Character Development Quests (CDQ's) / Re: GCDQ's
« on: February 21, 2010, 02:48:51 pm »
Hi Spike,

Thanks for the question! It is my understanding that a GCDQ counts as a CDQ for everyone who participates in the GCDQ, because they are all working toward the development for the same objective and can all benefit from it. In a normal (single) CDQ, you can invite other people to help you, but you are the only one who will benefit from a successful result. This is why single CDQs count for only one person.

Because they involve an entire group, GCDQs take a little extra planning. However, the effect of having so many characters working together means that great things can be accomplished on a GCDQ as well, certainly beyond the scope of a normal CDQ.

I hope this helps you figure things out.

Ask A Gamemaster / Re: Elven druids and their bows.
« on: February 21, 2010, 02:32:38 pm »
Yep, a good question. But to my understanding, Guardian is indeed correct--it isn't that the bow is compound, necessarily, but the process of refinement and extra materials required to make it so. Natural or rustic longbows or shortbows made out of worked wood and a bowstring are acceptable, but refining the weapon with a good deal of worked metal and less "natural" parts makes it unacceptable for druids.

Thanks for the question!

Character Development Quests (CDQ's) / Re: CDQ for Dweeble Smallnose
« on: February 12, 2010, 06:15:14 pm »
Hi Verideth,

From what you've said, it sounds like the most appropriate course of action would be to start some roleplay, perhaps by writing a letter to an official and posting it in the "Rumor Has It" forum, which contains a lot of IC forum RP. If you found a GM who had time for a short interaction with a city official, this too would be okay, though obviously that hinges on catching a GM when they have time for a little impromptu RP. For now, I think that this can be handled without a CDQ likely, unless it was tied to a larger goal like .. oh, I don't know, the beautification of Port Hempstead after the tsunami.

Please also remember that Port Hempstead is undergoing a lot of rebuilding and changes right now, even if they are not always represented in game, due to the damage from when the tsunamis hit the city full on. If you wanted to ask someone about benches in Port Hempstead and what the state of things might be there right now, Pankoki might be a good person to get in touch with.

Hi Verideth,

What kind of result would you possibly be looking for from this? Do you want your character to be given permission to replace the benches in terms of RP? Are you asking to have the benches replaced mechanically with some other model in the module?

A little clarity in what you were thinking the letter writing might lead to would go a long way in sorting out what type of interaction would be best suited for this.

Thanks in advance for any additional info,

Ask A Gamemaster / Re: Metamagic
« on: February 08, 2010, 10:06:28 pm »
Lance's response is correct. You cannot use metamagic on the highest level of spell your character is able to cast, because metamagic raises the magic required to cast that spell.

For example, Jaelle can cast all 9 levels of sorcerer spells. She also has maximize spell. When she casts maximized spells, she can cast levels 1-6 through maximized spells. Casting a 6th level spell at maximized level uses up one of my regular 9th level spells for that day. If she were a wizard, she would have to prepare it at 9th level, because 6+3=9 and maximize adds 3 spell levels to the casting requirement.

For a metamagic feat that added only one level, I would be able to cast level 1-8 spells with that type of maximize.

Because bards only have 6 levels of bard-specific spells, you would never be able to use maximize, empower, extend or any other metamagic feats on a level six spell because the requirement would be higher than the level you can cast.

Hope this helps,
~Carillon

Thread once again updated and current. Anyone requesting a CDQ right now, please be advised there will certainly be some delay while I kill my current backlog again. If this is a concern for you, please feel free to contact me and I'll try and give you an estimate of wait time, though such things are notably imprecise due to the unpredictable nature of the world we live in. ;)

Cheers,

Ask A Gamemaster / Re: One more time with alignments...
« on: February 07, 2010, 11:40:25 pm »
Hi Steve,

Please see this post for our policy on a character permanently shifting from one alignment to another. As specified in the post, this will often be CDQ territory, but it depends on several factors, including character class and the alignments in question, and may not require a CDQ. However, this kind of major shift from one alignment to another does always require approval before you start to RP the new alignment. Characters should show only an -inclination- to shift, while staying within the reasonable bounds of their current alignment, until approved to do so.

For the other kind of alignment shifts, the little points that GMs can give out in response to player actions (let's call them alignment nudges, just to differentiate them, shall we?), these do not require a CDQ or any character approval process. The GMs give these out regularly at their discretion, based on actions or RP they observe and how much in keeping (or not in keeping) those actions are, given the PC's current alignments.

How often and what kind of shifts are most common as well as the manner in which they are given out varies from GM to GM. I can tell you that as a player, I've received small nudges toward lawful, good, chaos and evil, and have never submitted for an alignment change. As a GM, I've given out shifts toward lawful, chaos, good and evil on the same quest, albeit to different characters.

There's nothing necessarily wrong with receiving a nudge one way or another. These are often neither a reward nor a punishment, and merely a commentary on your actions. Assuming you are playing your alignment, they usually balance out. For example, I have a character who has received a number of good and evil small shifts for actions, but has had very little net movement and is still close to her original alignment. I've also had a good character consistently move further good. As a general rule, if you are within 0-5 points of your original alignment or have not moved away from your alignment (like an evil character going from 15 evil to 0 evil, or a good character traveling the other way), you are in good shape. Between 5 and 10 points, I'd start evaluating why I was getting those points and make sure I was sticking with my alignment, and possibly figure out something to nudge the character back toward a balanced picture of the approved alignment.

