Layonara Server / New Project Writer member / welcome Link092
« on: April 10, 2010, 02:01:18 pm »
As mentioned in another  thread, people who want to join us as Project Writer can contact me  directly.

If I think I can work with you (based on my perception of you on  forums/in game as well as after talking to you) I'll give you an  assignment to evaluate your creativity and writing skills.

If that assignment is successfully completed and we like what we read,  and you are willing to sign an Author-Publisher Agreement with us then we'll bring you in.

Link092 successfully applied, wrote a very nice myth and I'm happy to welcome him to  the Writing Team.

Layonara Server / Update coming soon! New files required!
« on: April 01, 2010, 11:09:40 pm »
I can't say exactly when (as it all depends on what I decide to do about a couple of things) but sometime soon, there will be an update coming which will require everyone to download updated TLK and HAK files.

I've put them up on the server for download, so everyone can get a jump on the update. These new files will not interfere with anyone playing before the update, so you are welcome to download them and expand them into the proper folders:

Updated "control" HAK:
http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layo_controlv3r9.rar

Updated TLK file:
http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layonara_v23.rar

Happy Downloading!

General Discussion / You Will Be Missed
« on: March 16, 2010, 08:09:54 pm »
Jonathan Selmek aka Daren Valhaikor aka poohbear383340 died this morning in a fatal car crash.

He was a great roleplayer and really knew how to throw you a curve. His characters were well known and quite diverse from each other.

You will be sorely missed.

General Discussion / Stepping Down from GM'ing
« on: February 27, 2010, 12:45:15 am »
Well folks, it has come that time for me to step down from being a GM. Thanks to L and the team for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of the team.

I have been on this server for over five years now and GM'ed for the last year or so of it between deployments. It was definitely interesting to see how the server operated behind the curtain.

I appreciate all the fun that I had while serving the server. I enjoyed my time helping players, running impromptu quests (my favorite by far), and bringing the world alive by possessing NPCs (especially animals), changing spawns, and keeping players on their toes. There are truly fantastic RP'ers in our community and it is constant. There is almost always someone RPing in some form or fashion all of the time. There are different styles and different levels, thank you for the education from that side of the field.

Thanks again,
twidget

General Discussion / G'orks Event
« on: January 07, 2010, 01:10:36 pm »
*notes posted around some of more dodgy inns and taverns accross the continents*

'A warrior takes responsibility for his acts, for the most trivial of acts. An average man acts out his thoughts, and never takes responsibility for what he does.'

Which one of the two do you fall under?

Recruiting brave, loyal men, or women that are capable of performing certain tasks. Want to show you're worth the true? Sign up and prove it.

Skills you may want to consider having before signing up, a combination of the following is the most desirable of candidates:

- Stealth - Spells like invisibility only accepted if you are silent on your feet as well.

- Good at Trapping Both arming, and disarming - (bring your own traps, they will not be supplied, but will be beneficial).

- Good with locks A wide range of mechanism knowledge preferable.

- Keen Eyes & Ears Possibly one of the more important skills to have for the first few tasks.

- Combat Training Only minor skill required at this time - However the better you are the more likely you will be chosen.

- Professionalism Don't step out of line, Don't try to be smart with words. Be respectful to those you will be working with. Failure on this single point will result in a prolonged painful exit.

Any questions feel free to post below or PM me. If you're interested in taking part and don't fit the current roles please do PM me anyway, I might find some use somewhere!

Rumour Has It / Red Lights Cavern is Barricaded!
« on: January 07, 2010, 12:14:25 am »
//Due to player actions (impromptu quest) and unresolved/unsolved mysteries, the Red Lights are barricaded. I do want this to be resolved quickly so not to tie up an area, so I plan on running the continuation on Friday at about 7pm PST.

//This thread can be used by the current participants to RP gathering up a party to get to the heart of the matter.

