Suggestion on how to improve the customization crafting forge
« on: February 09, 2007, 08:28:27 am »
Alright, we all know how the forge has the color changing option... but how many really use it?
Technically it's far more easier to just run to the shop and buy a dye to apply via the items abilities... which is what everyone does.

However, via the forge we have "access" to the new colours, the ones Bioware added sometime ago that are 50 times more pretty than the old ones (The greens look better, the reds... everything! not to mention the metalic dyes are great)

We cannot dye with them however because the game lacks the item dyes for them - which do not excist.

So I was thinking... why not remove the dye requirement from the forge? it will still be a slow alternative to buying the dyes themselves... the price difference is not really that big (10 coins perhaps, but it evens out because dyes have charges) it will only mean reducing some code rather than increasing it and adding new items.
Roleplay wise.. well, I don't see how a novice crafter can take an armor and change its appearance all by himself anyway - so there's not much to it... the colours might as well just pop out of nowhere, we just like looking cool  8)

So... whaddya think?

I agree.

More color = better.

And not like it's ever about money when it comes to fashion.

Why not a Craft Armor check with a 5-10 gold fee attached to dying armor?

I agree, all of the colors in the forge are absolutely awesome. It'd add more diversity, and I think I saw this red I liked....

Though at the same time I know I've seen characters go around in pure white and pure black, How did they get the customization forge to do that?

I think they have to be given by a GM, but I haven't seen pure white in a while. Pure black I see on occassion, but it's all on old armors.

Are you really sure you are seeing people walking around in pure white?

According to Dorganath, pure white isn't... um... white, but rather the complete lack of color on the screen. The unrealistic sort of white... :P

So, that was the reason given why those two dyes (white and black) have been removed from the shop. :)

Edit: Some clothes seem to display a much "whiter" light gray than other clothes. For example, Alleina's robes she tend to walk around with are most probably considered white by 99% of the population. But, on the other hand... If you use the same dyes on the original NWN clothes (the ones that aren't robes), you will see a greyish color.

Yes Im sure it was pure white and not the bug. I know Sa'kura's wedding dress was pure white and I think Cel and Eldarwen have things that are Pure Black unless I'm mistaken...But the GMs can do the special colors? Cool.

As I understood it, the pure white and the pure black dyes have been IG before, but was removed later because of the silly/unrealistic look on it.

So, either:

1. Someone have items with that dye, or even better, the dye itself, from before (old players might indeed has those!).
2. A DM gave that dye to the person for some reason (wedding dress would be a good reason! :) ).

Edit: Unless the DM uses the toolset, I don't believe even them can make an item to one of the "new" colors. Or rather... they can only do that if there are some specific script (read: item) for that job, which I doubt exist because of the lack of need. :P

The pure white for Sa'kura' wedding dress was there because I used the base item called 'wedding dress' or what not, which I found in the Freelancers store room, so I bought it from the guild to make it. It had the pure white set as its base colour.

Pure white is the only real color that looks funky in any amount.  Reflective metallics look terrible as well if used on anything but thin metal segments.  Pure black actually looks like a nice black velvet if used in small doses.

I understand the concern with the people running about sporting a darth vader look...

That said... isn't there a replacement erf for this on the vault with all the new dye types in their nice little deceptive colored bottles?

A tip for anyone who wants to make the current metallic colours look better: turn enviorment mapping on creatures off... it makes them look MUCH better.

As for an Erf of all the dyes...  I searched the vault and found this: http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Prefabs.Detail&id=786

However, from messing around with the toolset using Layos haks.. I believe layo uses a different base item item for dyes and those would not work with layos :P

I'll go ahead and chip in that I'd like to see the need for dyes removed from the game. Add a GP cost, sure, but pretty please don't make the DC too high (if you can control that).

Yeah.. IMO the DC isn't even needed because people simply do part by part (thus making the DC no higher than 10)...
it's just annoying to re-do it when you fail.

The DC gets higher, even for single parts, as the value of the item being customized goes up.

Try modifying the torso of a mithril full plate alone. It's pretty high DC already.

Even a "not so very special" thing like Lesser Lady's Gift has very high DC.

I can't remember the exact number for the moment, but I think it was 18-ish or maybe even 20+...