Again, alignment nudges should not necessarily be seen as either a reward or a punishment, and a point or two here is nothing to worry over, and more just a reflection that alignments can be fluid and characters can have good days and bad days, and gradually sway back and forth. What is cause for concern is if those points are accompanied by an OOC warning from a GM that the actions are very far out of what would be considered a good day or a bad day for that alignment, or if there is a consistent trend of alignment nudges in a direction away from the current alignment. At those points, it might be best to find a GM or a character approver to talk to, either to find out why the points were given and communicate with the GM about their reasoning and what actions would have been more in keeping with their alignment, or to discuss whether an application for a formal alignment shift might be warranted.

Hope this helps clarify things,
~Carillon

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Re: Item breakage or Item attuning
« on: February 02, 2010, 07:38:13 pm »
Just to reiterate, there is not going to be a breakage system in the NWN version of Layonara. I think this was stated pretty clearly above, so if you're stressing over NWN economics fitting a breakage system, take a breath! It isn't happening.

The MMO, as stated above, will have a breakage system. It will also have a number of other things, and likely an entirely different economic situation and/or crafting system, so I do not think it makes sense to stress about item breakage/damage for a crafting system or an economic system that has not yet been released in any detail. Let's just have a little trust that if people are putting the thought into having a system where items can be damaged and repaired, they are also aware of the impact that will have and that they have considered the overall balance picture, both for economics and for player fun. Until we see the big picture and how it all fits together, all worrying is going to result in is very little clarity ... and possibly an ulcer or a headache!

Layonara Server / Re: Layonara Team Applications Now Open!
« on: January 31, 2010, 02:28:36 pm »
Just a reminder that Team applications will close at 5 pm PST today. (Approximately 5.5 hours from the time of this post)

Masterjack has contacted the Team and has Leanthar's permission to submit an application in March when he returns from a work assignment, as he is currently not able to submit an application and commit to the position until then. (The above is shared because we try to be as transparent in this process as possible).

All qualified applicants will be contacted some time after applications close tonight for an interview. We'll try to get the interviews done within a week.

Good luck to all applicants!

Ask A Gamemaster / Re: Graceful Plea or Character Submission?
« on: January 26, 2010, 01:14:40 pm »
Because you are talking about extensive character development issues, roleplay and deity/dogma/lore conflicts, this should be submitted to Character Submisssions rather than Grievances/Disputes/Reimbursements. The latter is for more mechanical things. Unless it is a very simple change such as switching out a feat or moving around an attribute point, the Grievances/Disputes forum often works under the Character Submission forum with rebuilds, restarts and character modifications anyway.

Hope this answers your question. I'll hold off any further commentary until you have a chance to think things over and post in Character Submissions if you like.

Regards,
~Carillon

General Discussion / Re: Rangers
« on: January 26, 2010, 12:26:43 am »
I have all the info on the Wolfswood Ranger Corps. I was looking at the organizational structure not too long ago, and considering the structure of the Corps and a way to allow lower-level characters to participate without invalidating the accomplishments of players in the past. Hold tight and I'll see if I can dig up my notes and see if there's any additional info I can share to help clarify this.

Also, for those curious about level/time requirements, please consider that to have a CDQ to join the Wolfswood Corp, a character would have to be either level 10 or to have been active in game for 3 months. This is the requirement for all non-PrC CDQs. I'm not saying it's necessarily perfect in this case, but it does do a little to balance things out, and to provide a path for both characters who level quickly and for those characters who are not as interested in leveling but still want to be active in the world and to contribute in significant ways.

Happy birthday! On a whim, I wondered what a Lightly Frosted birthday cake would look like. I typed it into google, and got ...

Considering the recipe used the phrase "Glued together with frosting", I am not sure Google really understood the term "lightly frosted"! However, I was amused enough to share anyway.

Happy birthday, y'old pirate you.

Hey Hellblazer,

If what you mean is the links within the document itself, see this, from my original post above:

Hello all,

It was long past due for an update to our public version of the GM primer, so here it is! The public version of the primer is made so that people can steal a glimpse at what lies on the other side of the game client and get a taste of what GMing might be like, either just for their own curiosity and understanding, or because they feel they might be interested in being a GM. (And coincidentally, if you are interested, applications are currently open here until January 31st 2010!)

Like the original version of the public GM primer, we've removed the GM passwords, details on NPCs and plot, and a few other things. However, we've tried to leave a lot of it in, and to share as much info as we can. One thing that you will notice is that you can't click on a lot of the links. This doesn't mean they are broken--just that they are in a forum to which non-GMs do not have access.

The file is currently in .rar form as there have been quite a few updates and added content since the original public version was released, and the .pdf is now too big to post! You will need a program like WinRAR or 7Zip to unzip it.

If there are any questions or comments, I can be contacted at carillon@layonara.com

Regards,
~Carillon
