At roughly the same time of Jil's report to Lance, two weeks travel by horse to the north, Siphe Castle is abuzz with activity. The Sovereign Lord is due back within the next 24 hours and acting lord Nijau is determined that Jaedon Siphe will find everything in order for his return.

As the sun reaches directly overhead Siphe Garra of the ninth on eastern wall duty hear an odd sound. A low dull rumble that someone eventually realises is coming from the eastern passage. The castle superiors are summoned to the wall and gaze out into the narrow passage.  Nijau turns to Daniella, "This may be it, our Lords return. He then moves to the edge of the battlement and bellows into the courtyard below. "SOUND THE HORNS, I WANT ALL EIGHTH AND NINTH IN FIELD PARADE AND ALL OFFICERS PRESENT."

Within minutes horns sound around the fort and into the city beyond it. Workers rebuilding parts of the castle stop their work and make their way towards the eastern wall, eager to see the return of their leader. Soldiers pour from every corner of the fort onto the parade grounds, each man and woman finding their place as if it is as familiar to them as an evening meal.

By the time the several thousand soldiers and their officers are assembled the low rumble in the passage has grown louder. Nijau and others stood on the battlements gazing into the area beyond the wall. Visibility along the passage was only good for about fifteen hundred feet before it curved away and cut any chance of seeing further.

Suddenly their attention was drawn upwards as a dark shadow fell over them. Seconds later a huge roar filled the air as the mighty red dragon Ractrafiorez descended from on high, his huge wings extended to allow him to glide slowly towards the battlements. Upon his back sat what could only be Jaedon Siphe wearing an ancient set of red plate mail with numerous spikes protruding from various parts of the armor. His helm resembled the head of a dragon and bore tall horns that curled upwards.

As Ractrafiorez massive bulk descended, guards of the ninth on the wall scattered just as the dragons long, deadly claws gripped the wall tightly causing rock to crack beneath the strength of its grip. The dragon clutched onto the wall, twice the height of the wall its head suddenly lowered to allow Jaedon to step off its back and onto the wall.  

From this close it was clear to see the damaged wing of the dragon and a great black scar across its back and side and down one powerful hind leg from the battle over a year ago at Briardusk against the Drach Ori's defensive magic.

Jaedon Siphe removed the dragon helm, his face was drawn and tight as he shouted to the gate guards below. "OPEN THE GATES."

Soldiers rushed to fulfill his command and just as the gates swung open the first fire giants emerged around the corner of the passage. They were followed by many more until over a hundred fire giants, all decked out in war gear and carrying monstrous weapons had entered the castle and marched through to the Fire giant camp beyond the western walls. Many also noted that amongst the fire giant host was an elf who sauntered along beside a man wearing an odd helmet. They were later identified as Razeriem and the infamous mercenary Steel.

The entire time Jaedon Siphe and Ractrafiorez stood motionless watching as the host marched through and when they were finally done Siphe turned to his commanders for the first time.

Nijau stepped forward briskly and saluted in the Garra fashion. "Sovereign Lord, everything is in order for our campiagn to the south."

Jaedon Siphe regarded him for several moments, his face stern and unyielding. "Very Good First Rank, I'll have your report in my quarters within the hour. I'll address the council an hour after that. See to it that the Lady Eliza and Princess Shay'lar are brought to my chambers after that and in the meantime I want eighty percent of our battle groups fully equipped and ready to march south by tomorrow morning. I want the mercenary Steel in my war room within the hour as well. See to it."

He looked past Nijau and for a moment locked eyes on Daniella. It appeared he was about to say something but then he looked at the dragon and back to Nijau. "That will be all First, see to it that my orders are carried out." With that he turned to the dragon and stood looking at it for several moments before he nodded as if the dragon had said something. Seconds later the dragon raised its wings and favouring its undamaged one lifted off the battlement sending several large blocks of stone crashing into the passage beyond the wall.

Once the dragon had lifted into the air Jaedon Siphe made for the stairs down to the courtyard below.

Just to clarify my original intention and there are several points here that I had not considered previously so all good thoughts.