Poetic License / That's Layo! (A song.)
« on: January 05, 2010, 02:22:56 am »
*The crowd is chattering as the musicians - a group of archers on the strings (what with their skill with the bow), a group of fighters on percussion (because hitting things with other things is their schtick), a group of Toranites on brass (because they can occasionally be blowhards.. *innocently*), and a group of druids on woodwinds (because..  well..  wood.  And wind, for that matter) - take their seats.  A wizard wearing black robes made from malar hide, complete with the panther's slender tail, and a white tunic comes out with a slender wand in hand.  Resplendant in his tux with tails, he taps the podium, and begins to play.  The bardic vocalists begin to sing..*

When you wander across continents,
To fetch apples for a pie;
No self-preservation sense,
Just respawning if you die;
With your armour dinged with many dents,
And a twinkle in your eye;
And you then recall just why, my gents,  ("And ladies!" interposes one halfling bardess..  the crowd laughs.)
You first gave Layo a try!

Whether tanning hides,
Or slaying orcs,
Or finding old
Rusty pitchforks,
Or reinventing
Gnomish sporks,
Or whatever else you do...

As you gather treasure,
Gems and gold,
Or face those villains,
Brave and bold,
Or defeating some
Slime, ooze, or mold,
We put forward this as true...

That's Layonara!  Layonara!  Layonara!
Through and through!

*A bow.  Thundrous applause.  Enterprising food crafters sell slices of apple pie to the crowd, and are mobbed with a veritable swarm of halflings.  Much like pirrahna can skeletonize a cow in under a minute, the pie seems to vanish all but instantaneously, leaving the vendors bewhildered, and the poorer for the loss of pie.  Alas.  Now they have to walk halfway across the world if they want to make another...*

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Lower all HP, AC and AB's for creatures
« on: December 11, 2009, 11:38:48 pm »
I want to be able to solo more with my fighter, but the creatures have too many HP, AC and too large of an AB to make it possible.  Can we add some CR-30+ things that fighters can get as much XP and loot for like mages, bards, and clerics can by themselves?  It's only fair.  Also, we may be able to just make the damage on weapons incredibly better based on pure fighter, barbarian, and weapon master levels so that melee classes have a chance to do things on their own -- that way the extra weapon damage will not apply to cleric or paladin levels.

As an alternative, we can also raise the magic immunity or saves of all creatures and justify it with natural selection and breeding due to overkilling the species by magic users.

Rumour Has It / A Strange Legendary Meeting
« on: December 01, 2009, 11:49:37 pm »
The buzz is high in Leringard as the Tempest is seen speaking to the clergy upon the Shrine of Gales, the temple of Mist in the city. However, such an event, though uncommon is not entirely foreign.

What is foreign is not long after, the presence of a Sea Elf within the heavily Mist aligned town. From the rumors, it is a high ranking priestess, a Naulti of Shindaleria that walks alongside a golden-haired halfling. The sea elf receives every glare and insult in existence, and many new creative ones. The halfling at her side however is a more familiar figure, known as Bianca Longbelly, one of the nine Naves of Ilsare, a prominent figure in the faith.

The two make their way to the Mist temple island and meet privately with the Tempest. What is discussed between them is unknown. It is clear that the jovial halfling is there to keep the peace and this she manages.

After a stressful meeting, the sea elf and the halfling leave the shrine and part from the tense city. Rumors abound of what happened and many wild stories are being spun around it.

General Discussion / Question in reference to Public Slayings
« on: November 30, 2009, 05:27:49 pm »
After attending the Beheading of Steel, it brought up some questions I hope that can be answered for me.  Now I understand that we try to be as realistic as possible within the boundaries of the game mechanics and some things are quite difficult to do, but I do not understand why we go through some actions.

Case in Point: Steel's Execution.  Now, he did something bad and had his head temporarily removed.  Then banned from the city for a period of time. Now if I have this right ... If I had an evil character I could run rampant, killing, stealing, etc. and run off ... if I am about to get captured, I provoke them into killing me, zip I get taken off to the nearest bindstone and continue the rampage.  I get caught ... I kill myself and zip I get taken off to the nearest bindstone and continue the rampage. Of course the dance with the Soul Mother is on my shoulders, but such is the life of a thief/murderer.  So with Steels sentence ... why even go through with killing him and setting him free?  So what if he gets caught again ... he loses a limb or whatever ... Kill yourself/get killed and zip ... off to the Bindstone ... a new man.  I am surprised that the land is not crawling with such evil doers already with this system.  So, If you know a person executed is going to the bindstone and thus whole once more, why behead/sever limbs at all? All the populace knows of the bindstone and their abilities.

