up to and including (if possible) eliminating "take 20" on trap setting ("take 10" may be acceptable if the conditions warrant).

I'd be against this...don't forget those rogues who take the Rogues Feat 'Skill Mastery' specifically to get an automatic 'take 20'.

I suppose one of the things that a 'three trap' limit would represent is the time and preparation to actually prepare the area for the trap, assemble and arm it.  Its something that isn't represented at all in NWN whereas in actuality it would take probably a considerable period of time to actually set three traps.

As we can't actually increase the time it takes for a rogue to set a trap to reflect this, then this would seem to be another valid way for this limitation to manifest itself in the game.  (ie: convert the time taken to set a number of traps to the amount that can be set within a reasonable period of time)

To illustrate this look at what would have to be done to set a basic 'Spike Trap'.

1.  Find a suitable area to set the trap - This I suppose is obvious, the ground/wall/ceiling would have to be firm enough to support the completed trap.  Not only that but it'd have to also keep it steady when the trap 'fires' as well, to ensure that the spikes all travel in the desired direction, at the velocity required to penetrate armour and flesh.  If the trap was buried in loose sand for instance, then when the spikes fire they might fly out all over the place as the sand liquefies due to the shock waves travelling through it.  Perhaps missing the creature completely or even hitting party members.  Also the spikes may not have enough force to penetrate armour due to the sand absorbing some of the kenetic energy of the spikes.

2. Prepare the area - The area would then have to be prepared.  You'd need a clean flat surface to actually assemble the trap and to make sure you never lost that inevitable small vital componant that ony seems to exist in order to get lost.  You'd need to drill holes for spikes, darts, flasks of chemicals etc.  You'd need to string up any wires you needed and conceal them as well.

3.  Assemble the trap - The trap would than have to be assembled from the already prepared componant parts.  I've always seen traps on a PC as being carried 'Flat Pack' style for ease of carrying.  So you'd have to get all the bits out, making sure they're not damaged and if they are replacing them.  Then actually assembling the trap itself, which would take time, especially if you need to test parts of it as you go.  Hopefully you won't lose parts of the trap but don't forget it could be a dark dank dungeon with many powerful creatures just around the corner, so you'll be tense and stressed, consequently mistakes are almost certain to happen.

4.  Conceal the trap - Obviously the trap must be hidden otherwise no one will go near it (unless they're a dwarf :) ).  This means scouring the area for debris that can be used for concealment, something you couldn't  really prepare  for beforehand as the items used would  have to fit in with the area.

All this would take time.  Multiply all that by three and suddenly you have a lot of time.  So a three trap limit doesn't seem like a bad suggestion to me :)

I think that 'Horrid Wilting' should be renamed to 'Bilvikki's Laundry Spell' :)

Just found another review:

Its funny though, although it says that mods are not compatible with NWN (something we all knew), you can import scripts and conversations from the original.  I didn't realise that.

Hmm is this still happening?  It sounds to me very much like the problem that Buppi, one of my characters used to have when sailing into Karthy.

Logs in
Load Screen is Displayed
Load Bar makes its much anticipated crawl across the screen
Gets about 4/5th's of the way across and pauses
Then game crashes.

If I remember rightly I had to be moved by Orth whilst I was logged off and then I just had to avoid Karthy.

A terrible day a terrible day...I bought my first set of chainmail armour.  I must say I do look rather impressive whilst wearing it, but its awful for the casting of arcane spells.  I spent four hours casting one spell after another yet was unable to complete one spell sucessfully.  I am so dispirited...maybe if a try to focus on my scimitar more.  Perhaps that will help...I am soooo depressed.

Spellswords...Spellswords!!!  Thats the name of those warriors I mentioned in my previous entry.  If I recall accurately they are a type of warrior who concentrate on their weapons as the focus of their spells.  The advantage of this is that they don't have to make all the gestures that a spell requires and so consequently can ignore the inhibiting effect of their armours.  I must look into this further...in the meantime I shall continue to practise casting whilst fully armoured, hopefully I shall improve with time and effort...nay I shall improve.

I sit here writing and suffering terribly, my first encounters with the goblins did not go exactly to plan.  I approached the foe, observed him carefully, calculated his strengths and weaknesses and then...he attacked me!!! I told him repeatedly that I hadn't finished my calculations, but he wouldn't listen!!  It was awful, I was trying to write down my findings so that I could use them to calculate a grand stratagem which would inevitably lead to the foul creatures defeat...but he wouldn't stop!!  He kept hitting me with a long wickedly sharp dagger.  In the end I took my weapon and struck him with it...but he wouldn't keep still!!!  So I kept missing!!!  I decided that a withdrawal was in order but the creature followed me, not once letting up his rude hostilities.  So I tried to cast a spell of healing and was almost sucessful, but unfortunately my leather armour, being rather new and stiff, prevented me completing the required gestures that the spell required.  I fell to the ground in agonising pain and bleeding from a thousand...yes a thousand wounds!!!!  Darkness took me but somehow I awoke back in Hlint.  I must practice casting spells in armour, obviously that is my only weakpoint.  I recall reading about a sort of warrior who are also adepts in the arcane sciences...now what were they called?...no matter I am tired and must rest.

General Discussion / Re: Characters, NWN2 and thoughts
« on: September 19, 2006, 04:27:44 pm »
I know that we're all excited about the imminate release of NWN2 but you know to be honest I have mixed thoughts about the possibility of changing over to NWN2.

On the one hand there has been so much customisation done in Layo, that will have to be redone if it can be redone at all.  I keep hearing rumours that NWN2 will not be able to handle as much as the original but whether that is true or not, I just don't know.  Even if we do change it will probably be a long time until we get back to the level we're at now.  It doesn't seem that it will support MAC or Linux, something which will affect a significant proportion of the NWN communty as well as certain people in Layonara as well.

On the other hand there will be better graphics, although that doesn't really concern me as much and in fact it may cause a problem with people who don't have good graphics cards or less powerful systems.  However one thing that does excite me about the new game is the changes to skills, feats and classes, I'm not talking about PRC classes but the orginal core classes.  For example the changes to the bard song and the change that allows druids to sacrifice spells for summons in the same way that clerics can for healing, as well as many other probable changes.  I still wonder how they are going to implement 'tumble' for instance will it be automatic as it is now, or will you actually be able to tumble?  Have to wait and see I suppose.  I expect that there will be new crafting skills as well, how will we intergrate these into Layonara's crafting system if in fact we do.

There are lots of questions and very few answers and to be honest given the downsides as well as the benefits of the new game, will it add to Layonara or diminish it?  Although unfortunately I'm sure that one of the things that future players will take into consideration  when thinking of joining Layonara will be whether it runs NWN2 or not.