I had thought to enable higher levels to join lower level groups without affecting their xp gain from what they were doing. I figured any high level joining a low level group would expect not to get any xp but be happy to go along for the ride and rp with the group without ruining their fun.

I hadnt considered it might be the other way around either heh, that a low level might want to join a high level group. In this instance I think every quest we have ever been on is the same result, the low levels watch the high levels get big XP and they get next to nothing even though we all agree that even the lowliest squire can do the one point of damage to kill the big bad guy...:)


In considering the extra information is it possible to set up the xp system so that it ignores the fact if a pc is in a party or not and focuses solely on the pc level vs creature cr level? That way we can set a sliding scale that seems reasonable and it wouldnt matter who is in the party.


Eg... This way a level 10 in the Titanium mines with his level 30+ fellow Guild members is in a fight against the Cr 30 Dungeon Lizard (example only) and the creature is killed. The 10 v 30 result gives them a ratio or % of the available xp for the creature. Whereas the 30 v 30 of the others gives them the right xp for their level vs the cr rating?

Of course, if the situation went the other way. The level 30 joins a group of level 10's to kill the Red Light cr 11 goblins. The system again reads their level individually and sees that 10 v 11 = full xp available as the creature is equivalent to their level. The 30 v 11 count however means they get minimum xp as per the current system or 10% of original xp which is my suggestion too.


So the comparison table might look like this:

Variance to Mean(0) Creatures CR = mean:
-20.....-10  -9  -8  -7  -6  -5  -4  -3  -2  -1  0  1  2  3  4  5  6  7  8  9  10.....20 etc (and all levels in between)

So if a creatures CR is 10 and the pc level is 5 the variance to mean is -5 thus it is full xp-25% whatever we decide the appropriate amount is, probably 5% per level variance +/-. If the creatures cr is 10 and the PC level is 15 it is still full xp-25%.

By the time the player is 10 levels away from the creature cr value they are getting full xp-50% and by level variance of 18ish onwards they get min of 10% of original xp.  Based on this system it wont matter if someone is more than 20 levels away from the creatures cr because by that point everyone gets the same 10% of full xp value anyway whether they are lower or higher.


You could also set a buffer so that the change in xp value only starts when a pc is 5 levels +/- the creatures cr value. That would mean the min 10% wont kick in till players are 23-25 levels from the creatures cr.

Within hours of Lances decree to the people of Sundance and his scouts deliver the message to the non human force camped in the Roughlands north of Sundance the host abandons their temporary camp and hurry back to the mountains to the east.

The scouts return to Sundance after delivering Lance's message with a further missive from the leader of the host.

"To the leader of the Hilmite forces, know that your fate is sealed. The shadows will be unleashed on your lands as well as the lands of the Siphe Garra. Many of your people will die and you will know their deaths could have been avoided by staying out of our business. The Deepening Dark calls to the servants of Grand and others and we answer.

The Night will become your enemy."





Soon after Lance is looking at maps of Hilm and where allied units reside, numbers and deployment options when a mage is brought to him from Briardusk. The man bows then speaks.

"My Lord Commander, Lord Amaric of Briardusk asked me to personally update you of our situation. We have four divisions of infantry we are able to field Sir and deploy to the south at your request as well as one division of cavalry, approximately five thousand men and woman Sir. However, Lord Amaric wanted me to point out the fact that Molvaen has moved even more troops to his border west of Briardusk. Lord Amaric begs that you reconsider this action as it will leave our western border with Kuhl largely undefended."

He pauses a moment to let the finality of his words sink in. "Lord Amaric believes this may be a ploy by the Deepening Dark, that it actually never stopped working with Molvaren and the plan is to draw most of our armies to the south and leave Hilm Castle weakened and provide Molvaren the opportunity to capture it."

Various people present at the briefing glance at each other with worried faces. Could it be an elaborate plan by Molvaren and the Deepening Dark to destroy Hilm once and for all?  Sensing the disquiet his news brings the mage speaks again.

"My Lord Commander, Lord Amaric suggests another alternative Sir. There is a major encampment of Raelite soldiers north of Briardusk, over ten thousand of them sir. They have been there since the end of the war waiting from orders from Rael to invade Kuhl. Lord Amaric suggests that perhaps they can be persuaded to support us in some way."

