Dark Elves VS Drow
« on: August 13, 2011, 12:52:41 pm »
Question as to what the dark elves use, directed towards whoever has knowledge about the official Layo standpoint on this.. if there is one.
Do dark elves on Layonara use crossbows? Or do they use bows, I ask because I've heard on Rave's quest about poisoned ~arrows~ and also I recall NPC Arcane Archers on several dark elven quests that involved Gelooo.

So .. bows or crossbows as the standard stuff of the darkiez? :P

From my perspective... it is mostly a choice of appropriate weapon for the mission. In close quarters and small caverns, crossbow. Surface operations or huge underdark caverns, shortbows. There are indeed dark elven arcane archers, and they are bad to the bone. ;)

Layonara's Deep races are not necessarily predisposed by race toward a type of weapon. There are some Deep races that are predisposed by religion however. This tends to be true of most races, Deep or Surface (or Underwater).

I also do not think the Layonara dark elves make use of typical Forgotten Realms gear like piwafwi cloaks which crumble when exposed to daylight.  Their gear is made properly, so that it will survive a daylight spell.  Nor do they have a matriarchal society where females are stronger & wiser than males which were quicker and smarter.  For the most part, the males and females of Layonara hate each other and are on mostly equal footing, following their own respective gods.  Females may be wizards just as males may be clerics of equal number, so there is less of that gender-based dimorphism that the Forgotten Realms had.   Though if you ask either gender of dark elf, they will attest that their own gender is stronger, faster, smarter and better smelling than the other. ;)

Is that what To'ryll and ni'haer get up to in their spare time?

To'ryll: "Ni'haer sweety, I'm the fairest of them all."

Ni'haer: "You're deluded hun, ~I~ am the fairest of them all!"

Nym'roos walks in..

Nym'roos: "Should I bring your vanity mirrors in my ladies- Err! I mean my Lord and Lady?"

We do not do that. The dynamics of their relationship transcend simple fits of vanity. She enjoys placing hexes in his room that make him vomit while he enjoys preying on her paranoia regarding poison in the food and drink inside the house. It's fun. ;)

While they would use crossbows if the situation warrants it, they strongly prefer bows, be it long or short. For close quarters, they wouldn't resort to crossbows much, they'd resort to magic, subterfuge and a covert strike.

Just like normal elves LORE: Elf: Weapons , their bows will be custom made for the user. A dark elf bow will also generally be very appealing to look at, but not at the cost of its purpose.
See LORE: Dark Elf in the "Personality" section.

Crossbows tend to be crude, unwieldy and cumbersome things, not fit for the children of the dark and their.... finesse :) Their opinion is that any idiot (like a dwarf) can use a crossbow, but it takes skill to use a bow.

Awesome, cheers, it seems I may need to re-think the last thing I submitted.

And Ni'haer.. Sell and Nym know the truth... remember that.. we ~KNOW~ 8) !

*preys on ingrained dark elven paranoia*

*cough* Historically, real men(1) use a sling. It was a much more effective weapon, and took even more skill than a bow to use effectively. I guess the halflings have dibs on us all. ;)

And I know Ed you was stating the viewpoint about crudity, unwieldiness, finesse and clumsiness of the crossbow from a dark elf perspective... :)

Historically, crossbows could punch their way through plate mail armour where arrows from a bow would simply bounce off. Crossbows take longer to load and fire than a bow, so perhaps that is one reason why the bow became predominant and not because the crossbow was so simple to use that everyone thought they would better themselves by training with a bow instead.

As for the sling, this *nods to Script* this is a difficult one. Slings are cheap and easy to produce and missiles for it easy to find and make, hence it's predominance in ancient societies. Bows and crossbows require a higher degree of technology, so came later in development and their technology moved on with the centuries culminating in the English Longbow and the Japanese bow, the latter of which could be used equally on foot or on horse....not so with any European bows. So as bow technology improved, there was little change in slings so they would have been left behind in the "arms race"....but I digress, apologies.

Any excuse to remove the loincloth and use it as a weapon! Today's equivalent is the wet tea towel flick isnt it?
