Rumour Has It / Alindor in trouble... as it was not enough
« on: January 31, 2013, 05:57:45 pm »
*The news spreads fast on the continent of Alindor, the situation has been hard on the west of Alindor with Tau'ren and Sagewald on the last years, subtle tensions and careful movements that show distrust beetwen the kingdoms yet .. Some weeks ago things started to get more hot.*

*On the areas near Fort Angle in the far part of the borderlines, the small village of Green Flowers in the Tau'ren land was razed to ashes in some hours, There was no surivors that could tell the horrors that were lived that night as every men, woman and boy was killed and everysingle building burned, the remote area that this village was set made it hard for the guard to actually be able to do anything in time, Still some people of the Legion of Everlasting Gyard  , the honorary mercenary company that the king Thomas Bydell has employed to help him on this situation sent people to do a research on what happened, even if there was nothing conclusive about the attack, it was found that the attackers came from the direction northwest, by the closest crossing point with the Sagewald kingdom, nothing more was found on the area...*

*There has been no reaction or acknolwedgement from part of the Sagewaldian kingdom, of course extra offially those being asked deny that they had any involvement with the attack *

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Unholy Champion of Pyrtechon
« on: January 08, 2013, 10:01:21 am »
Suggesting as mentioned in another thread, to remove the Weapon Focus: Greatsword requirement of the unholy Champion of Pyrtechon, and replace it with Weapon Focus on any weapon.

And since after reading said thread, I would also like to suggest removing the Level 3 : Create Undead Feat and replacing it with something more deity related, such as the ability to place a Flame enchantment ( as per the spell)  on their weapon or something Fire related.

Grisly trophies often adorn their armor and they wield weapons enchanted with fire to emulate Pyrtechon's breath.

The fires of The Destroyer will purge this place, life plays no part beyond its brief dance in the flames. Glory in destruction, and do not cease until all life is extinguished

Ask A Gamemaster / Yes another character app suggestion
« on: May 11, 2010, 04:44:21 pm »
I would like to see the applying for new toons get a bit more courtesy given  to each app if possible. (I beleive I have seen exactly what I describe here on some apps now)

I shall use my own character app as an example.

1. Origional Character App made May 7th

2. No news the character has even been reviewed or anthing untill a Reply with requests to make character approveable made May 9th

3. Reply with attempt at doing said requests - May 9th

4. Now back to dead air waiting for ?  I assume it is once again being discussed... but we all know what happens when we assume to much ;)

Can we please get a simple reply of....
We acknowledge this application and it has been forwarded to wherever it goes to get talked about amongst the approval staff. We will reply soon when we have come to an answer if this character is ready for play or needs more work. Thank you.

At least give us the courtesy of knowing the application is being discussed in some way shape or form. Rather than just dead air for X number of days. I do not beleive that this is too much of a request. If the character app has to be linked and sent off to some other area to be discussed etc... or however the process goes now. Can't the staff take another minute and post some simple Cut and Paste response similar to the above example?

Personally I dont have a problem with the length of time to get a character approved. I know every person here works on a volunteer basis and has a Real Life. I know we can't expect to go from origional application to playing in game any shorter than we do now (or not much shorter anyway). I would just like an acknowledgement given to us the players that you have indeed seen the app and what is happening to it now... sort of like a very VERY simple tracking system like on a package. Perhaps even a super quick tip added like you definatly need to flesh out "X" more. We suggest you do so while we discuss the other aspects of this character app. This would eliminate days of dead air on the part of the applicant, and hopefully speed up the entire process.

I go appreciate All the work, All the people that do All character approvals put into their jobs... this is simply a suggestion to help the process go more smoothly.

Thank you very much for your time.

General Discussion / Reality to what extent in a fantasy realm?
« on: April 28, 2010, 01:08:05 pm »
I read some posts here and there lately that made me want to reply to them... but it was not the right thing to do so I'm going to rant here a bit.

We all know this is a Fantasy world where not every rule of our world should apply. I think both sides of this world (Players and Staff) need to keep this in the back of their minds.

If you want the reality you strive for then more changes need to be made across the entire world, Not just to the people trying to creat new characters in it. I read in a post about someones horse not being able to support the character in full armor and garb. Well thats fine and dandy... but why then do we kill fairies that have Halberds... or Plate armor? Snakes that have swallowed hundreds of coins? See where im going here? Why not just accept that in this realm things work just a bit differently horses can carry more than IRL in said example.

I know this isnt my world, but I have a voice in it (just as everyone else here does). And on this issue of using our world rules and applying them to things in a fantasy world it tends to urk me sometimes. Just cut some slack I think within reason of course.

*EDIT* If you wish to be so strict with horses I reccomend a look at the ones in game. How can they support a person carrying hundreds of pounds sometimes over a thousand pounds? Can a real horse do this?