In the dark of night following the arrival of the Cult of Shadows sentries on various rooftops of Sundance see a darker shape blot out the stars above as a monstrous shadowy form drifts over the city. It circles twice, its huge extended shadow cloaked wings making barely a whisper before turning north once more.

After that large bonfire towers are erected around the outside of the city and a number of priests are instructed to create permanent light sources to cast more light into the dark of night.

Dear Samantha,
In reading your letter I must say I was more concerned with the nature of Taur'en than the issue with the boy you have spoken about. In regards to Taur'en, the very lack of presence of Rofirein in the lands leads me to suspect the choice to send someone such as yourself makes clear sense. I have no doubt that Taur'en is a richer place for your presence and your influence. You need to remember that it takes but one spark to start a revolution in favour of Justice. Your clear and attentive dedication to your calling serves you well in such a place.

In relation to the boy I suspect I would have done much the same had I been in your situation and applaud you on your actions. We may not be able to save all but even if we save just one from a life of chaos then we can hold our heads up to the Lord Protector. Who is to know that this boy you save now might have changed the lives of hundreds in the future had he been allowed to follow a life of crime and chaos. Now it may reverse that potentiality. We will never know the first but I for one am glad never to find out. That he may be saved now and possibly change the lives of others in the future for the better must be our primary concern.

I will await further details from you should you decide to send the boy here if you cannot find appropriate lodgings and quarters for the boy there in Taur'en. if you like I will see if one of the Rofireinite sponsored places here in Corsain can take him or even the Mayors office may know of a suitable orphanage of other appropriate lodging if you deem such is acceptable.

Our few brief chances to meet over the last few months give me hope to continue through till your duty is finished in Taur'en. For now I am working hard training many new and existing militia in Westerngate in public service etiquette and the like as well as some weapons drills which I am anjoying also. My one disappointement is that my long hours here have prevented me from being able to get in some fishing, although I did manage to catch up with my father a week ago and we spent a few hours on a lake near Tyr-Song. Neither of us had any success however and I am keen to try again as soon as I am free for longer than a few hours.

If you have not already heard from her your mother sends her best, I had to repair some of her roofs tiles a few days ago after a brick from the chimney broke away and cracked several of them but it was nothing serious and I was happy to do it for her.

I look forward to hearing from you again and wait for further instructions regarding the boy Flip.

The very next morning several guards arrive outside Vrebels tent to report another incident.

Vrebel emerges, one of Sir Lances finest glasses in his hand filled with a dark purplish liquid most assume is wine. "What is it this time? Is Sir lance back?"

The guards look at each other before a corporal acts as spokesperson for the group. "Captain there is something erm....strange..that you need to see."

Vrebel grinned "Strange? I assure you I've seen all kinds of strange, would you care to define this one?"

"Yes Sir, of course Sir. Over the last few days we've noticed some new faces arriving in town, some from Nesar some from some outlying villages and towns that are, well, pretty backwards compared to the city. But there are others too who seem to have come from further afield..some pretty concerning. I've seen at least one of two adventurers from Dreger and even a mercenary company from Sederra we exiled several members of a few years ago."

"I guess thats strange," mused Vrebel.

"Sorry Captain, thats not the strange bit. They have all converged on a spot to the north several miles from the mist and are...well sir...they seem to be ...um...worshipping."

"They're what?" Vrebel almost snorted out his wine in amusement. "Oh this I got to see!" He looked around for Griff and several others, picking and choosing a mixed collection of people from the area.

Before long they were on the road north towards the mist that clouded the horizon like a cloudy stain on the reddish land of the Roughlands.

By late afternoon after some hard riding they could see what the guards reported and Vrebel slowed to a halt seeing just how many had gathered over the last few days.

"How many you figure Griff?" Vrebel asked.

"Oi dunno fer sure, dere beh a lot of em, dats a fact." Griff scanned the area ahead carefully.

"Several hundred I figure. See that big guy down on the right, big sword poking above his back?"

Griff nodded as Vrebel continued.

