Also don't forget you can't counterspell inate creature abilities and I think that the Kenu invisiblity is an inate ability, although I concur with what Dorg and Rayenoir say about the other spells.

The Drow openly display themselves in town, metagaming the knowledge that the NPCs are not going to do anything, and metagaming the knowledge that no other character can really do anything to them because we have no PvP. Garent won't attack, Vale will trust them with letters, the vendors will sell them anything, and they can scoff in the face of a huge mob and stand fast in town, making silly faces until the mob decides that the metagaming Drow isn't fun any more. Since there is no way for a player to know how a given Drow will react, and far too many fall back on the metagaming, it's just not worth the effort to confront them, or the Goblins or Orcs or Half Giants or anyone else. Yes, it would be wonderful if the players of Drow would start having their characters act like Drow "should" on the surface, and it would be great if other characters would react appropriately, but I don't see that happening any time soon

I agree with this too, to a certain extent anyway...I think it might be less of a problem with Hlint which is a self confessed 'adventurers town' drawing all sorts of races seeking adventure.  So its always had its share of monster races albeit a small share.  Obviously these races will draw antagonism and hostility towards themselves but less so than in other towns and cities in the world, or so it seems to me.  I remember when I first made Bilvikki, one of the main reasons I chose the school of illusion for his specialist school of magic, was that I thought he'd use illusion extensively just to survive in a non goblin town.  Of course most of the illusion spells in the PnP spellbook are just not available in NWN so it was just a token effort in the end.  But if the game supported spells like 'disguse self' for instance, I don't think many other players would know that, he was in fact a goblin.  Of course now he's been in Hlint for a very long time and not only that he's an acomplished wizard to boot so he's well known to the authorites.  I still mourn the fact though that he can't use his spell school in the way I originally hoped.  But he still does generate hostility and suspicion from other players, even now and thats all to the good.

What I'm really trying to say that there are limits to NWN which wouldn't be there in a PnP game and so some allowance has to made for that. However this doesn't mean that monster races should be ignored and treated as other races, rather people should treat them fully IC. I like the idea mentioned above though about the drow and alignments and I think that would make the drow a much more interesting race to play.

I would also like to point out though that it can be difficult to play a character who does have a deep prejudice to another race. I once had a Svirfneblin who literally hated drow and showed it every time he met one, years of persecution by them, death of his kin by them etc. He was a great character one I did like to play but I dropped him after it became apparent that he was causing too many problems for people, not IC within the game, but in RL and this was reflected in the forums.

eek...please don't remove invisibility. Bil would be naked without it :(

Besides to be honest their arn't many illusion spells in the NWN spellbook, especially ones that are as useful as invisibility. Illusionists would suffer greatly from such a loss. Mind you if it was made a spell that could only be cast by an experienced illusionist...well that might be different :)

Its worse if you are a druid and are fighting in another shape, because you can't use bandages or targetable potions to heal yourself.  If you change out of animal shape you die.

I'd like resubmit Bilvikki for WL now that I'm back in the world.  Nothing has changed from my original submission above.  Sorry about disappearing for so long but it was due to something I'm not comfortable talking about on the public forums.

Thanks again.

Bilvikki is an illusionist...useful for a goblin trying to survive in a hostile big city, but he's also a scavenger of spells and will use anything as long as it works (which is probably typical behaviour for a goblin).  The only exception to that is necromancy, but not the whole spell school though, he often uses 'Finger of Death' for instance.  However he's terrified of undeath so would probably run screaming in fear if he ever called anything up :)

Heh...what was the name of that god in SOU?  The one whose followers lived in the desert?  The god who never actually did anything?  It might be fun having a cleric who followed a similar sort of god, one who didn't actually exist.  Of course the said cleric wouldn't be able to use any of his powers but his excuse could be something on the lines of the god was above all that or wanted us to sort out our own problems etc.

Might be fun especially if he was a evangelical type of fellow :)

Layonara Server / RE: Quest GM Applications are now open!

• List any DM/GM experience that you have and when the last time you performed this function.

I didn't have much DM experience before joining Layonara, although I did run a few adventures of varing length when I was in
my teens...so long ago now :).  As you know I was a DM here a year ago before I had to step down after 6 months due to real life issues, whilst I was a DM I did run several games including a few spontaneous ones.

• Have you GM’d using NwN? If so please list for what world(s)/module(s) and for how long.

Yes I have used the NwN DM client before, in Layonara for around 6 months.

• Describe why you want to be a GM in Layonara.

I first came to Layonara shortly after HOTU came out, and I was looking for an online DnD game which gave the same experience and atmosphere of the PnP game that I'd enjoyed so much as a teenager.  I didn't really know what to expect, and the first place I visited was Layonara...it vastly exceeded my expectations and before long I was completely immersed in the game world   In fact I spent so much time here I never managed to play HOTU...something I still haven't achieved.  Essentially I wanted to give something back and add, in however small a way, something to the story of Layonara.  I also wanted to gain more experience in DnD as a DM and to write and develop 'interesting' quest stories.  These reasons still stand and I think, matter even more to me now.

• Describe what Quest GM’ing means to you in Layonara. What do you think will be the outcome if you are chosen to be on the team?

A big attraction of Quests to me are the storylines, and how these are developed and returned to over time.  There have been some great storylines in Layonara and many have been revisited again and again, either directly or indirectly.  I also like to see the PC characters in the game relating these stories as if they were part of their personal history, something which happens often in Layo.  To me this is one of the big attractions of being a DM; being able to add to the 'life' of the characters in the gameworld.   Giving them histories and perhaps influencing their future development and choices, through quests.  I also think that one of the responsibilities of a DM is to let the PC's have fun.  Fun with their characters and the situations they find themselves caught up in.  I know personally, that sometimes my characters have often suprised me with their actions and responses, when caught up in new  situations (hope that doesn't sound too weird :)).  Its always a joy to behold, when a character does something unexpected yet fully consistant with their personality, in response to a new situation.  So to me the challenge of running a quest comes in two main parts, firstly writing an engaging storyline that can interest and involve all players and stand 'the test of time', as it were.  But also having to balance it with all the different aspects of play so that there's something in it for everyone's character to engage with, in RL as well as IC.  If I'm chosen to be a DM this is the sort of quest I hope to run.

• How long have you been a member of Layonara? You need to have been active in the community for at least four months.

I've been a member for a few years, I'm not exactly sure of the date that I actually joined.  I know it was shortly after I bought HOTU, and I'm certain that I bought it as soon as it was available for sale in the UK, so its around then.  I know I haven't been very active in the community for the past 5 months or so, I have been in game, just not very often.  Without going into too many details in a public forum, its been for RL reasons which I can explain in the interview if I get that far :)

• Do you wish to be a part time or full time Quest GM?

I'd like to be a part time DM, to start with anyway :)

Be sure to submit an example quest to Leanthar in a PM.

On its way :)