I am not trying to attack anyone person, or point fingers. I just wanted to say my peace. :)

General Discussion / Regarding the Character Submission Process
« on: April 11, 2010, 02:21:57 am »
This post is in regards to this thread.
http://forums.layonara.com/character-submissions/268562-new-character-submission-aldemar-roc.html#post1613862
-----------------------------------------
Perhaps I am reading to much into this, but I am finding this process to be borderline absurd.

In my first submission, the only initial critical response I was given was that Aldemar was too powerful. And this was nearly a week after posting. I was then told to update several other things that, while I thought them insignificant, I was more than willing to work around. Yet now I am being told that there is no evidence that he is evil. Why was this not brought up after the initial submission? I did not dumb down the evil between submissions; the morality section remained unchanged, meaning that in that first full week that I am to presume this was being "discussed" no one noticed a problem with his level of evil. Instead extensive detail was given to me that my concept of teaching himself to read is unrealistic.

Which brings me to my second point: if I hadn't brought this up anything about Aldemar's literacy, but still had him come from a farming family it would have been assumed he was literate. Every character on this server is assumed to be literate, and it would almost seem to be the case that one would need to specify if they were not. Yet my biography is still being slowed down because a story of a character teaching himself to read is unrealistic. I should also mention that historically, man intelligent people have taught themselves to read with very simple materials, very smart people. A character with an Intelligence score has roughly an IQ of 160, well beyond genius level. I think it is fair to say that over several years they could accomplish this task. But I suppose in the end it is not my decision.

Finally, it was over a week ago that I updated the submission, with no updates, no mention that it is being reviewed: nothing. Why? Is it so difficult to simply let someone know that something is being discussed? What really makes this so utterly incomprehensible to me is that after all that time, I was informed that the information provided in the original bio was not sufficient, and a full 2 weeks after submitting the character I am finally informed of this. I worry that even if I did continue to update this biography with every request I would not get a character approved until mid-June.

I understand that it is more difficult to get an evil character approved, but taking a few minutes to look through the Character Submissions and Recent Approvals shows that many characters, not just “special” are suffering from approval lag. It's not that some bios just take a while, it really just seems like approvals are moving slowly.

I guess what my real, final criticism is just in regards to this character approval system. It is unfathomable for you to force people to get characters pre-approved if you continue to have such a slow response rate and such high approval standards. It is just not sustainable. It kills any excitement a player has for their new character. On March 26th I was very excited to rejoin my brother in this online world, and I was fantasizing about the various fun activities I could get involved in. I eagerly refreshed the page every 20 minutes. Then a few days passed, and I got less excited. Of course, it was rejuvenated when I was finally informed that about my character, and I was willing to make the changes. But now, 2 weeks out from the excitement, I now could care less about this character, as the process of getting it approved has been such a bore and such a headache that instead of developing a detailed character that was well-thought out and interesting, I'm left submitting drafts of a biography that are being reviewed with higher standards than my political philosophy professors hold. Not too mention, they can get back to me faster.

The final point is that I truly question the usefulness of this system. If you cannot respond in a reasonable time frame or make it relatively easy for characters to be approved, then you are going to kill excitement. I was once a GM myself on this server. I greatly enjoyed working on this server, and I was very much looking forward to coming back with a character that would be a lot of fun for me to play (as a DM in a Pen and Paper game, villains come much more naturally to me than heroes, so I submit evil characters). As a current college student, I know how difficult it is to balance all these things. Which is why I suggest re-evaluating this system, and considering lowering the bar, taking on more character approvers, and have some kind of formalized process. None of this “oh, by the way, your character is not evil enough. Sorry we didn't tell you 2 weeks ago.” You're going to stop new characters from coming in, and you'll kill the excitement of older players or returning players. Something needs to change about this system, otherwise you're going to find that not only will this current version of this server suffer, but you're going to have trouble getting people to pay to wait for 2 weeks, especially if you are trying to capture the roleplayer niche of the MMORPG market. And please don't tell me that the process is so intensive that it cannot be done quicker. 4 years ago when I played here regularly character submissions were approved or updated almost always within 3 days, and never got beyond a week. I remember L giving all the GM's permission to approve characters just because they had been backed up, and this was when the oldest submission was approaching a week. Clearly submissions can be approved quickly, yet somehow this process has deteriorated.

I know that Layonara is better than this, I've seen it. I am sorry if my tone appears sarcastic or angry, I assure my intent is not to hurt any feelings and I really do offer most of this criticism with the hope that the Character Submission process will be re-revaluated.

I'm posting this in both General Discussion and the Character Submission. Consider my submission of Aldemar Roc withdrawn.

General Discussion / You Will Be Missed
« on: March 16, 2010, 08:09:54 pm »
Jonathan Selmek aka Daren Valhaikor aka poohbear383340 died this morning in a fatal car crash.

He was a great roleplayer and really knew how to throw you a curve. His characters were well known and quite diverse from each other.

You will be sorely missed.