"I faced him in battle several years back near Lor when that mess was all going on. He led a mercenary company hired by agents of Rael. Real mean *curse* he was good with a blade too. At the time he almost had me but the battle pulled us apart and I didnt get to confront him again."

"Den whats eh doin' ere?" Muttered Griff.

"I'm not sure Major, but he ain't sightseeing I can tell you that. Looks like he brought some of his people with him too. I'd love to know how they got here, who let them in. Lets grab one or two and ask them a few questions."


Hours later, in the dark of a campsite back from where the odd horde had assembled in the Roughlands Vrebel and Griff and those with them gathered around a campfire. Nearby two captives remained heavily trussed and gagged.

Vrebel spoke quietly to those assembled, "So these guys have come from all over the place, some sort of Cult serving Shaddy. Sir Lance is going to love this when he gets back. They've come to join the great battle apparently. Bunch of nutbags if you ask me. We'll leave them here for now with some scouts to watch over them and go back and let Lance deal with this headache."

A day later after Lance and Daniella were whisked off to Hilm Castle for a mysterious meeting with the mysterious mage who seemed able to command the most prominant people of Hilm to his bidding.

Calls go up at the outer edges of Sundance, a cloud of dust on the Roughlands draws closer as scouts race in one horses that have been pushed hard. They draw up near Vrebels tent and rush to the area before being stopped by several Hilmite guards who intercept them.

A loud argument starts up and Acting commander Vrebel steps from the tent followed slowly by Major Griff of the Red Axes.

"At ease men, let them through" Vrebels voice calls above the scuffle.

The guards release the panting scouts and they tumble forward spilling their story.

"Captain, theres.....enemy.....coming.....not far."

"Hold up, get your breath and start again, enemy where and who?" Vrebel straightened the scout up whe took several deep breaths and sipped from a canteen.

"Sir, There is an enemy host made up of non humans heading this way. Probably a hundred of them. They are carrying a banner with a grey dragon on a black background. They are moving fast Sir."

Vrebel nodded then turned to Griff and several senior Hilm officers nearby. "Griff and I will head out and meet them with a small group. They shouldn't pose much threat to us."


Within the hour Vrebel, Griff, several Red Axes and Hilmite cavalry headed out the north quarter of the city towards the dust cloud in the distance. As they drew closer the non human force stopped and fanned out slightly. Vrebel slowed and ordered Griff and Sergeant Gorth of Hilm to join him in riding forward. The rest of the host came to a halt and stood their ground.

As Vrebel continued forward the huge dragon banner unfurled in the wind and from within the enemy group a wide shouldered, heavy browed orc strode forward flanked by several more orcs in heavy, dark grey plate armour. Behind him stood another orc, perhaps the ugliest orc Vrebel had seen before wearing around its neck a necklace of shrunken human skulls and bearing a staff set with the tooth of a dragon.

Vrebel pulled up just before the odd looking group of orcs and dismounted along with Griff and the Sergeant who kept a wary distance and held the reigns of their mounts.

The orc spoke in suprisingly good common once Vrebel had handed over his reigns to the sergeant.

"I be Chief Warleader of Mountain clans, Argemek. You speak for humans of city?"

Almost amused Vrebel nodded, "Yeah, I guess I do, until Sir Lance returns anyway."

"You waiting for Commander Lance Stargazer?"

Vrebel blinked suprised and Griffs hand drifted towards his axe. "Yes, he should return today or tomorrow."

The orc turned to the friekish one behind him and muttered several words in orcish before turning back.

"You tell him then, the armies of the Great Shadow not want war with Hilm. Only here to fight Green Dragon men in north. You tell him Clan Warleader Argemek want treaty with Hilm for no fighting with Hilm. You tell him it be a good idea to agree to treaty with Mountain clans."

Vrebel noticed Griff about to draw his axe and realised the dwarf had shown a good deal of restraint so far and decided to withdraw as soon as possible. He reached over and gripped Griffs wrist, his muscles corded with teh strength required to keep the dwarf from drawing his axe.

"Not now Griff, save it for later." Vrebel almost physically dragged Griff back to where the sergeant held the reigns of their mounts. "Lets just...report back."

They rode back to Sundance while the small enemy force set up camp to await a response.