Now, I am not looking to to have Steel permed (1st he is a friend) I am just curious as to why things are done in this manner and the thoughts behind such a rule (your escape clause).  Not only is it not realistic, but its not logical either.  A far cry from it.

If you are going to remove a limb you can have the player fix the clothing/armor to make it hidden/pegged/whatever, but a death?  Unsure outside of having a SS removed. Jailed (Character is unused for a certain period of time, hope you got a backup), these are options that I can think of.  I'm sure there are more, but I am really looking for answers.

Not ranting or creating a flame thread, just does not understand why.
((Looking for DM answers here, but other thoughts from regular players are welcome as well. Yes, DM's are regular players too, but I would like official answers, thank you.))

Important Layonara Announcements / Immediate Maintenance
« on: November 28, 2009, 01:25:38 am »
Greetings everyone,

There is a hardware issue with one of the Layonara servers and at this time. In order to mitigate the random downtime of the forums; we're disabling the LORE character updates for a few days.

As well, at some time during the next two/three days the entire layonara.com domain will be taken offline for general maintenance reasons. This downtime will last anywhere from a few hours to possibly more and there's no way to forecast this accurately.

These things have nothing to do with the MMO development and there are no hidden announcements here. About the only thing that's related to the MMO with all of this is that we've been so busy working on the MMO that we haven't had the time to do the needed housecleaning that's now in a state we cannot ignore.

Nothing "bad", just need to make things "right" again.

So, just to clarify, the following services will be completely offline at some point in the next few days and you should all rest assured we're going to try and minimize the downtime as best we can.

  • The World of Layonara
  • forums.layonara.com
  • irc.layonara.com
  • devlog.layonara.com
  • lore.layonara.com
  • NwN Server (xora.layonara.com)
  • and any other service layonara.com provides that I've failed to mention in the above...

Currently the only planned means of official communication regarding status updates during the outage is via twitter.

Please stay tuned.

Rumour Has It / A Madman sings at the Docks of Hempstead
« on: November 27, 2009, 06:26:17 pm »
*A strange man dressed in tuxedo, executioner's mask and feathered hat wails forth a tempest of song from the shores of Hempstead.  He sings of death, destruction, courage, and in facing the storm.  He sings to the sea monsters and dead drowned gods of old, the elves of the deep and the very barnacles clinging tot he husks of shattered ships.  Persevere.  Endure.  Fight!  His fingers spark into a magical fire across the fretboard as he frantically pumps out chords of discord, masterfully bringing a sense of godlike to the impending, looming doom of what is to come.  Between sets he urges the crowds to run, flee... the second wav is coming.  Go inland, climb the mountains and wait it out.  And for those with will, stay to face the carnage that is to come.  Raise arms and battle these beasts of the sea.  Krakken, Aboleth, dread beings long forgotten beneath the waves.  They come for us all, meet them. Slay them!  A few may recognize him as one of the number who evacuated many citizens in the first wave, and who in a fit of madness, tied himself to a palm tree to meet the first wave of the tsunami.*

Important Layonara Announcements / Forum Outages
« on: November 27, 2009, 09:28:37 am »
Hello everyone!

Over the past few days the forums have been seeing a little more stress than normal and as such there have been intermittent issues and outages. This is not necessarily due to anything we can or can't talk about publicly at this time.

We do sincerely apologize for any inconvenience these problems may be causing and we would like to reassure you all that we're doing our best to balance the workloads and keep things running at status quo.

Layonara is going through some rather interesting growth over the next few months and so we can only ask for everyone to please bear with us as we all traverse these new waters.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

-- The Management.

Howdy folks!

I just wanted to let folks know that I might be out of the loop for a few days while I try to get my dorm internet back.  I had to change rooms and now the network is giving me a hard time about having 2 registered IP addresses.  So I might be gone a week.  I would have liked to have gotten more involved with the recent messes that have occurred but...  I can't atm.  But will try to soon.

Don't miss me too much ;)
