    Books by forgotten realms
    « on: September 30, 2005, 05:20:00 am »
I've wanted to read some of these books, but I don't know where to start. Could any of you tell me which book series to start from?

    Oh. Wow.

There are so many FR books to read, and they are all great.

Almost anything by R.A. Salvatore is awesome, including all his Drizzt novels as well as his Cleric Quintet series.

Umm...I have read so many I have forgotten alot of them..heh.

I believe there is a Harper series...it was good if I recall.

Hmm..that should get you started. :)

Well, the Dark Elf trilogy really gives you a good background on Drizz't. If you're looking for something above ground (heh) Then I'd try the earlier Elminster novels, or the Knights of Myth Drannor books.

Personally, if I were going to start, I'd start with a bang. The biggest, most impacting event in Forgotten Realms was the Time of Troubles. You go from one end of Faerun to the other, meet tons of famous character, and you'll read about how the current state of affairs in Faerun started. The 3 books are Shadowdale, Tantras, and Waterdeep. You can find them in paperback anywhere, and they're one heck of a good read.

NOTE: Stay away from Elminster in Hell until you know ALOT about Forgotten Realms...you'll just get confused.

Marv's list of truly great Forgotten Realms books:
      Shadowdale
      Tantras
      Waterdeep
Crucible: Trial of Cyric the Mad (my favorite)
      Dark Elf Trilogy
      The Cleric's Quintet
The Fall of Myth Drannor (somewhat hard to find...amazon should have it)

      Enjoy:)

      Marv.....now with more Chocolate Chips!

The "Realms of ______"  series is a great place to start if you want to test a whole lotta authors at once.  They have Realms of Shadow, Realms of the Underdark, Realms of Infamy, Realms of Valor and Realms of Magic.  Each one is a series of short stories by all the major authors (Salvatore, Cunningham, Greenwood, Thomsen, Moore , etc.) all focused on a subject or theme from Forgotten Realms.

Elaine Cunningham is by far one of the more talented authors. At the moment I'm reading the Counselors & Kings trilogy. Good reading and you don't have to know anything about FR before you start reading it.

EDIT: My signature are quotes from the second book by the way.

The Icewind Dale Trilogy (Salvatore) is really good.  It encompasses the followibg books:
      The Crystal Shard
      Streams of Silver
      The Halfling's Gem

yes, the Icewind Dale trilogy is the set of books that introduced Drizzt Do'Urden to the world... now there are tons of books with or about him.

If you're going to start reading the Drizzt books, read the icewind dale trilogy before reading the dark elf trilogy

          storyline chronologically the trilogies go:

          Dark elf Trilogy
          Icewind dale trilogy
I forget what the third one is called trilogy

But the Icewind dale trillogy was written first and theres a bit of inconsistency and references to stuff you wont know about if you read the dark elf first.

He's right...I read the entire Elminster series, and by the end, I had no idea what was going on....But, what's the harper series called? I'd like to get it (don't have much good reading these days),

The third series was "Legacy of the Drow" which contained "The Legacy", "Starlass Nights", "Siege of Darkness", and "Passage to Dawn"
Oh then the fourth series which is my favorite. "Paths of Darkness". Which has "The Silent Blade", "The Spine of the World", "Servent of the Shard", and "The Sword Coast".