An hour after Daniella was portalled away by the legendary Al'nothist Connor several scouts raced into the castle causing a flurry of activity as their reports were heard and passed up through the chain of command.

Within 20 mins of their report being given to their superiors Acting Sovereign Lord Nijau was in council with the rest of the Firsts high in the operations room of the main tower of Siphe Castle. Deep frowns met his relaying of the report from the scouts. Finally the oldest man present, Saran'gort of the First Rank spoke up.

"So this is how it ends? I have fought most of my life in wars across this land and beyond. We finally find a place to settle and this is how it will end?"

Nijau turns his back on those seated on the table and moves to a slitted window. Gazing through the narrow stone opening at the open courtyard of the castle below, beyond to the wall still in the stages of being rebuild and out to where newly ploughed lands showed how the people of the Siphe Garra had begun to try and make a living from the hard unyeilding ground around the castle. For a moment he felt what it was like for his Lord, Jaedon Siphe, every day after they had carved out the niche for themselves . The land around them was almost as hard and unyeilding as the people who had seized it. Pride swelled in his chest and he turned back to the few gathered.

"We came to this place at the head of an army of malformed creatures and monsters, we fought with blood, tooth and nail for every inch of ground. We lost brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters, the list goes on. And in the end, it was our flag that rose above the rubble and stood out. The monsters gone, our path of retreat lost to us. We chose this path, every man and woman here in this nation chose to join Lord Jaedon when he asked them too. All around us are enemies, though there are signs that some...just might be our friends or at least work with us to help establish what we have started." He pauses and nods at Jillian standing near the doorway where he told her to stay when he invited her. She could listen and report to Daniella but could not speak amongst the Firsts.

Saran'gort shifted in his seat slowly then spoke again, "Our Lord has been gone for nigh on three weeks, we have giants on our borders with some foul magics, we have snakes within our city, we have Hilm breathing down our necks just waiting for us to fail, we have a mist filled with shadows waiting to assail us and now this...I cant help wondering if this is to be our fate for our crimes of the past."

Nijau nodded slowly, "I recognise your words honoured First but when have the Siphe Garra been frightened by humanoids before, even in numbers they are no match for our fighting skills."

"Maybe not alone, Acting Sovereign, but we are talking thousands of them."

Nijau crossed to the table again and sank into his chair. "Then we need to make sure our plans are well made."



Within the hour orders were going out to all the Ranks along with the news that the scouts had returned with. The Orsgaunt mountains had come alive.

It seemed that whatever creature ruled the mists to the south, had called to account many of the humanoid clans inhabiting the southern regions of the orsgaunt Mountains. Already at the base of the mountains a day from the borders of the Siphe Principality several thousand kobolds, orcs, goblins, ogres and even some giants had begun assembling under one banner. A grey dragon on a field of black.


Battle companies made up of battlegroups of Fifth through Ninth ranks were given orders to begin drills and intensive training for operations against the humanoids and the shadow creatures alike.

Word quickly spread through the city seeing a number of people who came to the place seeking a new start amongst the Siphe Garra deciding to return to Briardusk of Hilm where they came from initially. The Siphe Garra who lived their however, men, women and children, their faces grim and resigned, prepared to defend their new land to the last of them if necessary.


Amidst the preparations people began to ask...just where was the Sovereign Lord in their hour of need!






Another few hours later Hilm scouts returned to Sundance in a similar fashion reporting directly to Sir lance on the sudden appearance to the north east at the base of the mountains of a huge horde of creatures bearing a banner of a grey dragon on a black background.

A day after the ceremonies take place Acting Sovereign Nijau releases Princess Shay'kar from house arrest along with her General Ni'tok. The members of the Dark Guard who were to remain in the vicinity of the Princess for four years had been housed in a section of the city that had been cordoned off to provide them with some margin of independence.

Princess Shay'kar had returned to her training under her Generals watchful eye and within hours there were problems again with the General mocking the drills and routines the Princess was expected to undertake.

By late afternoon again Nijau and other ranked officers wer summoned to the battelgroups drill area where already a large crowd had gathered. Most of the battlgroup was there along with off duty members of several other groups.

