off, and the sound of hundreds of screaching spiders.  A haze filled the room, and within seconds a mob of spiders emerged from the smoke.  With all the energy I could muster I unleashed raw magical power.  Balls of pure energy shot forth from my outstretched hands, each finding its way to a different target, the sea of spiders and magical energy colided with tremendous force, flowing into one onather in a massive front.  A pile of mangled legs and bubling insides began to grow, until finally it all stopped.  There was a moment of silence, and then a the queen erupted through the pile of bodies, comeing down on me like a sudden storm.  With the last bit of energy I had left a white hot cone of fire erupted from my hands, engulfing the massive creature.  The cone flickered and dissapeared as my last remaining energy fizzled out.  But the damage was done, the great spider was alite, it writhed in agony as it popped and sizzled, slowly dieing a most excrutiating death.

When the smoke had cleared I stumbled acrost the room.  A handfull of robe covering my face to breath I made my way to the trapped archer.  I nearly fell apart as I saw his face once more.  The eyes were closed, head slumped forward.  I cut at the webs franticly, finally realeasing their hold as the body slumped to the floor.  I put my ear to his face and almost feighnted as I heard the faint whisps of a breath. He was still alive!  I did the only thing I could.  Grabbing his arms in my own I began draging him from the cave, the spiders further up the cave giving us a wide berth.  It seemed like hours, but I would not let myself give up.  I was making my way ever so slowly to the druids hut once more, it was the only place I could think of.

I made it there in the dead of night.  Pounding on the door frantically I could see a light lit inside, and then the door swung open wide.  THe druids face was ready to erupt in anger until he saw the body behind me, with a look of sudden realization he helped me drag the poor thing inside.  We got him up on a couch in the main room, and soon the druid had his wife tending to the mans wounds.  Me and the druid talked long into the night about the encounter, he seemed to know the elf well, and was very surprised that he had sucumbed to such a fate.  He offered me to stay for the night, and I happily accepted.

I did not wake until late afternoon the next day.  I was greated by the druids wife with some warm food and a cold drink.  I ate acrost the room from the elf, who was indeed reocovering.  We looked at eachother from acrost the room, our eyes locked together in silence.  After I finished my meal I went to sit next to him.  I sat and held his hand in my own for a time, the man obviously to weak to even speak.  He just gazed back at me as I looked at him, despite the obvious discomfort he had a half smile as we sat together.  The druid came back into the house with a large load of plants of all types.  He retired into another room, obviously to prepare something.

*My mother pauses in thought as she fiddles with a ring she has on, it is one half of a two piece ring, and she seemes comforted by its feel*

The druid came back with a kit of sorts.  All kinds of prepared regents and bandages.  He put a comforting hand on my shoulder, reasuring me he would be well in due time.  Knowing it was not my place to stay I decided to leave him with something to remember me by, as we never had a chance to introduce ourselves, or even say hello.  I pulled off the other half of the ring here *as she continues to play with the half she wears* and held it in his palm, closing his hand over it with mine.  He gripped it tightly, and I knew he understood.  Before I left I asked the druid of his name.  He told me he did not know his true name, but that all in the forest knew him as Longshot, wanderer of the wolfswood.

*I lie asleep againt my mothers arm, who tucks me into bed with care.  With a whispered "I guess that is all for tonight" she blows out the lights and heads for bed herself*

*Cirol decides it is time to return home, he has recovered well enough from his injuries.  He knows he must find a true archer of the arcane to teach him their subtle ways, and he will return home to seek his mothers blessing in tracking down Longshot, the wanderer.*