Ninth members stapped back to allow Nijau and his officers, including Lady Daniella Stormhaven and Lady Jillian, a path to the edge of the arena.

In the arena General Ni'tok had a young ninth on his knees, pinned with a long staff. His face was battered and bloody and one arm hung limpy by his side. Nearby the Princess, paced back and forth obviously delighting in the spectacle she was creating. Even as the group stopped at the edge of the arena, a Fourth Rank overseeing the training session was demanding the general release the man, to no avail.

Silence decended over the area and both the general and the princess looked over at Nijau, the Generals face gleaming with obscene joy at the conflict he was causing. The Princess seemed pretty pleased with herself as well.

Nijau took in the scene camly then spoke loudly. "It seems there is only one way to do this General, Princess." He loosened his sword belt and handed it to Lady Daniella beside him. Next he cleared the low fence in a simple movement and strode towards the General who didnt seem sure what was going on. Nijau struck hard and fast, a heel to the Generals knee, the edge of one hand to his elbow holding the staff, another just below his armpit. The general roared in angry pain as his numb arm dropped the staff pinning the ninth and he reached for his sword with his off hand. Nijau struck again in a quick succession of blows, ribs, neck, chin, then around and knee, solar plexus, abdoman.

Within seconds the General was down moaning on the group trying to hold several areas at once. There was a loud shreik and Nijau grunted as the princess launched her own attack on his back. Several blows struck hard before Nijau rolled away and came to his feet and they faced off against each other.

The crowd barely spoke as they watched the spectacle before them. Nijau came in again low and fast, feet and fists moving quickly, the Princess parried, spun, ducked low and backflipped to escape the worst of it. Nijau drove in again, most of his blows were deflected or missed as the smaller faster princess danced and evaded his blows.

For several moments they traded blows, manouvered and tried to gain advantage over each other until finally Nijau caught the princess a glancing blow against her head which sent her reeling. He lunged forward and hit her hard on the chin, her head snapped back and she collapsed on the floor of the arena.

Nijau staggered breathing in deeply then wiped blood from his face from several blows the princess landed. He walked over to the edge of the arena and demanded his sword then walked back to the general and placed it against his neck.

"If you ever threaten one of my people again..." He stood and removed the blade then looked at the Fourth who stood there silently. "See that the general and the Princess are tended to and get back to training, any more problems, let me know."

In recent days almost a week after the announcement of Quintas's death in Golden and Castle Mask a druid called Phelicia, from Vale, reported movements of several groups of mercenaries through the southern forests of the Forest of Fog to the group of Adventurer/bounty hunters employed by the Baroness.

Unwilling at this time to cross into Rael lands to investigate in case they triggered another confrontation with Rael the group headed south to track down Quintas's contacts in Golden lands. The Druid offered to maintain a watch on the groups though and keep them informed.

Meanwhile a familiar face from Belinara seeking out Argali arrived in Seawatch fort. Honorary Hilm Captain Kromlek made his way along the road encountering a unit of soldiers claiming to have turned mercenary from Succession. Discussions with the soldiers concluded that the 'mercenaries' were tracking a group from Golden rumoured to have crossed into Rael lands and murdered a Rael citizen called Quintas.

Captain Kromlek denied any knowledge of the group and hurried south to Golden to warn Baroness Sefina of his findings. Scouts have been dispatched to warn the group of the possible threat.

Word filters back to Castle Mask that a well known slaver company led by a dwarf called Quintus the Tendril has been tracked and killed by a group of adventurers and bounty hunters employed by Baroness Sefina to deal with Saric Lemont.

The groups investigations led them to a farmlet north of Golden where many had been sold into slavery by some of Sarics people. The group led by Lor Captain of the Beacons Argali Trueaxe came upon Quintus just before he crossed into official Rael lands and dealt with the slaver without mercy.

Those captured by him were delivered to a Golden patrol to take back to Castle mask and also to report on Quintas's death. The search for Saric Lamont and his network continues.

For the next few days the three battlegroups of Ninth, their numbers reduced due to the injured and dead being dispatched back to Siphe Castle, worked to build fortifications along a stretch of group surrounding the faintly glowing red boulders of the fire giants. During the day their glow was barely evident but at night they bathed a large area in a soft dull red glow.

The battle groups worked quickly and effectively during this time, rotating through shifts in work details and sentry duties. Several of the leaders made their way back and forth between the border post and the main castle in that time for various reasons and duties to fulfill.

Finally, after a week two more battlegroups arrived to relieve the initial ones who marched back to the Castle for debriefing. A day after their arrival they were summoned to the main parade ground inside the castle in full uniform. Several of the Ninth were honoured with bravery awards for their deeds during the battle and a number promoted.

Amidst the promotions several of the Toranites serving in the Garra ranks were called forth and honoured as well with both Bravery medals and promotions to the Eighth battlegroups.

Once the ceremony was finished and those promoted reassigned the place returned to business as usual. Everyone eager for the impending return of their Sovereign Lord Jaedon Siphe within the next few days.

Word spreads quickly of the separate engagements against the strange Mist overriding the Roughlands of Hilm.

In the north grim battlegroups of Siphe Garra Ninth establish camps inside their lands where the dead and wounded can be properly cared for. The name and event on everyones lips being the fighting skills and bravery shown by Argali and the holy power possessed by Lady Daniella Stormhaven who, as the tales grow, almost singlehandedly held at bay all the shadows of the Pits with her glowing sword and holy Ankh of Toran. Truly a light in the darkness.

So too words of honour and respect are given for those many Siphe Garra and their Toranite allies who bravely fought the shadows of the mist.




Meanwhile, in the south, columns of Hilmite infantry and Toranite cavalry bear the bodies and wounded of their own encounter with the strange mist.

Sir Lance, having been caught up in Sundance handed over authority of the force to Captain Vrebel who led them north along with significant adventurer and mercenary support. On their way Voraxians led by Major Griff Silversand joined them.

But what they found was certainly not what they expected and after several engagements with creatures out of the mist they were set upon also by a shadowy dragon form. The battle raged for hours until night saw the combined forces close to rout. That was when Major Griff Silversand carried forth with a rousing speech sending what remained of his Red Axes against the dragon in a last ditch act of desperation. Boyed by the dwarves sacrifice and charge to glory Captain Vrebel rallied those still able to hold a weapon and joined the brave dwarves. At the end of the day it was Captain Vrebels blade that took down the dragon before its essence drifted back to the mist once more.

In Sundance, the city of Hilm that is taking a long time to get moving after the war, people begin having strange dreams at night. Children awaken from nightmares, adults prefer not to speak of what they see during the night.

All the while the huge bank of Mist covers the roughlands north of Sundance and south of the Siphe Principality, an ominous shadow.

On a ridge an undisclosed distance north of Sundance two Hilm scouts lie still observing the thick flowing mists that now cover much of the lands to the north that they can see rising to a height of at least a hundred feet.

The mists roil and twist in a manner suggestive of silvery silken sheets hanging in a wind but there is also something ominous in their intensity, ominous in the darker folds within the mist, and then there are the odd shapes, as if something presses against the edges of the mist trying to find a way out. Several times both of the scouts have thought they saw something more substantial in the midst and both times by the time they blinked and really looked they were gone.

As dusk began to slowly give way to night a chill coldness seeped towards the scouts position from the mist and then, suddenly, deeper into the thick layers a large shape moved, pushing the mist up and up, higher than the layers around it and slowly coalesced into a frightening apparition.

Both scouts lay rooted to the spot in abject terror as a creatures shape appeared in the mist, or was it the mist itself? Neither man could tell. To them it appeared as if a creature draped in Mist rose high above the landscape but in the backs of their minds it seemed the creature was the mist as well, but no one would believe them if they said that, or so they believed.

Mist flowed from the creature as it ascended but never dissipated from it and slowly it unfurled its wings to full extension, darkness and shadow draped it like clothing as it flew high then turned slowly and descended once more into the thick layer coating the Roughlands.

Both scouts drew back white faced and looked at each other to confirm what they had seen. Neither spoke, their hearts hammering in their chests until one, slightly braver than the other ventured to speak the dreaded truth.

"The shadow dragon himself."
